In a block theme, place the Post Excerpt block in the relevant template—usually inside a Query Loop’s Post Template for an archive or other post list. WordPress displays a manually written excerpt when one exists; otherwise, it generates one from the post content.
Choose the right method for your theme

The Loop is the standard mechanism classic themes use to display posts. In a block theme, the Query Loop determines which posts appear and how the list is arranged; the Post Excerpt block renders each post’s teaser. Display excerpts in a classic PHP theme
Open the theme template responsible for the post list—for example, an archive or index template—and place the_excerpt() in the Loop where each teaser should appear. A minimal example is:

<?php endif; ?>the_excerpt() outputs the current post’s excerpt and applies filters and paragraph formatting. It is a Loop template tag, so place it in the Loop where WordPress has set the current post. The official function reference documents its output behavior.

Use a returned string instead of immediate output
Use get_the_excerpt() when PHP needs the excerpt as a string—for example, to inspect or process it before deciding how to output it. It accepts an optional post ID or WP_Post argument. Outside ordinary Loop context, be deliberate about how the current post is selected, particularly when WordPress must generate an excerpt automatically. See the get_the_excerpt() reference.
Add excerpts in a block theme
- Open the relevant template in the Site Editor.
- For a post list, add or select a Query Loop and its Post Template.
- Inside the Post Template, add the Post Excerpt block where each teaser should appear, alongside elements such as the post title, image, or date.
- Adjust the block’s excerpt length or “Read more” text in its settings if needed.
The core block is named core/post-excerpt and is rendered dynamically on the server. Its documented attributes include excerptLength, moreText, and showMoreOnNewLine; the default excerptLength is 55. Details are in the Post Excerpt block reference.

Understand what WordPress displays
- Manual excerpt: If an explicit excerpt is supplied for a post, WordPress uses it.
- Generated excerpt: If no manual excerpt exists, WordPress generates one from the post content. The official
the_excerpt()reference documents a default generated length of 55 words. This is a default, not a universal editorial recommendation. - Cleanup and trimming: Generated excerpts have shortcodes and tags removed and are trimmed at a word boundary, or a character boundary for languages where that applies.
- Trailing marker: A generated excerpt receives
[…]by default. A manually supplied excerpt does not automatically receive that marker.
The function reference documents these behaviors and the excerpt_length filter for changing the length of generated excerpts. Because manual excerpts are supplied text, do not assume that changing this filter will shorten them.
Choose between an excerpt and the More quicktag
Use an excerpt when the theme should control where teasers appear and provide a consistent presentation across archive or index views. A theme can display an excerpt with the_excerpt() rather than printing the full post content.

The <!--more--> quicktag marks a split in an individual post. It depends on the author placing that split and on the template rendering the_content(). Choose it when the author should select the break point for that post; choose excerpts when the theme should manage the teaser display. WordPress explains the distinction in its excerpt function reference.
