GraphQL is a query language and API specification; REST is an architectural style. Both can be used to build APIs, and they are not exact equivalents or mutually exclusive products. GraphQL lets a client select fields from a schema, while REST organizes interactions around resources, their identifiers, and a uniform interface—often HTTP.

What GraphQL and REST mean

GraphQL: a schema and client-selected fields

A GraphQL service exposes a schema describing its types and capabilities. A client sends an operation that starts at the schema’s query root and selects fields, which can include nested fields on related objects. The service returns data shaped by those selections and may return an errors field alongside data. Schemas can also define mutations and subscriptions, but the specification requires only a query root. The GraphQL specification calls the collective type-system capabilities of a service its schema: GraphQL specification, September 2025.

For example, an operation could ask for a user’s name and the titles of their recent posts. The client specifies those fields; it does not need to receive every field the service makes available for those objects.

REST: resources and a uniform interface

REST is an architectural style, not a query language or a particular protocol. A REST design centers on resources identified by URIs and representations transferred through a uniform interface. HTTP is widely used to implement that interface, with methods such as GET and POST carrying established semantics. REST itself does not provide a syntax for choosing arbitrary fields in a response.

In a REST API, a client might request a user resource and then a separate posts resource. The exact endpoints, response representation, and support for filters or expansions depend on the API. An API being called “REST” does not by itself establish that it follows every constraint in Roy Fielding’s architectural style: Fielding’s dissertation on REST.

How the approaches differ in practice

Decision area GraphQL REST
What a client addresses A schema and operation, commonly sent to one service URL A resource identified by a URI, used with methods and representations
Response selection The operation selects fields, including nested related data The endpoint commonly defines the representation; API-specific filters or expansions may also be available
Related data and requests One operation can request related fields and avoid fetching unused fields Related resources may require multiple requests, depending on endpoint design
Caching Multiple operations may share a URL, so caches may need query-aware or application-level strategies HTTP caching uses method, target URI, and response directives; GET responses are cacheable subject to HTTP rules
Server implementation Resolver behavior, batching, and query execution controls affect the work performed Resource and endpoint implementation determine behavior; methods and representations provide shared conventions
Governance Teams need a coherent, maintained schema and query execution policy Teams need consistent resource, representation, and method design

These are common design patterns, not guarantees about every API. Implementations vary, and the behavior of a specific service matters more than its label.

Is GraphQL faster than REST?

Not inherently. GraphQL’s field selection can reduce over-fetching, and one operation can gather related data that might otherwise require multiple REST requests. That does not prove that the operation uses less total backend work or returns sooner. Resolver design can trigger repeated data loads; batching can address that, but it is an implementation choice. The GraphQL FAQ discusses this concern: GraphQL FAQ.

REST performance also depends on how endpoints and representations are designed. A well-shaped endpoint may provide the data a client needs in one request; a poorly matched one may require additional calls or return unused fields. Compare the real workloads, server work, and latency of the designs you are considering rather than assuming the API style determines speed.

Can GraphQL use HTTP, and can it be cached?

Transport

GraphQL is transport agnostic and is typically served over HTTP. The GraphQL over HTTP specification describes how GraphQL semantics map onto HTTP requests and responses. Other transports can be used; the GraphQL FAQ, for example, mentions WebSockets for subscriptions. GraphQL and HTTP are therefore compatible concepts, not alternatives to one another: GraphQL over HTTP specification.

Caching

GraphQL is not inherently uncacheable. The practical complication is that distinct operations can use the same URL, so a cache keyed only by URL might not distinguish their response bodies. A GraphQL service can use query-aware or application-level caching strategies; the right design depends on how requests are sent and what data can safely be reused.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

HTTP caching rules apply to HTTP responses from both patterns. RFC 9110 describes method semantics, including when responses can be cached; GET responses are cacheable subject to Cache-Control and other rules. RFC 9111 describes cache keys and conditions for reusing stored responses. See RFC 9110, RFC 9111, and Apollo’s practical overview of GraphQL caching approaches. The latter is vendor guidance, not a neutral performance comparison.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Consider GraphQL when clients have varied data needs, need nested related data, or benefit from selecting only the fields they use—and when the team can maintain the schema and control query execution.
  • Consider REST when resource-oriented endpoints and HTTP method semantics fit the domain, when representations are predictable for clients, or when the team’s existing systems and cache design fit that model.
  • Compare the actual API designs when caching, backend load, latency, or governance is decisive. Neither label guarantees a particular performance or implementation outcome.

The two approaches can coexist in a system. A team can expose different interfaces for different clients or needs; the decision is about the API contract and implementation, not a forced choice between incompatible products.

ScreenshotNeo as an API-tooling alternative

For a separate developer task—capturing website screenshots through an API—ScreenshotNeo is an option to try first: it removes supported consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. It is not a GraphQL-versus-REST alternative; it is a website screenshot API and MCP server.

Its API accepts a URL in a GET request and can return a screenshot or PDF. For example, with an access key and the target URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. Plans include 1,000 screenshots a month free without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for the free plan.
