Short answer: Owncast can receive a stream from OBS or another RTMP encoder, but it is not itself a YouTube destination or a documented 24/7 playlist scheduler. Configure Owncast and YouTube as separate outputs, use a continuous playback source and encoder process, and set audio deliberately for each destination. For Owncast, AAC at 192 kbps is a reasonable music-focused starting point; YouTube’s stereo guidance is AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.

How Owncast, the encoder and YouTube fit together

Owncast is a self-hosted livestreaming server. OBS or another RTMP-capable encoder sends it a live feed; YouTube Live has its own ingest setup. The documented Owncast workflow does not establish a native relay to YouTube, so plan for a separate YouTube output or another explicitly configured relay path. Do not assume that entering an Owncast stream key sends the same stream to YouTube.

A 24/7 broadcast also requires more than a stream key: something must keep supplying audio and video, the encoder must stay connected, and the broadcast must be monitored and recovered after interruption. YouTube describes persistent 24/7 broadcasts at the API level, but that does not provide playlist automation or guarantee uninterrupted operation.

Set up Owncast

  1. Choose a host. Run Owncast on a server you manage, in a container, or with a hosting provider. Owncast documents installation methods and lists pre-installed options including Linode/Akamai, Reclaim Cloud and Vultr. The right choice depends on who will maintain the server and what processing capacity and bandwidth are available; the documentation does not specify minimum hardware or a measured hosting cost.
  2. Install Owncast and secure its admin settings. Open the admin interface at /admin, change the initial admin password and replace the sample stream key. They are separate credentials. Owncast’s documented default web port is 8080 and RTMP port is 1935; the server setup documentation explains configurable ports and multiple keys. See installation and server configuration.
  3. Allow only needed network access. Configure the host firewall or cloud security rules for the ports your setup uses. Protect the admin interface and stream key, and rotate keys if they are exposed. S3-compatible storage offload is an optional scaling configuration, not a prerequisite for a basic stream.
  4. Configure OBS to send to Owncast. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose a custom RTMP service/server, and enter the Owncast host with port 1935 and the documented /live/ path. Enter the broadcast key in the stream-key field if the encoder offers one separately. Follow Owncast’s broadcasting guide and OBS guide for the host-specific format.
  5. Test a sustainable input profile. Match incoming quality to the encoder machine, network connection and Owncast host. Owncast cautions that unnecessarily high input quality consumes server resources. Confirm the stream appears correctly before leaving it unattended.
  6. Set up YouTube Live separately. Create/configure the YouTube broadcast and encoder destination for YouTube, using its own stream credentials and settings. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast (event metadata and lifecycle) from the live stream (encoder settings and transmission). Its API docs describe binding those resources and persistent-broadcast scenarios: YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

Audio and encoder settings

Do not treat the Owncast and YouTube bitrate recommendations as one universal setting. They apply to different output paths; if the audio is encoded separately for each destination, configure both profiles. If a relay passes through audio, verify whether it preserves the source or re-encodes it.

Destination Audio settings Video and keyframes
Owncast ingest AAC is the compatible recommendation. Owncast’s tiers are 96 kbps low, 128 kbps medium, 192 kbps high, 256 kbps higher and 320 kbps highest. For music-focused Gurbani, 192 kbps AAC is a practical starting point, not a tested requirement for every source or encoder. H.264 is the broad-compatibility recommendation. Set a two-second keyframe interval; Owncast warns against leaving it on automatic. Choose a sustainable input bitrate and quality.
YouTube Live For typical stereo, YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps, using AAC or MP3. Its 5.1 guidance lists 48 kHz at 384 kbps. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 and AV1 video. Use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and choose bitrate from the official table for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, the cited recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30.

Owncast says that music-focused streams may benefit from higher audio quality: “If you’re a music focused stream then maybe go higher.” Its default is to pass audio through unchanged. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the stream to its servers. Check the current YouTube encoder settings table before finalizing video settings; recommendations vary with resolution, frame rate and codec. Test a representative passage of the actual recording and watch stream health rather than judging settings from a short silent or static test.

Make playback continuous and handle interruptions

Neither the reviewed Owncast setup guidance nor YouTube’s high-level 24/7 API scenario supplies a ready-made Gurbani playlist scheduler. Treat continuous playback, encoder supervision, reconnect behavior and recovery monitoring as separate parts of the design.

  • Choose a playback source that can advance through the recordings continuously and provide both audio and video for the encoder.
  • Keep the encoder process and playback source running on a machine or host intended for continuous operation. A laptop that sleeps, loses power or drops its network connection will interrupt the source.
  • Plan how the encoder restarts after a crash or disconnection, and how you will know the stream has stopped. The reviewed documentation does not establish a specific playlist application, restart command or uninterrupted-uptime guarantee.
  • Monitor the Owncast input and YouTube stream health separately. A healthy Owncast feed does not prove that the distinct YouTube output is live.

A dedicated mini PC is one possible self-hosting option, but the official sources do not establish a minimum specification. A cloud host is another option; compare ongoing hosting cost, bandwidth and processing capacity, maintenance responsibilities, and recovery after an encoder or network interruption before choosing.

Check rights for recordings and visuals

Clear the specific recording, performance and accompanying visuals you plan to use. A devotional or traditional composition does not automatically establish that a particular recording or arrangement is free of rights restrictions. YouTube for Artists advises: “If you’re planning on using copyright-protected music during your live stream, we recommend coordinating with your label or distributor to avoid any issues, such as copyright strikes.” See YouTube for Artists guidance on going live for music channels. This is not a determination that any particular Gurbani recording is cleared.

Troubleshooting

  • OBS cannot connect to Owncast: Check that the host address, RTMP port 1935, /live/ path and stream key match the Owncast configuration, and that the host firewall allows the required connection.
  • The admin login or broadcast key fails: Confirm you are using the correct credential. The admin password and broadcast stream key are different settings; replace sample defaults and use the current key assigned in Owncast.
  • Owncast works but YouTube is offline: Treat YouTube as a separate destination. Check its broadcast and stream configuration, credentials, encoder output, and YouTube stream-health status.
  • Audio is distorted, silent or unexpectedly different at the destinations: Inspect each output’s audio codec, sample rate, channel layout and bitrate. Determine whether the path encodes separately or passes audio through, then test with representative source material.
  • The stream stops when unattended: Check whether the playback source, encoder host or network slept, lost power or disconnected. A continuous broadcast setting alone does not keep those components running; configure process supervision and monitoring for your chosen setup.
  • The host struggles with the stream: Reduce unnecessary input quality and reassess the host’s processing and bandwidth capacity. Owncast warns that higher-than-needed input quality consumes server resources.
