SingleFile requests access across websites so it can process pages in the tabs you choose to save, including multiple tabs in one action. That permission gives the extension the capability to access page data on sites where it is allowed; it does not, by itself, prove that SingleFile collects or uploads that data. The project says page processing happens in your browser and that it does not upload data to third-party servers.
Why does SingleFile need access to all websites?
SingleFile saves complete web pages as single HTML files, including their styling and resources. It can also save selected content, frames, links, and multiple tabs. Its FAQ explains that the tabs and all_urls permissions let it inject the code used to process pages in any tab; saving several tabs in one click is one example. See the SingleFile project FAQ.
Because a user may ask it to save a page on any site, the extension cannot be limited in advance to one fixed domain. Broad site access supports that cross-site workflow. In Chrome, you can narrow when it may access sites, though doing so can add a step or limit automatic and multi-site use.
What can “access your data on all websites” allow?
This is a capability permission, not a report of what the extension routinely does. Mozilla says access to all websites could allow an extension to read page content and information entered on pages, including usernames and passwords. That describes the potential associated with the permission; it does not establish that SingleFile reads credentials as part of saving pages or transmits them elsewhere. SingleFile’s FAQ states: “As stated in the privacy policy, SingleFile does not upload any data to third-party servers. All the work is done in your browser.” This is the project’s own description of its data handling, not an independent audit claim. The FAQ also notes that saving a page can download resources present on the page—such as images, CSS, frame contents, and fonts—that are not displayed or already cached. Downloading page resources is distinct from uploading the saved page to a third party.
What the other SingleFile permissions are for
The project FAQ describes these permissions as supporting specific features. Browser prompts and permission categories can vary by browser and release; for Firefox, consult the SingleFile Firefox Add-ons listing for the installed version’s current listing.

Mozilla’s permission guidance explains that download access can let an extension save through the browser’s download manager and access or update download details; access to browser tabs can expose a tab’s URL, title, and icon; and clipboard input can retrieve clipboard data. Those are general capabilities of permission types, not evidence SingleFile uses each permission for every possible purpose. The SingleFile FAQ also says its requested permissions are defined in its manifest.json.
How to limit SingleFile’s site access in Chrome
Chrome lets you choose how an extension gets site access. The exact menu wording can vary by Chrome version. Google’s current guidance is in Install and manage extensions.

- Open Chrome’s extensions menu, select the three-dot menu beside SingleFile, and choose This can read and change site data or the equivalent site-access control.
- Choose When you select the extension to grant access for the current open tab or window after you select SingleFile. If you close that tab or window, you need to select the extension again for access.
- Choose On the current site to allow automatic access on that site, or On all sites to allow automatic access across sites.
- To control individual exceptions, open
chrome://extensions, select Details for SingleFile, and use the site access controls to add or remove allowed sites.
Use the narrowest setting that fits your workflow. Click-to-run access gives you more control over when SingleFile can reach a site, while broader access is more convenient when saving across sites or working with multiple tabs. With restricted access, you may need to grant access or take additional action on a site SingleFile cannot access.

Does the all-sites permission mean SingleFile uploads my pages?
No. The permission describes potential access, not data transmission. SingleFile says its work happens in the browser and that it does not upload data to third-party servers.

Can I make SingleFile run only when I click it?
Yes. In Chrome, choose “When you select the extension” in its site-access control. You may need to select it again for each tab or window after closing it.
