A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Short answer: SingleFileZ and ScrapBook X served different needs. SingleFileZ made a self-extracting file for an individual page; ScrapBook X was designed to organize and search a collection of saved pages. SingleFileZ’s project says it has been merged into SingleFile, while ScrapBook X is legacy software whose maintainers point to WebScrapBook as its successor. If you need a current collection workflow, evaluate WebScrapBook rather than assuming ScrapBook X will work in your browser.
What is the main difference?
Think of SingleFileZ as a page-file format and ScrapBook X as a collection manager. They overlap in letting you keep pages for offline use, but they organize that material at different levels.
- SingleFileZ: saves a page as a self-extracting HTML/ZIP hybrid. Its archive can contain page resources such as images, fonts, stylesheets, and frames, with the option to extract them.
- ScrapBook X: was built around a browsable collection of captured pages, with features documented for arranging, searching, filtering, annotating, importing, and exporting captures.
A single-file archive does not automatically provide a searchable, annotated library. Conversely, a collection manager’s strengths do not make its underlying page files equivalent to SingleFileZ’s particular hybrid format.
Is SingleFileZ still a separate current project?
No. The SingleFileZ project README says: “It’s the end of an adventure, but that’s not bad news! SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile.” It directs readers to SingleFile’s self-extracting file-format option. Treat SingleFile as the current place to investigate that workflow, not SingleFileZ as a separate actively developed project.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
SingleFile’s documentation distinguishes ordinary HTML output from self-extracting formats. Ordinary HTML does not require JavaScript just to open the saved page; self-extracting formats have different browser-specific conditions. See the SingleFile README and format comparison for its current documentation.
What are the offline-opening trade-offs?
SingleFileZ-style self-extracting archive
The SingleFileZ FAQ says JavaScript must be enabled to open saved pages. It also notes that Chrome may need an extension or command-line switch to open local files, and that saving and opening take longer than with SingleFile. Those constraints matter if archives will be opened on different machines, in locked-down browser environments, or by people who expect a file to work without configuration.

Ordinary HTML from SingleFile
SingleFile’s ordinary HTML option has a different opening requirement: its documentation says JavaScript is not required merely to open the saved page. Check the format you choose rather than assuming every output from the merged project behaves like the self-extracting format.
Neither source establishes a comparative benchmark for speed, capture reliability, or storage size. Choose based on the format and workflow requirements, not an assumed performance advantage.

Which is better for organizing many saved pages?
ScrapBook X’s documented collection features make it the closer fit if your priority is managing many captures rather than producing one file per page. Its historical feature documentation describes organization, full-text search and filtering, annotations, and import/export. These are useful library functions: they help you find and contextualize a saved page later.
That feature description is historical, not proof of compatibility with a current browser. ScrapBook X’s maintainers say they will not implement WebExtension support and identify WebScrapBook as the successor for modern browser extension support. The repository’s latest listed ScrapBook X release is dated August 24, 2019. Confirm current compatibility and migration options for your specific browser before relying on ScrapBook X or moving an established archive.

How to choose by workflow
| Your priority | Better fit to investigate | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One self-contained file per page, with page resources together | SingleFile’s self-extracting format, which incorporates the SingleFileZ approach | JavaScript requirement, local-file behavior in your browser, extraction needs, and whether you need a separate index to find files |
| A library of pages with folders or tree organization, search, filters, and notes | A collection workflow such as WebScrapBook | Current browser compatibility, import/export behavior, and how existing ScrapBook X data can be migrated |
| Keeping pages in plain HTML for simpler offline opening | SingleFile ordinary HTML output | Whether the result captures the page content and resources you need, and how you will organize and search the resulting files |
| Storing or sharing captures through a remote destination | SingleFile’s documented optional destinations | SingleFile lists Google Drive, Amazon S3, GitHub, and WebDAV destinations; these are storage workflows, not collection-management equivalents |
If you already have a ScrapBook X archive, preserve a backup before experimenting with imports or migration. The available project information identifies WebScrapBook as its successor but does not establish that every ScrapBook X collection or annotation transfers without loss.

A screenshot preserves a visual record, not a browsable page archive with searchable text and annotations. If a screenshot is the output you need, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.
