You can create ordinary WooCommerce coupons without an extra plugin: enable coupons, then add and configure a code under Marketing > Coupons. Use the paid Smart Coupons extension only if you need features such as gift certificates, store credit, bulk coupon generation, or purchase-triggered coupons. For discount links that apply a code automatically, WooCommerce offers a separate URL Coupons extension.
How to create a coupon in WooCommerce
WooCommerce includes built-in coupon creation and management tools. Core coupons support percentage discounts, fixed discounts to the cart, and fixed discounts to specific products. Follow these steps to create one:

In WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce > Settings > General, enable the option to use coupon codes, and save your changes.

Go to Marketing > Coupons and select Add new coupon.

Enter the coupon code customers will use. Add an internal description if it will help you identify its purpose later.

Choose a discount type and enter the amount as a number, without a currency symbol or percent sign. Set an expiry date if the offer should end; WooCommerce treats the entered date as the coupon’s expiration date.

Open Usage restrictions to set eligibility rules, then open Usage limits to cap redemptions if needed.

Publish the coupon when its rules are ready. If it should become available later, schedule its publication. Before sharing it, check that it works for the intended cart and customer conditions.

How to restrict a WooCommerce coupon to certain customers
Set restrictions in the coupon editor’s Usage restrictions section. Available core options let you control the order value, products, categories, sale items, and billing emails. An empty product inclusion or exclusion field leaves the coupon applicable across the store rather than limiting it to selected products.
- Spend: Set minimum or maximum spend requirements.
- Products and categories: Specify products or categories that must be included, or exclude selected products and categories.
- Sale items: Exclude sale items from the offer if the discount should not apply to them.
- Customer email: Enter allowed billing email addresses to limit who can redeem the code.
- Combining discounts: Enable individual use if the coupon should not be combined with other coupons.
In Usage limits, you can set a store-wide redemption limit for the coupon or a per-user limit. An item-use limit applies to specified products, so configure the product rules when using that limit.

When to use the Smart Coupons extension
A standard percentage, fixed-cart, or fixed-product discount does not require Smart Coupons. The paid extension is for additional workflows, including gift certificates, store credit, vouchers, bulk code generation and CSV import, coupons issued after a product purchase, one-click coupon application, gift cards, BOGO offers, free gifts, tiered promotions, expiry reminders, and advanced restrictions. Choose it when one of those capabilities is needed, rather than for a basic discount code.
To install it, download the plugin ZIP from your WooCommerce account, then in WordPress admin go to Plugins > Add New, upload the ZIP, and activate it. After activation, its tools appear under Marketing > Coupons. On WooCommerce versions earlier than 4.4.0, the tabs are under the WooCommerce menu instead.

How to automatically apply a WooCommerce coupon
WooCommerce URL Coupons is a separate extension for creating links that apply a coupon when a shopper visits; a link can also add products to the cart. The coupon’s configured restrictions still determine whether the discount is eligible, so an automatic link does not bypass the rules.

Caching can interfere with coupon URLs. The URL Coupons documentation recommends arranging with your host or caching plugin not to cache the coupon URL pattern; a dedicated URL prefix may help. Smart Coupons documentation also describes a URL form that inserts a code when a shopper visits a store URL. Confirm the workflow in your installed setup, particularly if caching or other plugins are involved.

Smart Coupons’ FAQ says a coupon generated automatically after a linked product purchase may have the purchaser’s or recipient’s email added to Allowed emails by default. If the code is meant to be shareable, disable email restriction on the parent coupon. That setting applies when automatic coupon generation is enabled on the parent; changing it on an already-generated child coupon has no effect.
Restrict a coupon by payment method
Smart Coupons documents payment-method restrictions as an extension feature. Edit or create a coupon, open Usage restriction, find Payment methods under Smart Coupons Restrictions, choose the allowed gateways, and publish or update the coupon. For example, this can limit redemption to PayPal or Stripe.
