Playwright is the better fit for repeatable website testing: it can recreate a page state in code, capture it, and compare later runs with a saved screenshot baseline. With Playwright Test, the first toHaveScreenshot() run creates a reference image; later runs compare against it. Store and review that baseline as part of the test workflow. When an intentional interface change should update the expected image, review the difference first, then update snapshots with npx playwright test --update-snapshots. Updating a baseline simply to silence an unexplained mismatch can conceal a real regression.

Make screenshot comparisons repeatable
A screenshot assertion is only as consistent as the conditions that produce its image. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Run comparisons in the same environment used to create the baseline; do not assume that a baseline captured on one machine will be pixel-identical everywhere.
- Keep the browser and host environment consistent between baseline creation and test runs.
- Navigate to a defined state and control interactions, consent, and other setup that affects what appears on screen.
- Identify volatile content such as rotating promotions, timestamps, or live data. Mask known regions or apply screenshot styles where appropriate.
- Use the capture scope that matches the test: viewport, full page, a clipped area, or a specific element.
- Inspect visual differences before accepting new baselines, especially when the change was not expected.
Masking and styles reduce known sources of noise; they do not eliminate the need for a stable environment or thoughtful baseline review.

Troubleshooting Playwright screenshot tests
- A screenshot differs on another machine: check whether the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode differs. Run in the baseline environment before treating the mismatch as an application change.
- A test fails intermittently around a dynamic region: identify the changing content and decide whether to control its data, wait for a stable state, or mask/style that region. Avoid hiding broad areas that could contain meaningful regressions.
- The baseline changes unexpectedly: do not immediately run with
--update-snapshots. Inspect the rendered page and diff, establish whether the UI change is intended, and update the reference only after review. - The captured scope is wrong: choose the appropriate API form—viewport screenshot,
fullPage, locator screenshot, or clipping—and confirm the page is in the intended state first. - You only need to send a marked-up bug image: a scripted baseline test may be unnecessary; Nimbus’s manual capture, annotation, blur, and sharing workflow is more direct.
