Enable Restreamer’s process reconnect option, set a retry interval and a timeout, then save. That can help the process recover after an interruption; it cannot keep sending video to YouTube while your only broadband connection is completely down. For continuity through an ISP outage, you need the original connection restored or an independently configured second internet path.

What Restreamer’s recovery settings can—and cannot—do

datarhei Restreamer provides process-level controls for reconnecting after an interruption. In its Processing and Control documentation, the controls include whether the stream should reconnect, the interval before a retry, and a timeout that terminates a hanging process and marks it faulty.

These settings govern retry behavior; they do not create a second network connection. If Indian broadband is entirely unavailable and there is no alternate route, Restreamer cannot deliver video to YouTube until connectivity returns. The documentation does not prescribe universal retry-interval or timeout values, so choose and test values for your source and deployment rather than relying on a supposed standard.

Set up process recovery in Restreamer

  1. Open the stream’s process settings. In Restreamer, go to the process configuration for the stream you want to recover.
  2. Enable reconnect. Turn on the option that determines whether the stream should reconnect.
  3. Choose a reconnect interval. Set how many seconds the process waits before trying again. Restreamer’s documentation does not give a universally recommended interval.
  4. Set the timeout. Configure how long a process may hang before Restreamer terminates it and marks it faulty. The appropriate value depends on the source and setup; validate it before relying on it during a live event.
  5. Save the settings. Confirm that the process uses the saved configuration, then test recovery before an important broadcast.

Check the YouTube publishing setup

Restreamer’s YouTube setup guide describes configuring YouTube under Publication Service, entering a valid YouTube streaming ID, and saving. Verify that the stream is linked to the intended YouTube destination before testing recovery.

After the event, if preserving YouTube’s DVR archive matters, follow Restreamer’s guidance to end the stream on YouTube first. Interrupting Restreamer in the middle of the event may prevent YouTube from saving the archive.

Reduce disconnects caused by an overworked upload connection

A stream can fail even when broadband is technically connected if its upload capacity cannot sustain the chosen video settings. YouTube advises choosing a quality reliable for the connection, testing upload bitrate, testing with representative audio and motion before going live, and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. Its current encoder settings guidance provides bitrate and resolution recommendations; use the values appropriate to your format and test them on your own connection.

  1. Run an upload-speed test on the connection that will carry the live stream.
  2. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate the connection can sustain reliably rather than selecting the highest available quality by default.
  3. Test with representative motion and audio before the event; a static screen may not reveal the demands of the real program.
  4. During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. If the connection is unstable, lower the stream settings and test again.

Reducing bitrate can help with a constrained or variable connection, but it cannot restore a stream while the broadband path is completely unavailable.

What actually provides continuity during an ISP outage?

To continue transmitting while the main broadband line is down, the stream needs an independent route to the internet that is already configured and available. A cellular connection or hotspot is one possible category of backup, but compatibility and coverage depend on the exact location, device, and provider; the sources here do not establish a recommendation for any Indian carrier or locality.

Restream’s separate backup-stream service is not a setting in datarhei Restreamer. Its backup-stream guidance describes a two-source setup using two encoders and recommends two distinct network connections. The help page describes this as an Enterprise offering. Check current terms and destination behavior before depending on it. A second encoder on the same broadband line does not provide an independent network path.

Approach What it addresses Limit
Restreamer process reconnect Retries after a process interruption or malfunction Uses the available network path; it cannot deliver video over a broadband connection that is down.
Independent backup connection and source Can provide another route when the primary source or its network fails, if correctly configured Requires separate infrastructure. Restream’s documented two-source setup uses two encoders and recommends separate network connections; local compatibility must be verified.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not recover

  • The stream stays offline while broadband is down: This is expected if there is no alternate internet path. Restore the connection or switch to an independent route that is already configured.
  • The process does not retry after a brief interruption: Recheck that reconnect is enabled, that the interval and timeout are saved, and that the process is using the intended configuration. Test again with the actual source.
  • The process is marked faulty or hangs: Review the timeout and the source behavior. Adjust the timeout based on testing; Restreamer does not publish one universal value for every deployment.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check upload capacity, lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as needed, and run a representative pre-event test. Monitor YouTube’s health messages while live.
  • The stream reaches the wrong YouTube destination or fails to publish: Verify the Publication Service configuration and the YouTube streaming ID, then save and test the setup.
  • The DVR archive is missing after the event: Restreamer cautions that interrupting its process mid-event may prevent YouTube from saving the archive. For future events where the archive matters, end the stream on YouTube first.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service—not a Restreamer recovery setting. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud, so no home computer or broadband connection has to stay on for the stream to continue.

  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required; one free day per account.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
