Jetpack’s Newsletter Categories feature is the clearest documented option for a signup form with a category selector. Subscribe2 is an alternative, but its category controls differ for public email subscribers and registered WordPress users.
Let visitors choose categories with Jetpack
Jetpack’s Newsletter Categories feature works with its Subscribe block. The feature is not enabled by default, so configure it before adding the signup form. See Jetpack’s Newsletter Categories guide and Subscribe block documentation for the current workflow.
- In WP Admin, go to Jetpack → Newsletter → Settings.
- Enable Newsletter Categories, choose the categories to include or exclude, and save your settings.
- Add a Subscribe block to the page or post where readers should sign up.
- In the block settings, choose which newsletter categories to offer to new subscribers.
- Explain on the page that readers can choose categories at signup and later manage their preferences from the WordPress.com subscription management page.
Check category defaults before launch
Jetpack’s category behavior has an important consequence for an existing audience: posts in categories you have not explicitly excluded may still be emailed to all subscribers, and newly created categories automatically subscribe existing subscribers. Review the include and exclude settings carefully, then make a test subscription and check what it receives before promoting the form.
Use Subscribe2 when its subscriber model fits
Subscribe2 is a WordPress plugin for post email notifications. Its documented installation route is Plugins → Add New: search for Subscribe2, install and activate it, then configure its settings. Its listing describes per-post notices and periodic digests, along with the ability to exclude categories. Check the current WordPress.org installation information for the listing and installation details.

Do not assume every Subscribe2 subscriber sees the same category selector. Subscribe2’s FAQ distinguishes public subscribers, who submit an email address and receive a confirmation email, from registered blog users. The FAQ assigns category choice and richer email-format controls to registered users. Confirm that this distinction suits your audience before choosing the plugin.

Choose Jetpack if the essential requirement is a visitor-facing category choice during signup. Consider Subscribe2 if its public-versus-registered subscriber model and notification or digest options match how your site operates.

Test the setup on your site
The cited product documentation establishes these features, not compatibility with every WordPress version, theme, host, or installed plugin combination. Check the current plugin or service details for your site and test the complete signup and email flow before launch. Verify that subscribers receive only the categories you intend, that excluded categories stay excluded, and that the preference-management route is clear to readers.
