WordPress’s built-in privacy erasure tool does not let users delete their own accounts. To offer self-service account deletion, add a separate front-end control with a plugin or custom code, and decide in advance what happens to each user’s content and related data.
Account deletion is different from personal-data erasure
The WordPress privacy workflow is an administrator-managed response to a personal-data erasure request, not a self-service account-closure feature. An administrator opens Tools > Erase Personal Data, enters the requester’s email address, and the requester must validate the request by email before an administrator can approve it. After confirmation, data covered by the eraser is permanently removed from the database and the operation cannot be undone. WordPress’s developer documentation explicitly says that the personal-data eraser “does NOT delete registered user accounts” (WordPress Plugin Handbook).
That erasure workflow and an account-delete button solve related but distinct problems. A user-facing control deletes or removes the account according to your site’s policy; it does not, by itself, establish that all personal data has been erased or that every applicable retention obligation has been met.
What happens when an administrator deletes a user
WordPress provides administrator deletion through the Users screen. Before deleting an account, the administrator chooses whether to delete the user’s authored content or attribute it to another user. The Learn WordPress user-management guide notes that the currently logged-in administrator cannot delete their own account through that screen (Learn WordPress: User Management).

For programmatic deletion, wp_delete_user() can reassign posts and links to another user. If no reassignment user is supplied, the function deletes the posts instead. On a multisite installation, it removes the user from the current site, not from the entire network (WordPress Code Reference: wp_delete_user()).
Choose a self-service implementation
There are two practical routes: use a plugin that exposes account deletion to logged-in users, or have a developer build a workflow for your site. Both require you to define the deletion policy and the data-cleanup steps rather than assuming that one button handles every system.

Use a plugin
The WordPress.org listing for ByeUser – Self Service Account Deletion describes front-end account deletion through a shortcode or profile page, with options including confirmation, role restrictions, and WooCommerce account support. The listing also describes JavaScript confirmation or password re-entry. These are the plugin author’s listed features, not independently verified compatibility or test results; review the current listing and test the plugin on a staging site before enabling it for users.
Check that the plugin’s behavior fits your site before launch: which roles may delete themselves, whether users must re-enter a password or otherwise confirm, what happens to authored content, and which plugin-specific data it removes. If the account affects orders, subscriptions, or other business records, verify the actual consequences and records-retention requirements for your configuration rather than relying on a general feature description.

Build a custom workflow
A custom implementation can call WordPress’s deletion functions and provide the site-specific confirmation, content disposition, and cleanup logic that a complex setup needs. WordPress’s wp_delete_user() function supports content reassignment; the code that invokes it should explicitly choose whether to reassign content or allow it to be deleted. A custom front end should also ensure that a user can request deletion only for their own account, require an appropriate confirmation step, and handle cleanup for relevant plugin data and external services.
For administrator-run operations, WP-CLI’s wp user delete accepts --reassign=<user-id>. On Multisite it removes the user from the current site; the --network option is for network-level removal. Review content reassignment and the broader effects before using the network option (WP-CLI: wp user delete).

Account for multisite scope
In WordPress Multisite, removing someone from one site is not the same as deleting their network user. The deletion function and WP-CLI command operate on the current site by default; WP-CLI documents --network for network-level removal. Decide whether the user is leaving one site or the entire network, and check the impact on their content and access elsewhere before carrying out network-level deletion.
Prepare the policy and cleanup before launch

- Authored content: Decide whether posts and links are deleted or reassigned, and identify the destination account if content should remain.
- Confirmation and identity: Explain what deletion means before the final action. Require a confirmation appropriate to your account-security model; a password re-entry or a separately verified request can reduce accidental or unauthorized deletion.
- Roles and scope: Specify which roles can use self-service deletion and whether the action removes membership from one site or the whole network.
- Plugin-held data: Check whether plugins store user data outside standard WordPress user records. WordPress permits plugins to register their own personal-data eraser callbacks, but that does not mean every plugin’s data is automatically covered.
- External services: Identify connected services that may hold account information and determine how their records are handled; WordPress deletion does not necessarily remove data held by third parties.
- Backups and archives: Set expectations for backup and archive retention. The built-in privacy erasure workflow does not automatically clear backups or archives.
- Records to retain: Determine whether any records must be retained under your site’s applicable obligations, and define how they are handled when an account is closed.
- Confirmation and support: Tell users what the action will delete, whether it can be reversed, and how to contact the site if they need help or believe deletion was accidental.
