Short answer: the current SRS project documentation does not list Windows as a supported platform, and it does not provide a complete, officially documented Windows-to-YouTube loop-streaming recipe. You can use SRS in a supported Linux or macOS environment, or a suitable container, as a relay—but for one prerecorded loop, OBS or FFmpeg can usually publish directly to YouTube without SRS. This guide separates those options and shows the practical setup and checks for each.

What SRS, OBS or FFmpeg, and YouTube each do

  • The loop source is the prerecorded video or playlist you want to play.
  • OBS or FFmpeg can encode and publish that media as a live stream.
  • SRS is a real-time media server. It can receive a published stream and handle or relay media protocols; it is not itself a YouTube loop player.
  • YouTube Live is the destination. Its Live Control Room provides the server URL and stream key your publishing encoder needs.

The SRS project README lists Linux and macOS as supported platforms, not Windows. Its examples show an OBS custom service publishing to rtmp://localhost/live with the stream key livestream, and FFmpeg publishing a file to an SRS RTMP URL. The separate SRS v7 LTS getting-started guide documents a Linux-oriented build flow. These examples explain the roles and protocols, but they do not establish a supported, tested native-Windows deployment. See the SRS project README and SRS v7 LTS getting-started guide.

Choose direct publishing or an SRS relay

Approach What it does When it fits Main trade-off
OBS or FFmpeg directly to YouTube Encodes the loop and sends it to YouTube using the Live Control Room server URL and stream key. A single YouTube loop stream when you do not need a separate media server. The publishing PC or host must stay running and connected; performance depends on the encoder, media, and system.
OBS or FFmpeg to SRS, then onward to YouTube Publishes media to SRS, which is used as an intermediate server or relay. When your architecture specifically needs SRS or its protocol-handling role. Adds deployment, configuration, monitoring, and restart work. The consulted SRS sources do not document a complete Windows-hosted path or establish that SRS is necessary for one loop stream.

If you choose SRS, treat a Linux or macOS host—or a suitably configured container—as a proposed architecture, not a verified Windows recipe. You still need to configure a working path from the publisher through SRS to YouTube and test the end-to-end stream; the cited SRS examples do not document that complete relay configuration.

Check YouTube access before configuring the encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to use Live Control Room. Create or select a stream there and locate its server URL and stream key.
  2. Check that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable access well before a planned start.
  3. Keep the stream key secret. Enter it only into the encoder or service you intend to use. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. In the encoder, use the YouTube server URL and stream key. Start sending the stream, check for a preview in Live Control Room, and then start the live event there if required by the selected stream setup. YouTube’s workflow is described in its encoder setup instructions.

Direct YouTube loop setup with OBS on Windows

OBS is the straightforward Windows publishing option when the source is a prerecorded file and you do not need SRS as an intermediate server. OBS lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic requirements; meeting those minimums does not guarantee the PC can stream smoothly. CPU load varies with encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard and test the actual loop on the intended machine. OBS’s supported-system information is at OBS system requirements.

  1. Install and configure OBS. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard and choose settings appropriate to streaming. Add the prerecorded file as a Media Source in a scene, and enable looping in that source’s properties if you want the same file to repeat. For multiple clips, build the intended playlist and verify its order and transitions before going live.
  2. Set the YouTube destination. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service (or a custom service if needed), then enter the server and stream key from Live Control Room. Do not publish the key in screenshots, scripts, or public configuration files.
  3. Choose an encoder and output settings. YouTube currently accepts RTMP or RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends RTMPS, up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval not exceeding 4 seconds. Set OBS to match the source and available upload capacity rather than increasing resolution or frame rate without a reason.
  4. Set a suitable bitrate. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance gives 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30, and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30. These are guide values, not performance guarantees; use the matching guidance for other output formats and test the actual stream. Keep upload capacity above the stream bitrate: YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom.
  5. Test before the real broadcast. Start OBS, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and check stream health while the video plays. Test representative motion and audio, not just a still frame or silent opening. Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio problems, and unstable upload before relying on a long run.
  6. Start the live event and monitor it. Once the preview and health indicators look good, go live in YouTube as appropriate for the selected workflow. Keep a plan for monitoring and recovery; a looping media source does not by itself guarantee that the publishing connection or the YouTube event will continue indefinitely.

Refer to YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrate guidance, and stream setup guidance when choosing settings; recommendations can change.

Using FFmpeg instead of OBS

FFmpeg can publish a media file to a streaming endpoint, but the SRS examples are not a full ready-to-run Windows command for sending a looping file through SRS and onward to YouTube. Do not treat the SRS sample destination as YouTube’s server URL: they are different endpoints. For direct publishing, configure FFmpeg to loop the chosen input and encode or copy it in a format compatible with YouTube, then send it to the YouTube ingest URL with the stream key. The exact command depends on the file’s codecs, whether it needs re-encoding, and the installed FFmpeg build, so test the command and output before scheduling a long stream. If using SRS, separately establish and test the publisher-to-SRS and SRS-to-YouTube legs; the official examples cited here do not supply the complete Windows workflow.

Copyright, archives, and long-running streams

Check the rights to every playlist item

Having a video file does not by itself establish that you have permission to broadcast its music, footage, or other material. Review the rights and YouTube’s applicable policies for every item in a loop before streaming. Repeated or prerecorded content also needs to comply with YouTube’s current channel and monetization policies; a technically successful live stream does not guarantee monetization eligibility. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical review aid.

Do not treat YouTube’s archive limit as a 24/7 guarantee

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise indefinite 24/7 broadcasting, seamless restarts, or preservation of a stream longer than that boundary. If you need a continuous loop, plan and test stream segmentation, restart behavior, monitoring, and how you will handle each archive. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover the platform’s operational guidance.

Troubleshooting common setup failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
OBS cannot connect or YouTube shows no incoming stream Incorrect server URL or key, live access not enabled, or a network/encoder problem. Confirm the URL and key in Live Control Room, check channel eligibility and activation status, and restart the encoder after correcting settings. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
Video stutters or stream health reports dropped frames Upload instability or insufficient available bandwidth. Check sustained upload capacity, allow YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the stream bitrate, and lower bitrate or output demands if necessary. Test over the connection you will actually use.
OBS reports encoder overload or the PC struggles The selected resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene exceeds the PC’s capacity. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, reduce output demands, or try an available hardware encoder. Minimum system requirements alone do not establish adequate performance.
Image is black, frozen, or stops at the end of the clip The media source or playlist is not configured to loop, or the file/scene is not behaving as expected. Check the source’s loop setting, confirm the scene stays active, and run a full-length test of the playlist before the broadcast.
SRS is unavailable or the relay path fails The deployment, listener, publisher URL, or relay/output path is incomplete; Windows-native support is not established by the cited SRS documentation. Validate each connection separately—publisher to SRS, then SRS to YouTube—in a supported deployment environment. Do not assume the README’s local example is an end-to-end YouTube relay.
A long broadcast ends or its archive is missing or incomplete The stream exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic-archive boundary or encountered a restart/connection interruption. Design and test shorter segments, explicit restarts, monitoring, and archive handling instead of relying on one uninterrupted 24/7 event.
