Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf an ArchiveBox snapshot is missing content that appears in your browser, first check whether ArchiveBox’s Chrome runtime and JavaScript extractor packages are available. Then confirm the relevant capture plugins ran, inspect logs for timeouts or access failures, and check whether ArchiveBox skipped the URL because it was already indexed. Compare the specific outputs—such as rendered DOM, SingleFile, screenshot, PDF, and Wget—because each captures a different kind of artifact.
Identify what failed before changing settings
“The page” is not a single ArchiveBox output. A snapshot may contain some artifacts but not others, and a successful capture by one method does not prove another method ran successfully. Start by noting which expected output is absent or incomplete and what the run reported.
- No new snapshot or visible processing: Check the URL and ArchiveBox stdout or Web UI. A URL already in the archive may be skipped by the only-new behavior.
- Chrome extractor errors or missing browser-rendered artifacts: Check the Chrome provider and version reported by
archivebox version. - SingleFile, Readability, or Node errors: Check whether ArchiveBox’s managed Node and extractor packages are installed.
- A snapshot exists but is blank or incomplete: Identify whether the problem affects DOM HTML, SingleFile HTML, screenshot, PDF, Wget, or several of them.
- Content appears only after waiting, scrolling, or clicking: Determine what the live page needs. A page may depend on delayed loading, scrolling, interaction, or authentication rather than simply JavaScript execution.
- The site fails in a normal browser or blocks automation: Investigate reachability and access first. A capture failure is not necessarily a JavaScript timing issue.
ArchiveBox’s official troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting version information and stdout or Web UI errors, and notes that not every site archives effectively with every method. See the ArchiveBox troubleshooting documentation.
Run a focused diagnostic sequence
1. Record the environment and the exact failure
From your ArchiveBox data directory, run:
archivebox version
Keep the relevant output and error messages. Record the ArchiveBox version, selected Chrome provider, browser version and projected path, operating system or container context, target URL, which artifacts were produced, and whether the URL had been archived before. Redact credentials and private URL parameters before sharing logs.

2. Install or resolve Chrome through ArchiveBox
If Chrome-backed extractors are failing or their outputs are missing, run:
archivebox install chrome
archivebox version
ArchiveBox resolves a compatible host browser or a managed build through abxpkg. Use the version output to check which provider, version, and path were selected. Avoid substituting an unrelated browser path unless documentation for your installed release directs you to do so.
3. Install the managed JavaScript extractor dependencies when logs point to them
If the errors mention Node.js, SingleFile, or Readability, run this from the data directory:

archivebox install node singlefile readability
archivebox version
ArchiveBox manages these dependencies through abxpkg; a separate global npm installation is not the documented fix. Check the resulting version information and then recapture.

4. Confirm the intended plugins were selected
Chrome is a requirement for browser-based outputs such as DOM capture, SingleFile, screenshots, and other Chrome plugins. Inspect the run’s selected plugin list and relevant enabled settings. ArchiveBox configuration can be set with archivebox config, ArchiveBox.conf, or environment variables; a plugin whitelist can also help target a capture. Consult the ArchiveBox plugin marketplace and configuration for the version you run, because plugin availability and settings can change.
5. Change timeouts only when the logs support it
TIMEOUT caps one extractor invocation per snapshot, and plugins may have their own <PLUGIN>_TIMEOUT values. If logs show a slow extractor or a timeout, raise the relevant limit and recapture. The configuration guidance gives a recommended range of 30–3000 seconds and warns that values below 5 seconds can cause Chrome hangs and broader failures. Verify these settings against your installed release before applying them. A longer timeout will not fix a blocked URL, missing plugin, login requirement, or page that never exposes the expected content.

6. Check delayed and interaction-dependent content
Inspect the live page to learn whether content appears after navigation, scrolling, a click, or login. The plugin marketplace documents an infinite-scroll expansion plugin for scroll-driven pages and a screenshot wait-for-text option for waiting for a known visible phrase. These are options to try, not guarantees for every site; a page requiring a multi-step interaction may need more than a simple wait.
7. Force a fresh capture if the URL was already archived
To request a new capture of an indexed URL, use:
archivebox add --no-only-new URL
Replace URL with the target address. Do not move or delete the archive/ tree to work around deduplication; use the supported recapture option instead.
8. Compare the outputs independently
Inspect the DOM HTML and screenshot to see what Chrome rendered. Compare SingleFile when you need a self-contained HTML artifact, Wget when you want a downloaded resource clone, and PDF when a visual document is useful. Different outputs can succeed or fail independently, and replay behavior may differ from what the saved file looked like during capture. ArchiveBox’s configuration documentation and plugin marketplace describe the available methods and options.

If a screenshot succeeds while a DOM artifact is missing, that suggests a different failure point than if all Chrome-backed outputs fail. Treat that as a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee about the underlying cause.
9. Escalate with reproducible details
If the page is reachable, dependencies are installed, and errors continue, report the target URL with private information removed, ArchiveBox version and dependency output, relevant logs, selected plugins, and the artifacts that were or were not produced. Some sites cannot be archived effectively with every method, so include the output comparison rather than describing the entire snapshot as simply “broken.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand why ArchiveBox outputs differ
ArchiveBox uses Chrome during archiving to run page JavaScript and capture rendered content, but the resulting formats are not interchangeable. A rendered DOM dump, self-contained SingleFile HTML, screenshot, PDF, and Wget clone preserve different things. For diagnosis, ask which property matters: rendered state, inclusion of images and other resources, portability, reproducibility, or safe replay.

- Rendered state: Does the artifact reflect what Chrome rendered after page scripts ran?
- Completeness: Are images, styles, frames, and other resources present?
- Portability: Is the result one self-contained HTML file, a downloaded folder, a visual document, or an image?
- Reproducibility: Does the result depend on timing, authentication, or user interaction that may differ on another run?
- Security: Does opening an artifact execute untrusted page JavaScript, and under what origin or security mode?
Keep replay security separate from capture troubleshooting
Capturing a page and replaying an archived copy are separate problems. ArchiveBox warns that dangerous full-replay modes can run archived JavaScript on the same origin as the admin UI and should not be exposed on a public hostname. Do not weaken replay security settings as a shortcut for a capture failure; diagnose the capture path while retaining a replay mode appropriate to your deployment. See the configuration documentation.
Or skip the browser setup
For a standalone screenshot or PDF of a page, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request with a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. This is a separate capture service, not a way to repair ArchiveBox’s own snapshot pipeline.
For a WebP screenshot, use the API key from your ScreenshotNeo account. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does installing Chrome guarantee every JavaScript page will archive correctly?
No. It resolves a browser-runtime issue, but pages can still depend on access, authentication, timing, interaction, or a capture method that does not preserve their content.
Should I change ArchiveBox replay settings if the saved page behaves incorrectly?
Not as a capture fix. Capture and replay are separate, and permissive replay modes can expose the admin UI to archived JavaScript.
