A feed can fail because the URL is wrong or redirects unexpectedly, the server returns an error or an HTML page instead of feed data, or the XML, encoding, RSS version, or extension syntax is invalid. Validate the feed URL, then use the reported error to choose what to fix; changing reader settings alone will not fix a broken feed response.
Start with the exact feed URL and its response
Check the address your reader is subscribed to, not just the website homepage. Request that exact address and determine whether it returns feed XML, an HTTP error, an unexpected web page, or a redirect. These are different problems: an XML validator can help diagnose feed syntax, but it cannot make a server deliver the intended feed.
- If the response is an error or an unrelated page, investigate the feed address, server, proxy, access controls, or redirect before changing XML.
- If it redirects, check that the destination is the current feed and that the reader can reach it.
- If the site moved or changed publishing platforms, make sure old subscription addresses forward to the new feed.
Validate the feed and follow the reported error
Submit the exact feed URL to the W3C Feed Validation Service, or provide the response content directly. The service checks RSS and Atom syntax, identifies error types, and points to where a problem first appears. It supports RSS 0.90, 0.91, 0.92, 0.93, 0.94, 1.0, 2.0, and Atom.
A successful validation means the submitted content passes the validator’s checks; it does not prove that every reader can fetch it or that the publisher’s feed settings are correct. If the validator reports an HTTP or protocol error, resolve delivery first. If it reports a document error, use the location and type to inspect the XML, encoding, version, or extensions.

Fix malformed XML and incorrect RSS structure
RSS is XML. The RSS Advisory Board’s RSS 2.0 specification says RSS files must conform to XML 1.0. For RSS 2.0, the document has an <rss> root with a version attribute and a <channel> child. Unclosed or mismatched tags, content outside the root, invalid characters, and unescaped special characters can make a feed invalid.
- Close every opened element and make sure nested elements are properly ordered.
- In ordinary text, escape literal ampersands as
&and less-than signs as<rather than placing them directly in the XML. - Check that the document’s structure matches the format it declares. RSS 2.0 requires
version="2.0". RSS 0.90 and RSS 1.0 have different structures and do not use RSS 2.0’s version attribute; do not fix a version error by relabeling a feed without confirming what its generator is meant to produce. - If the feed contains custom elements or attributes, confirm they are defined in a namespace. RSS 2.0 allows nonstandard elements and attributes when defined in a namespace.
The RSS Advisory Board identifies its specification as version 2.0.11, published March 30, 2009, and describes RSS 2.0 as effectively frozen at version 2.0.1. A publisher should still verify the actual format produced by its software rather than assuming every XML feed is RSS 2.0.

Make the encoding and HTTP headers agree
Compare the XML declaration’s encoding with the charset in the HTTP Content-Type response header. If they conflict, aggregators may handle the feed inconsistently. W3C’s guidance is to make the HTTP charset match the document declaration or ensure the server makes no conflicting claim about the encoding.
W3C recommends application/rss+xml for RSS, identifies application/rdf+xml for RSS 1.0, and suggests application/xml as a general XML media type alternative. Check the response headers from the actual feed endpoint, including any proxy or CDN that might override the origin server’s headers.

Check the feed type and redirects in WordPress
WordPress provides feeds for RDF/RSS 1.0, RSS 0.92, RSS 2.0, Atom, and comments RSS 2.0. Make sure the address in the reader is the intended feed. The comments RSS address contains comments, not the site’s post content. A theme may also omit links for some built-in feed types without meaning those feeds are unavailable.
If the feed stopped working after a migration or URL change, inspect rewrite and redirect configuration so old subscription addresses reach the new feed. WordPress documents rewrite rules as one way to forward RSS readers to feeds at a new location.

When only one RSS reader fails
If the feed URL returns expected content and validation succeeds, but a particular reader cannot subscribe or update, compare that reader’s exact error with the response for the same feed request. Check the URL stored in the reader, redirect destination, HTTP status, and whether access controls or server behavior prevent that client from retrieving the endpoint. A reader-specific compatibility problem is also possible, but there is no universal cause or workaround without the reader name and its error.
