For a new browser-testing project, Selenium is the easier choice to justify and maintain: Protractor reached end of life in August 2023, and its project discourages new adoption. Historically, Protractor could feel simpler for Angular end-to-end tests because it waited for Angular’s application stability automatically. That convenience does not outweigh its discontinued status for a new project.
What each tool does
Protractor was an end-to-end testing framework for Angular and AngularJS, built on WebDriverJS. Selenium WebDriver is a language-neutral interface for controlling browsers. It is not an Angular testing framework, so its setup and waiting behavior depend on the language bindings and test code you choose.
In short, the tools overlap in browser automation, but Protractor added Angular-specific behavior on top of WebDriverJS.
Which is easier to use?
For a new project: Selenium
Protractor is no longer a sound starting point: the project says it reached end of life in August 2023 and discourages new users from adopting it. Selenium’s official documentation remains current. For historical Angular-specific convenience: Protractor
When it was supported, Protractor could require less explicit synchronization in Angular tests because it automatically waited for the application to become stable. The Angular team described that as the feature distinguishing Protractor from selenium-webdriver. Selenium does not provide this Angular-specific convenience by itself; tests may need explicit waits or other synchronization suited to the application. What Selenium requires
Selenium’s getting-started documentation identifies three essentials: the bindings library for the language you select, a browser, and that browser’s driver. Exact installation steps depend on that language and browser, so there is no single command sequence that applies to every Selenium setup. What Protractor setup looked like
The Protractor tutorial is legacy documentation, not a current recommendation. Its example setup used Node.js and npm, a test framework such as Jasmine, a spec file and a configuration file, and a local standalone Selenium Server. That particular server setup called for a JDK. These steps help explain why Protractor could feel guided for an Angular-and-JavaScript project, but they should not be used to start a new Protractor suite. Legacy Protractor tutorial.
Angular waiting and modern JavaScript
Protractor managed asynchronous work using a mechanism called Control Flow. As JavaScript async/await became the modern approach, that model became a poor fit. The Angular team said Selenium WebDriver 4 removed Control Flow support; updating Protractor would therefore have required a major breaking change and changes to existing tests. This was part of the project team’s rationale for ending Protractor development, not a claim that every migration has the same scope. Angular project discussion.

Moving an existing Protractor suite
The Angular team identified selenium-webdriver as the closest API migration path, but cautioned that methods are not one-to-one replacements. Expect to review test calls and remove assumptions that Protractor’s Control Flow will manage promises for you. The amount of work depends on the suite’s use of Protractor-specific behavior and its existing synchronization; the project guidance does not establish one migration cost for all teams. - Starting a new browser test project: choose Selenium and use bindings for your language and browser needs.
- Maintaining Protractor tests: plan a migration rather than extending a discontinued framework indefinitely; selenium-webdriver is the closest cited API path, but expect adjustments.
