For authorized browser testing, start by choosing the browser and headless mode that match the test target; treat third-party stealth packages as optional, limited configuration—not a guarantee of avoiding detection. If a site blocks an authorized test, request approved access or use its API rather than trying to defeat a challenge.
Define the test and its permission boundary
Use browser automation on a site you own, a staging environment, or a site for which you have explicit authorization. A test that needs reliable access should be arranged with the site operator: ask for a test account, allowlisted test environment, or approved API. A stealth package does not grant permission to access a service or bypass its controls.
For ordinary end-to-end testing, configure Playwright’s documented browser and execution mode to reflect the product’s supported environment. Add a third-party package only if the test has a clear reason for it, and do not describe the result as undetectable.
Choose the browser that represents your target
Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. It can also run branded Chrome and Edge channels; its browser guide says current Playwright releases support stable and beta channels for those browsers. Choose based on the browser your application supports, the public release you need to cover, or the engine required for compatibility testing—not on an assumption that a particular browser evades detection. | Choice | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Chromium | Useful for Chromium-engine coverage. Playwright generally uses open-source Chromium by default. |
| Firefox | Use when Firefox compatibility is part of the product’s supported-browser coverage. |
| WebKit | Use when WebKit compatibility is part of the target coverage. |
| Branded Chrome or Edge | Use a supported stable or beta channel when the test specifically needs that branded browser release. |
Pick a headless or headed mode deliberately
Playwright Test runs browsers headless by default. Add --headed when you need to watch a test or debug what the browser is doing:
npx playwright test --headed
Chromium’s default headless shell and its newer headless mode are different configurations. Playwright documents selecting the newer mode with the chromium channel. It quotes Google Chrome’s description of that mode: “New Headless on the other hand is the real Chrome browser, and thus more authentic, reliable, and offers more features.” That comparison is specifically about high-accuracy end-to-end and extension testing; it is not a promise that the mode will appear human or pass bot checks. Playwright Browsers and Playwright Test CLI
import { test, chromium } from '@playwright/test';
test('run against the selected Chromium channel', async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ channel: 'chromium' });
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// Add assertions for your authorized test target.
await browser.close();
});
Use the test runner’s normal configuration when possible; launch a browser directly only when your test needs explicit control over the browser instance. Match the mode to the test: headed execution helps visual debugging, while headless execution is the runner default. The newer Chromium headless mode is an option when the documented browser behavior is a closer fit for a high-accuracy or extension test.

When a third-party stealth package is appropriate
The Python package playwright-stealth documents configuration for Playwright pages and contexts. Its PyPI page lists version 2.0.0 and recommends wrapping an asynchronous Playwright session with Stealth().use_async(async_playwright()). The package warns: “Don’t expect this to bypass anything but the simplest of bot detection methods.” It is not a Playwright feature, and that package’s documentation does not establish results for other libraries or implementations. Check its current instructions before installing: its version history notes breaking changes. playwright-stealth on PyPI

Install the documented package with:
pip install playwright-stealth
Example using the documented async wrapper pattern:
import asyncio
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright
from playwright_stealth import Stealth
async def main():
async with Stealth().use_async(async_playwright()) as p:
browser = await p.chromium.launch()
page = await browser.new_page()
await page.goto("https://example.com")
# Add assertions for your authorized test target.
await browser.close()
asyncio.run(main())
The package also documents applying its configuration to an entire context. Refer to its current PyPI documentation for the exact API for your installed release rather than combining examples from different major versions.

What detection research does—and does not—show
A 2026 University of Bamberg preprint reports observations from 10,000 websites across four browser configurations, or 40,000 page visits. In that setup, Chromium headless had a 15% soft-block rate, compared with 7% for the other tested configurations. The authors attributed 82% of observed blocks to bot detection—59% vendor-confirmed and 23% inferred—and identified Cloudflare and Akamai among providers with high blocking rates in their setup. These are scoped study results, not universal rates, and the study did not test the playwright-stealth package. University of Bamberg preprint (2026)
A separate 2026 preprint examined AI-agent detection in a controlled benchmark. It reports behavioral signals including missing raw pointer-move and wheel-delta streams, and says that signal remained after trajectory manipulation in its study. The authors also report that two behavioral features achieved 100% observed agent recall at each evasion level in their benchmark, with agent precision of 0.994. Those figures describe that benchmark; they do not establish how every site or automation stack behaves in the real world. Choudhary et al. preprint (2026)

- Record the Playwright version, browser engine and channel, and whether the run was headed or headless.
- After updating Playwright, reinstall its browser binaries so the installed browser matches the framework version.
- Keep any third-party stealth package version in the test record and check its release notes before upgrading.
Troubleshooting authorized tests
The target returns a challenge or blocks the run
First confirm the test is authorized and the environment is intended to accept automation. Ask the site owner for test access, a staging target, an allowlist, or an approved API. Switching headless modes or adding a package is not a reliable way to resolve a site policy or access-control block.
The browser behaves differently after an update
Check the recorded Playwright and browser versions. Reinstall Playwright’s browser binaries after updating the framework, then rerun the test in the intended browser channel.
The stealth example fails to import or run
Confirm the installed package version and follow the current PyPI instructions for that major release. The package records breaking changes in its history, so older snippets may not match the installed API.

The result differs between headed and headless runs
Verify that both runs use the intended browser engine and channel, and record the mode with the result. These are distinct execution configurations; a difference does not by itself prove that a site is detecting automation.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page rather than run an interactive browser test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
