Competitive intelligence (CI) is the lawful and ethical gathering and analysis of information about competitors and their industries to help an organization make better decisions and reach its goals. Facts alone are not intelligence: the work becomes useful when evidence is analyzed in relation to a decision. What competitive intelligence is—and what it is for
CI is a decision-support practice, not a contest to accumulate the largest file of competitor facts. It can help an organization understand changes in its competitive environment and consider what to do. Its scope includes both competitors and the industries in which they operate. The decision being supported should be clear from the start; otherwise, research can produce information without a useful conclusion.

How CI differs from corporate spying
The difference is not simply whether information is about a competitor. CI must be collected and used within applicable law, ethical standards, and company rules. Corporate spying involves improper means such as unauthorized access, deception, theft, or improper acquisition of confidential information; calling an activity “competitive intelligence” does not make those methods acceptable.

- Permissible example in SCIP’s guidance: researching public patent records.
- Not acceptable: obtaining a password to a competitor’s site without authorization. SCIP describes this as illegal and a violation of its code.
- Misleading pretext: applying for a competitor job with no intention of taking it in order to extract information.
- Interviews: SCIP expects practitioners to disclose their identity and organization, rather than misrepresent who they are.
Public availability by itself does not settle every ethical or legal question. Apply local law and your organization’s rules to the particular source and method. The following is a practical synthesis of SCIP’s definition and resource areas, not a workflow SCIP requires every organization to follow.

- State the decision or uncertainty. Define what the team needs to decide and what it does not yet know. Keep the question narrow enough that evidence can inform it.
- Set collection boundaries. Identify applicable law, company rules, and professional standards before collecting. Decide which sources and methods are appropriate; do not use unauthorized access, false identities, or improperly acquired confidential information.
- Collect relevant evidence transparently. Gather information that bears on the question, and be candid about identity and organization in interviews. Record where evidence came from and what it can establish.
- Analyze rather than compile. Connect the evidence to the decision. Distinguish supported findings from assumptions or unresolved questions; a list of competitor facts is not, by itself, a conclusion.
- Communicate realistic recommendations. Explain the basis and limits of the findings, then make recommendations that are honest and proportionate to the evidence. SCIP specifically expects realistic recommendations. SCIP’s ethics guidance
How to choose research approaches and tools
There is no universally best CI method or platform established by the sources cited here. As practical editorial guidance, evaluate an approach against the decision it can inform, the evidence available, collection effort and cost, timeliness, and legal and ethical constraints. A tool can help collect or analyze information, but it cannot make an improper collection method acceptable or turn weak evidence into a reliable conclusion.
