What cross-browser testing with Playwright covers
Playwright Test runs a test suite against each configured project. A project is a named configuration group that can specify a browser, device settings, or other test options; it does not require a separate copy of your tests. By default, Playwright runs all configured projects. Use --project to run only selected ones.
The core browser-engine options are Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Playwright also supports installed Chrome and Edge channels. These choices are not interchangeable: Playwright’s WebKit build is not the branded Safari application, and its Firefox build is not the branded Firefox application. If you need to make a close-to-Safari claim, pay attention to the operating system as well as the engine. Playwright recommends macOS WebKit when platform-sensitive behavior such as media playback matters; Linux WebKit is not identical to Safari on macOS. [Playwright browser support]
Device profiles emulate selected settings, such as user agent, viewport, screen dimensions, and touch support. They do not turn a desktop browser into a physical phone. You can also configure locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions, and color scheme. [Playwright emulation]

Install Playwright and its browsers
Use the Playwright package and language that fit your application, and keep the package version pinned through your project’s usual lockfile process. The following commands assume a JavaScript or TypeScript project using Playwright Test.
- Install Playwright Test:
npm install --save-dev @playwright/test. - Install the supported browser binaries:
npx playwright install. - On Linux CI runners that need system libraries: run
npx playwright install --with-deps.
Playwright browser revisions are tied to Playwright releases. After upgrading the Playwright package, rerun the browser installation command so the expected binaries are available. Consult the current browser installation guide for release-specific requirements and supported channels.
Configure a Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit matrix
Create or update playwright.config.ts with one project per engine. This starting configuration uses Playwright’s desktop device profiles:
import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
projects: [
{ name: 'chromium', use: { ...devices['Desktop Chrome'] } },
{ name: 'firefox', use: { ...devices['Desktop Firefox'] } },
{ name: 'webkit', use: { ...devices['Desktop Safari'] } },
],
});
Each project runs the same tests unless you deliberately configure project-specific test matching or options. Project names appear in test output and reports, which makes it easier to see which browser configuration failed. See Playwright’s project configuration guide for configuration options.

Add branded browser channels when you need them
If your support promise specifically covers Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, add projects using those installed browser channels rather than assuming the Chromium project proves identical behavior. The available channel names and installation requirements can change; use the current Playwright browser documentation for the supported values.
Add mobile profiles for a defined reason
To test responsive layouts or behavior that depends on emulated mobile settings, add a selected device profile from Playwright’s devices catalog to a project. Choose the profile based on the devices and characteristics you support, rather than adding every available profile. Device emulation does not validate hardware-specific behavior on a real phone.
Configure environment-sensitive behavior deliberately
Projects can set locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions, and color scheme in addition to browser and device settings. Add these when the application depends on them—for example, when verifying localized content or permission flows—and name projects clearly enough that a failure identifies the conditions being tested. Playwright documents these controls in its emulation guide.

npx playwright test
Run only Firefox while investigating a browser-specific failure:
npx playwright test --project=firefox
To run a chosen subset, repeat the option:
npx playwright test --project=chromium --project=webkit
During development, use Playwright’s UI mode or headed mode to inspect the test sequence and diagnose failures. The test CLI reference lists command options, and running and debugging tests explains the available workflows.
Choose a useful matrix instead of the largest matrix
Build coverage around your product’s support commitments and the risks that could change across engines or platforms. A practical decision process is:
- Start with the engine coverage you support. Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit give coverage across Playwright’s core engine choices. Add Chrome or Edge channels if you explicitly support those branded browsers.
- Include operating systems where behavior is platform-bound. Browser engine coverage alone does not establish behavior across operating systems. Media codecs and other capabilities can vary by operating system, so run the relevant platform when those capabilities matter.
- Use emulated devices for settings, not hardware claims. Device profiles help exercise selected viewport, user-agent, and touch configurations. They do not establish how an actual device’s hardware or branded browser behaves.
- Separate broad coverage from fast feedback when useful. Run a targeted smoke or regression subset during development if the full matrix is too slow for that feedback loop; retain the broader matrix at the stage appropriate to your release process.
- Balance CI stability and throughput. Begin with a conservative worker count on constrained runners. When you need more parallelism, distribute work across CI jobs with sharding rather than assuming that simply increasing workers on one runner improves reproducibility.
Playwright’s guidance treats the current Chromium project as a sound default in many cases, while recommending branded Chrome or Edge projects when those channels themselves are important to test. The right matrix depends on what you promise users and what risks matter in your application. [Playwright best practices]

Run the matrix in continuous integration
A CI job needs the project’s dependencies and matching Playwright browsers before it runs tests. On Linux, install system dependencies where the runner requires them. A basic sequence is:
- Check out the application code.
- Install dependencies from the project’s lockfile using the package manager and command your project uses.
- Install Playwright browsers and, where needed, Linux dependencies with
npx playwright install --with-deps. - Run
npx playwright testto execute all configured projects.
For constrained CI agents, Playwright’s CI guidance recommends starting with one worker for stability. If the suite needs greater throughput, shard it across jobs. The exact CI YAML depends on your provider; follow the official Continuous Integration guide for provider-specific examples and current recommendations.

A failure in one project is evidence to investigate, not proof that the application is broken in that browser. Use the project name in the report to compare the conditions, then determine whether the cause is a real engine or platform difference, a test assumption, or a missing dependency or browser installation.
- Browser executable or launch errors: install the browser binaries for the Playwright version in the lockfile. After a package upgrade, rerun
npx playwright install; on Linux, check whether system dependencies are needed. - One project fails while others pass: rerun that project with
--project=<name>, inspect the browser-specific trace or output, and check whether the test assumes identical rendering or timing across engines. - WebKit behavior differs from Safari: verify whether the difference may be platform-specific. A WebKit run on Linux is not a substitute for macOS when a close-to-Safari result is required.
- Tests fail intermittently in CI: check runner capacity and parallelism. Begin with one worker on a constrained agent, then scale through sharding across jobs if needed.
- Mobile project results are treated as device proof: clarify that the profile emulates settings such as viewport and touch support; validate actual hardware behavior separately when it is part of the requirement.
