ArchiveBox’s current Compose deployment supports Ubuntu on amd64 and arm64. After it starts, open /admin/ on the machine’s hostname or IP to complete setup.
Check the Ubuntu host and Docker prerequisites
ArchiveBox recommends Docker Compose for its bundled installation. Its current deployment guide requires Docker Engine or Docker Desktop with Docker Compose v2, and lists Ubuntu on amd64 and arm64 as supported. See the ArchiveBox install overview and official Docker deployment guide.
Before proceeding, make sure Docker is installed and the Compose v2 command works:
docker --version
docker compose versionThe second command should report a Compose v2 version. If it is unavailable, install or update Docker and its Compose plugin using the instructions for your Ubuntu release in Docker’s documentation; the ArchiveBox procedure below assumes these prerequisites are already working.

Install and start ArchiveBox

Create a project directory and its persistent data directory:
mkdir -p ~/archivebox/data && cd ~/archivebox -
Download the current official Compose file:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ArchiveBox/docker-archivebox/main/docker-compose.yml -o docker-compose.yml -
Pull the image specified by that Compose file:
docker compose pull -
Start the service in the background and wait for it to become healthy:
docker compose up -d --wait
The Compose project lives in ~/archivebox; its data directory is the host-side location for the persistent collection data. Keep the directory in a stable location and include it in your backup plan if the archive matters to you. The official workflow downloads the Compose file from a mutable branch, so the exact image version is not pinned by these commands.
Complete first-run administration
Once the container is running, open http://HOSTNAME-OR-IP:PORT/admin/ in a browser, replacing the hostname or IP and port with values appropriate to your setup. Complete the setup wizard, which configures the canonical URL and security mode. For the default host-port mapping, use the port specified by the downloaded Compose file. The current deployment guide documents container port 5797; set ARCHIVEBOX_PORT to choose a different host port while the container continues listening on 5797.

The same guide documents BASE_URL and SERVER_SECURITY_MODE as environment-variable overrides for wizard settings. Optional ADMIN_USERNAME and ADMIN_PASSWORD variables support creating an administrator without the interactive wizard. Check the Compose file you downloaded before changing environment values, because defaults and configuration can change over time.
Verify the installation and archive a test URL
Run these commands from ~/archivebox, where the Compose file is located:
docker compose exec archivebox archivebox version
docker compose exec archivebox archivebox add --depth=1 'https://example.com'
docker compose exec archivebox archivebox statusThe version command confirms the CLI is available in the running service. The add command attempts a shallow archive of the example URL; status reports the collection state. To watch service output while diagnosing startup or capture problems, use:
docker compose logs -f archiveboxThe image also provides a /health/ health check. Use docker compose exec for a command in the already-running service; for a one-off command in a temporary service container, the deployment documentation distinguishes docker compose run --rm archivebox ....

Port, version, and persistence details
Use the current deployment workflow
The commands in this guide follow the current Docker deployment documentation, which downloads the Compose file from the docker-archivebox repository and describes a container listener on port 5797. Older Docker instructions and general project pages may show different defaults or manual initialization steps. Do not combine their port numbers or setup sequence with this Compose file unless you have checked the exact configuration you are running.
Understand what is and is not pinned
The quickstart retrieves a Compose file from the repository’s mutable main branch, and the deployment material describes a moving development image rather than specifying a fixed release for this procedure. For reproducible deployments, inspect the fetched Compose file and pin a reviewed image version or repository commit according to your maintenance policy. The cited quickstart does not establish a particular release number or image digest.
Protect the collection data
The mounted host-side ~/archivebox/data directory is the important persistent collection location. Back it up using a method that fits your retention needs. The installation instructions establish where the data is stored, but do not prescribe a backup product or schedule.
Troubleshooting common installation problems
docker compose is not recognized
Compose v2 is a prerequisite. Install or update Docker Compose for your Ubuntu installation, then confirm docker compose version succeeds before continuing.

The service does not start or --wait does not complete
Inspect the service output with docker compose logs -f archivebox and confirm the image pull completed. Also check that you ran the commands from the directory containing the downloaded docker-compose.yml.
The admin page does not load
Use the hostname or IP by which the host is reachable and the host port mapped by the Compose file. If you set ARCHIVEBOX_PORT, use that host-side port; the container listener remains 5797. For remote access, confirm that the host and any network controls permit access to the chosen port. The installation guide does not configure a firewall, TLS, or reverse proxy.
Archive data seems missing after recreating the service
Check that you are using the same Compose project directory and host-side data directory. The installation flow stores the collection in the mounted data location, so starting a different project configuration may point the service at a different directory.
