Migrate in stages: choose the Playwright language and runner that fit your team, port one representative test, verify its behavior, then expand by feature area and move the suite into CI. This is not a method-name conversion. Playwright changes how tests are structured, how locators find elements, how waits and assertions behave, and how test isolation and parallel execution work.
The official Playwright migration example covers Protractor, not Selenium, so there is no documented one-to-one Selenium conversion recipe. Treat the mappings below as a practical framework for adapting your suite, and check syntax against the Playwright API and runner you select.
1. Inventory the Selenium suite before changing it
Build a picture of what the tests actually depend on. This makes it easier to migrate behavior deliberately instead of carrying old abstractions forward by habit.
- Language and runner: record the language, Selenium version, test framework, and how tests are discovered and invoked.
- Browser lifecycle: identify where WebDriver is created and disposed, whether it is local or remote, and how browser sessions are shared.
- Test structure: list base classes, page objects, setup and teardown hooks, and shared fixtures.
- Synchronization: find explicit and implicit waits, sleeps, polling helpers, and the conditions each one is intended to protect.
- Selectors: note the `By` strategies in use and flag long CSS or XPath paths that depend on DOM structure.
- Environment and state: document browser and operating-system coverage, Selenium Grid or other remote execution, accounts and test data shared between tests, and any ordering assumptions.
- Failure handling: record CI steps, retries, screenshots, logs, reports, and other artifacts engineers use to diagnose failures.
These are inventory prompts, not claims that every Selenium suite uses every feature. The point is to expose assumptions before selecting a Playwright design.

2. Choose the Playwright language and runner
Playwright is available across language APIs, but the Playwright Test documentation describes its Node.js test runner. Its examples use asynchronous test functions, explicit imports, and runner-provided fixtures such as `page`. A Java, Python, or .NET Selenium suite should first verify the corresponding Playwright language API and test-runner model; Node.js fixture examples should not be translated mechanically into another language’s hooks.
The Node.js example below illustrates the structure when using Playwright Test. It assumes the project’s test file is configured for that runner and that the application exposes a sign-in form with accessible labels and a welcome heading. Replace the URL, credentials, and expected text with values from your test environment.
Example: a small Playwright Test port
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('sign in and show the account page', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/login');
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill('qa@example.com');
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill('test-password');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Welcome' })).toBeVisible();
});
The test gets its `page` fixture from Playwright Test. Navigation, form interaction, and an awaited assertion make it a useful shape for a first port, but your representative test should also exercise any suite-defining setup such as authentication, frames, or windows. Validate the result locally before converting more tests.
3. Migrate one representative test, then expand by feature area
Choose a test that exercises common suite behavior, not merely the shortest test. Include a real user flow and the setup patterns that make the existing suite distinctive. Port it end to end and compare what it proves with the Selenium version.
Recommended Free Tools
- Start with navigation and setup. Recreate required authentication, application state, and browser setup using the selected Playwright API and runner.
- Translate interactions and assertions. Replace each Selenium action or assertion with an equivalent that expresses the same user outcome, rather than aiming for a line-for-line match.
- Run and inspect locally. Confirm the test reaches the same state and fails meaningfully when its expected result is not present.
- Expand in slices. Migrate related tests by feature area, applying what the pilot revealed to selectors, setup, data ownership, and diagnostics.
- Run in the target CI environment. Validate browser installation, configuration, reports, and failure artifacts before treating the migration as complete.
The official Playwright migration example demonstrates a staged port for Protractor. It can inform the shape of a migration, but it does not establish Selenium-specific mappings.
4. Translate Selenium selectors by intent
In Selenium, a test often asks for an element using `findElement` and a `By` selector. In Playwright, a locator describes how to find an element, and it is evaluated against the current page when used. That means a locator can resolve against the updated DOM after a re-render rather than holding on to an element from an earlier state.

Prefer selectors that reflect the interface
Where they match the application, prefer Playwright locators based on roles, labels, text, placeholder, alternative text, or title. A configured test ID is useful when the team wants an explicit, stable testing contract. Keep CSS or XPath where it is genuinely the most suitable stable selector, but review selectors tied to long DOM paths: structural changes can break them without changing what a user sees.
Make uniqueness deliberate
A locator used for an action should identify the intended control unambiguously. If a role-and-name locator matches more than one button, determine whether the test needs more context or whether the application has duplicate accessible names. Do not hide an ambiguous match by selecting the first result unless first-match behavior is actually part of the requirement.
Locator recommendations and behavior are described in the Playwright locator documentation.
5. Reassess every Selenium wait by what it proves
Do not delete waits wholesale or copy them all across. For each Selenium wait, write down the condition it protects, then decide whether a Playwright action or assertion already expresses that condition.
Element readiness and visible state
Playwright locator actions perform actionability checks. For a click, documented checks include that the locator resolves to exactly one element and that the target is visible, stable, able to receive events, and enabled. A separate wait whose only purpose is to establish click readiness may therefore duplicate checks the action performs.
Expected page state
Playwright web-first assertions retry until the expected condition succeeds or the timeout expires. An awaited assertion such as `await expect(locator).toBeVisible()` expresses a condition to keep checking, unlike an immediate read followed by a one-time comparison. See the actionability documentation and test assertion documentation for the documented behavior.

