If an SRS-to-YouTube stream fails or shows a spinning wheel when one playlist video changes to the next, first check whether the failure starts at that file boundary. With FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, every listed file must have matching streams—including codecs and time bases—and inaccurate duration metadata can misplace the next file. If the files are not compatible, normalize them before concatenating, or use SRS’s documented script-based approach to publish files one at a time. Neither approach guarantees gapless transitions.
Identify how FFmpeg is reading the playlist
Start with the exact FFmpeg command and determine which input method it uses. An HLS .m3u8 playlist and FFmpeg’s concat or ffconcat demuxer are different input methods; do not assume their transition behavior is the same. The concat demuxer reads listed files in sequence and adjusts timestamps, but FFmpeg’s documentation requires that all files have the same streams, including the same codecs and time bases. See the FFmpeg documentation on the concat demuxer.
The transition failure may originate in FFmpeg reading the next file, in the stream it emits, in SRS receiving that stream, or only in YouTube playback. A spinning wheel alone does not identify which stage failed.
Check the files at the failing boundary
Compare the file that plays successfully with the next file in the sequence. Focus on the transition where the symptom begins, rather than assuming every item in the playlist is affected.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Streams: Check that both files have the same number and types of streams. An extra or missing audio or video stream can violate the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirement.
- Codecs: Compare the audio and video codecs. The concat demuxer requires matching streams; a change in codec is a reason to investigate incompatibility.
- Time bases: Compare stream time bases as well as codecs. FFmpeg explicitly includes time base among the properties that must match.
- Duration: Check whether each file’s reported duration is accurate. FFmpeg uses a file’s duration to position the following file; an incorrect duration can cause artifacts. The concat demuxer supports a
durationdirective to override the stored duration when appropriate.
Inspect the media metadata and the FFmpeg log around the transition. There is no single probe command or universal FFmpeg command line established for every build and playlist, so use the options and input format present in your actual command.
Choose a repair that matches the playlist
Option 1: Normalize the files, then use concat
If adjacent files differ in stream layout, codec, time base, or other relevant properties, make them consistent before concatenating. A September 22, 2024 FFmpeg-user discussion describes playback trouble when switching among videos with different formats, sizes, and aspect ratios; the response points to the concat demuxer’s matching-stream requirement and suggests transcoding to common properties. That is an individual report, not a controlled test or guarantee that normalization will solve every transition problem. Read the FFmpeg-user discussion.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Choose encoding settings for your source files and intended workflow rather than copying a command without checking its assumptions. Confirm the resulting files have compatible streams and timing before putting them back into the concat input.
Option 2: Publish files one at a time through SRS
SRS’s archived v4 ingest documentation says SRS does not ingest a file list directly and recommends using a script as the ingest tool to copy files to an RTMP stream one by one. This is a documented alternative design, not evidence that transitions will be seamless. Your script and deployment still need to handle process restarts, file ordering, and what happens between items. See SRS v4 ingest documentation.

The same SRS page documents FFmpeg-based file ingest and RTMP publishing examples; it says SRS adds -re for file ingest. These are general ingest details, not a verified set of current YouTube-specific encoder settings.
Compare the two approaches
| Consideration | Concat compatible files | Script files through SRS |
|---|---|---|
| Media requirement | Listed files must have matching streams, including codecs and time bases; duration accuracy matters for boundary timestamps. | Files are published one by one. The cited SRS documentation does not establish a matching-stream requirement for this workflow. |
| Playlist changes | Check how your concat input is built and updated; the cited documentation does not describe a universal live playlist-update procedure. | A script is the documented ingest tool for sending files one by one; playlist update behavior depends on the script and deployment. |
| Transition continuity | Compatibility and duration problems can cause boundary artifacts; no cited source guarantees gapless playback. | SRS documents this as a workaround, but does not promise gapless switching. |
| Operational work | Prepare compatible files and verify durations. | Implement and supervise the script, publishing process, and transitions in the specific deployment. |
Trace the failure through FFmpeg, SRS, and YouTube
- Mark the exact transition. Note which file ends, which file should start, and whether playback fails immediately or after a delay.
- Read the FFmpeg log at that point. Look for input-read errors, stream mismatches, timestamp or duration problems, and whether FFmpeg continues emitting output after the file changes.
- Check SRS separately. Determine whether SRS continues receiving the RTMP publish stream after FFmpeg reaches the next file.
- Check the YouTube playback symptom. If FFmpeg continues and SRS still receives the stream, but the issue appears only at YouTube playback, the available documentation does not establish a YouTube-specific cause. Do not assume the concat input is responsible without checking the stages.
The available documentation does not verify current YouTube Live encoder requirements, ingest endpoints, account configuration, or the stability of a particular connection. The cited SRS ingest guide is for archived v4 documentation, while FFmpeg’s documentation is rolling; check the documentation for the versions actually deployed.

Common transition symptoms and next checks
- FFmpeg reports a stream mismatch at the boundary: Compare stream count, stream types, codecs, and time bases in the two files. If they differ, normalize the inputs or use a workflow suited to sequential publishing.
- The next file starts at the wrong time or produces artifacts: Check the duration metadata used to place the next file. If it is inaccurate, evaluate whether an appropriate concat
durationdirective corrects it. - FFmpeg appears to stop when the item changes: Inspect the input-read error and confirm the next path or playlist entry is valid for the input method in use.
- FFmpeg keeps running but the stream fails downstream: Establish whether SRS is still receiving RTMP before attributing the problem to YouTube playback.
- The source files vary substantially: A September 2024 mailing-list response recommends transcoding to common properties for varied media. Treat that as a practical lead, not a guarantee for your files or deployment.
What to collect for a case-specific diagnosis
If the cause is still unclear, gather the exact FFmpeg command and version, the playlist contents, metadata for the files on either side of the failing boundary, and the relevant FFmpeg and SRS logs. Include the timestamps around the transition and say whether SRS continues receiving RTMP and whether the failure is visible only in YouTube playback. Those details distinguish a media compatibility problem from an ingest or playback-stage problem.
