To stop WordPress core from generating PDF preview images for future uploads, add a filter that returns no fallback image sizes: add_filter( 'fallback_intermediate_image_sizes', '__return_empty_array' ); This is a broad setting for non-image attachments, not a PDF-only switch, so check for custom media-processing code before enabling it.
What the setting changes
Since WordPress 4.7, core can create a JPEG preview of the first page of an uploaded PDF. The preview can appear in places such as the Media screen, Gallery, Attachment Details, and PDF attachment pages, as described in the WordPress 4.7 feature announcement.
During attachment metadata generation, WordPress handles PDFs separately from images. It obtains fallback image sizes and compares them with registered image sub-sizes; when sizes are available, it attempts to use an image editor to create a JPEG preview and configured sub-sizes. The current function reference documents this PDF processing path.
The filter below prevents those fallback sizes from being used. It does not disable PDF uploads or change how a browser displays a PDF. It is documented for non-image MIME types, so returning an empty array can also affect other non-image attachment processing that uses the same filter.

Disable preview generation
- Choose where to keep the snippet. Add it to a site-specific plugin or a code-snippet manager rather than a theme file, so changing or updating the theme does not remove the setting.
- Add the filter:
add_filter( 'fallback_intermediate_image_sizes', '__return_empty_array' ); - Test a new PDF upload. Try the change on staging, or take a backup first if the site has custom media-processing code. Check the new attachment and confirm that the unwanted preview is no longer generated.
Scope, compatibility, and existing previews
The filter is not PDF-only
The documented hook changes fallback image sizes for non-image MIME types. The snippet therefore applies more broadly than PDFs. If your site has custom code that processes other non-image attachments, review that code before applying the global filter. The official sources identify this hook as the control for the PDF preview behavior but do not provide a PDF-only conditional example.
Image-editor support affects generation
The 4.7 announcement describes PDF preview support using WP_Image_Editor_Imagick, Imagick, ImageMagick, and Ghostscript. If the required support is unavailable or generation fails, core falls back without adding preview image metadata. Disabling fallback sizes prevents core from reaching the preview-generation step when there are no sizes to process; it does not install or configure those server components.

The change does not remove older files
The filter acts during metadata generation. The official function reference documents core saving a generated JPEG with a -pdf.jpg filename, but the reviewed documentation does not describe this filter automatically deleting previews or metadata that already exist. If you also want to remove older derivatives, treat that as a separate maintenance task: back up the site and handle file and attachment-metadata cleanup deliberately.