Business and external events
Actionability and retrying assertions do not establish that a backend job, business process, or third-party service has completed. Preserve or redesign waits for those distinct events using a condition that actually represents the event—for example, an application status or a relevant response—rather than assuming an element being clickable proves the whole workflow is done.
6. Rework setup and page objects around test isolation
Playwright Test fixtures provide isolated setup and cleanup for tests. Its built-in `page` belongs to a browser context; the browser can be shared for efficiency while a test receives an isolated context. This is a different default shape from a suite built around a shared mutable WebDriver or global browser state.
Map existing setup and teardown according to what owns the resource and what must be isolated. Do not preserve a shared browser or account merely because a Selenium base class did so. The right design depends on the suite’s reuse requirements and whether tests share accounts, data, or environment state.
Page objects do not have to be discarded. Playwright documents a page-object pattern; existing objects can be retained or reshaped to expose Playwright locators and asynchronous methods where that makes tests clearer. See the fixtures documentation and page object model guide.

7. Validate browser coverage and concurrency
Playwright Test documents support for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit on Windows, Linux, and macOS, locally or in CI. Check whether those browser engines and operating systems satisfy the team’s actual coverage requirements; do not assume that moving from Selenium also replaces a particular Grid or remote-browser architecture.
Parallelism deserves its own validation. Playwright Test runs separate test files in parallel by default, while tests within a file run in order by default. Workers are separate operating-system processes and cannot share in-memory state. A suite that relied on a shared account, mutable global fixture, or tests running in a particular order may behave differently under this model.

- Confirm each test can start from its own required state.
- Check that accounts and mutable test data are isolated or coordinated.
- Verify external services and shared environments tolerate concurrent activity.
- Increase worker counts only after tests behave correctly under the intended execution model.
Use Playwright projects and worker configuration to express the browser matrix and execution settings you need. See the Playwright documentation for current setup and runner guidance.
8. Move the suite into CI after local behavior is sound
CI changes depend on the team’s platform and remote-execution architecture. Plan to install the browser binaries and any required dependencies for the Playwright version in use, configure the desired browser projects, and deliberately set retries, timeouts, and reporters. The Playwright installation guidance includes local and CI execution and offers GitHub Actions workflow scaffolding; it is not a guarantee of drop-in compatibility with an existing Selenium Grid.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteValidate diagnostics as part of the move: confirm that a failed test leaves the reports, screenshots, traces, or logs the team needs and that engineers can retrieve them from the CI run. Check network access, authentication, and artifact retention in the target environment rather than relying only on a local pass.
9. A conceptual Selenium-to-Playwright map
This table is a way to frame decisions, not a complete API conversion reference. Exact syntax and lifecycle behavior depend on the source language and test framework as well as the Playwright API you select.
| Selenium concept | Playwright direction | Migration caution |
|---|---|---|
| `WebDriver` lifecycle | `browser`, `context`, and `page`; or Playwright Test fixtures when using that runner | Review whether global mutable browser state conflicts with per-test isolation. |
| `findElement` and `By` | Locators such as role, label, test ID, or `locator` | Recheck selector intent and uniqueness instead of retaining brittle DOM paths by default. |
| Wait for visibility or click readiness | Actionability-aware locator actions or retrying assertions | Retain synchronization for distinct application or external conditions. |
| Immediate assertion on current text or state | Awaited web-first `expect` assertion | Account for retry and timeout semantics. |
| Shared setup hooks | Test and fixture lifecycle | Map by isolation and resource ownership, not hook-name similarity. |
| Browser matrix and parallel jobs | Projects and worker configuration | Validate test-data independence and shared environment assumptions. |
10. Troubleshoot common migration failures
A locator matches nothing or more than one element
Likely cause: the converted selector does not express the same intent, the page has not reached the expected state, or the selector is ambiguous. Fix: inspect the accessible interface, choose a role or label where appropriate, and make the target context specific without relying on an incidental DOM path.
A click times out despite an apparently correct selector
Likely cause: the target is not yet actionable—for example, it is hidden, moving, disabled, covered, or not uniquely located. Fix: inspect the page state and the failure details, then correct the locator or the condition leading to the click. Avoid adding a fixed sleep until you know what state needs to be awaited.

An assertion fails intermittently after navigation or an action
Likely cause: the test checks a one-time value or checks the wrong state, or the expected result depends on an application event beyond the locator’s actionability. Fix: use an awaited web-first assertion for the condition being tested; if the test depends on a distinct business or external event, synchronize on evidence of that event.
Tests pass alone but fail in a parallel run
Likely cause: tests share mutable accounts, records, or environment state, or depend on execution order. Fix: isolate or coordinate shared state, identify ordering assumptions, and validate independence before increasing workers.
The suite works locally but not in CI
Likely cause: browser binaries or system dependencies are missing or mismatched, or the CI environment differs in network access, credentials, configuration, or artifact handling. Fix: verify the installation steps for the selected Playwright version and operating system, the configured projects and environment variables, and the reports or diagnostics produced by a failed run.
11. Cost, reliability, and migration trade-offs
The documentation establishes Playwright’s browser support, fixture model, actionability checks, assertions, parallel behavior, and CI setup; it does not establish how much faster or cheaper a particular team’s suite will become, nor how long its migration will take. Those outcomes depend on the suite’s language, existing abstractions, test data, browser coverage, and execution architecture.
For a realistic evaluation, compare what your team must maintain: current browser and operating-system coverage, runner and language fit, remote execution, isolation and data strategy, synchronization semantics, parallel behavior, and failure diagnostics. Measure the pilot and CI runs in your own environment before making performance or cost claims.
Or skip the browser setup
If the migration also calls for screenshots of pages outside your test suite, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; these examples save a WebP response for Stripe. Read the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.
