Use web data for event-driven investing by testing a defined event hypothesis—not by treating a busy website, a spike in online discussion, or a striking backtest as a trade signal. Start with the event and its expected mechanism, choose data that can observe it, preserve what was knowable at the time, and test whether it adds useful information beyond existing signals.
What web data can—and cannot—tell you
Web data is information gathered from online sources that may help you observe an event or a change related to a company, sector, or market. It includes public issuer disclosures and machine-readable regulatory filings, as well as alternative data such as scraped web content, job postings, satellite imagery, and shipping records. These sources differ in coverage, format, update timing, and reliability.
Public disclosures and alternative datasets are not interchangeable. SEC materials describe structured disclosures on EDGAR and additional public datasets; institutional research also discusses alternative-data sources. A filing may establish what a company disclosed and when it filed. A web scrape or shipping record may offer a different, indirect observation. Neither kind of data establishes by itself that an event is investable or that a strategy using it will be profitable.
Think of a dataset as evidence for a hypothesis. For example, if you believe a particular operational change could precede a company’s public announcement, ask whether the data actually measures that change, when the observation became available, and whether it provides information not already captured by public disclosures or other signals.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to evaluate web data for an event-driven strategy
1. Define the event hypothesis and horizon
Write down the event or information change you care about, the mechanism by which it could matter, and the time horizon over which an effect might plausibly appear. Be specific about what would count as evidence for or against the hypothesis. A variable that moves around the same time as an event may simply correlate with it; correlation alone does not establish a usable signal.
2. Assess the source before modeling
Evaluate the dataset on dimensions that affect whether its observations can support the hypothesis:
- Coverage: Which companies, sectors, geographies, and periods are represented? Are the observations broad and deep enough for the question?
- Timing: How often does the source update? What do its timestamps mean, and how much delay may exist between an event, publication, and collection?
- Originality: Does the source contain a genuinely different observation, or does it repackage information already available elsewhere?
- Lineage: Can you trace the original source, processing steps, revisions, and dataset versions?
- Access and rights: Is the data public or commercially licensed, and do the applicable collection and use terms permit your intended use?
BlackRock’s alternative-data evaluation framework identifies originality, coverage, timeliness and latency, and transparency and lineage as relevant quality dimensions. A dataset’s commercial availability does not, by itself, establish permission for every use.

3. Preserve what was knowable at decision time
Keep separate records of the observation time, publication or filing time, collection time, and any later revision. Record the data version and processing steps where available. These distinctions matter because a historical test can accidentally use a correction, revision, or observation that was not available at the simulated decision time. A test built on that information does not faithfully represent the decision an investor could have made then.

For filings, distinguish the underlying period covered from when the filing became public. For scraped pages and feeds, retain the captured content alongside its source and timestamp when permitted. Do not assume that a timestamp labeled “date” means the same thing across providers.
4. Test incremental usefulness
Begin with a baseline that reflects the information or signals already available, then test whether the candidate data adds something beyond that baseline. BlackRock describes example approaches including event studies, cross-sectional regression, integration into broader models, and checks for redundancy. It also names measures such as Information Coefficient, Predictive R-squared, and horizon-decayed information ratio. These are evaluation approaches, not guarantees of future returns or universal acceptance thresholds.

Choose tests that fit the event, data frequency, and forecast horizon. Check relevant samples rather than relying on one favorable period, and compare results with appropriate benchmarks. A useful result should have an economic explanation consistent with the hypothesized mechanism, not just a persuasive metric.
5. Check robustness and alternatives
Ask whether the relationship holds across relevant companies, time periods, or event samples, and whether another signal already captures the same information. If the apparent effect vanishes when you account for existing signals, it may not add much. If it appears only under a narrow set of choices, investigate whether those choices were specified for a sound reason rather than selected after seeing the result.

How to handle social sentiment data
Social sentiment can be noisy evidence: posts may be stale, incomplete, misleading, or manipulated, and a sentiment tool’s collection and analysis methods may not be transparent. SEC/FINRA warn that such information can prompt impulsive decisions. Their April 3, 2019 investor bulletin states: “DO NOT RELY SOLELY on social sentiment investing tools to make investment decisions.”
Before using a sentiment measure, review disclosures about how the tool collects and analyzes information and any conflicts of interest it identifies. Compare its output with public company information and other analysis, and track outcomes against major or sector indices. Treat a sentiment spike as a prompt to investigate the event and source—not as a stand-alone instruction to buy or sell.

A screenshot can preserve a visual snapshot of a public webpage at a particular capture time. It may help document what a page displayed, but it is not a structured filing feed, proof that a page’s claims are accurate, or a validated investing signal. Preserve source details and relevant timestamps, and assess collection and reuse rights before gathering or using web content. A screenshot alone may not capture data hidden behind interactions or establish when the displayed information first became available.

For a developer who needs a captured page image as one piece of a documented workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. Its visual capture does not replace the source-quality, timing, rights, and validation checks described above. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.

This cURL request captures a page as a WebP image; replace the example URL with the public page you need to document. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. Include data acquisition and processing costs in the evaluation, but do not treat a paid feed as more reliable merely because it is expensive or commercially packaged. Assess whether the source updates consistently, whether missing or revised observations can be identified, and whether its history is adequate for the event you are testing. If the evidence cannot distinguish a real signal from timing artifacts, gaps, or overlap with existing data, do not present the result as established.
A striking backtest does not establish robustness or future performance. The sources discussed here explain evaluation methods and risks; they do not establish that any specific web dataset or strategy is profitable. They also do not settle individual vendors’ licensing terms. Check the applicable terms for the source and intended use.
Regulatory context
The SEC’s July 26, 2023 release describes a proposal concerning conflicts of interest associated with certain broker-dealer and investment-adviser uses of predictive data analytics. That release describes a proposal; it does not, on its own, establish a current final rule or a universal legal requirement for every investor using web data. Regulatory obligations can depend on the actor, activity, and jurisdiction, so do not infer a general legal conclusion from that proposal description.
