Use an LLM to turn retrieved web content into structured answers—not to replace the steps that find and fetch pages. A reliable workflow defines fields first, chooses search, scraping, or crawling to retrieve the right pages, cleans and segments the content, asks the model for schema-shaped output, then validates each result against its source.
What LLM web scraping does—and does not do
Web scraping with an LLM is a pipeline: software retrieves page content, and a language model interprets relevant text and returns requested information. Retrieval and reasoning are separate jobs. A model cannot reliably extract facts from a page your workflow never fetched or from content it could not access.
- Web search discovers candidate pages for a question. OpenAI documents web search in its Responses API, including sourced citations: Web search.
- Scraping retrieves content from a known URL.
- Crawling discovers and processes multiple pages across a site or section. Firecrawl describes crawling, page rendering, and Markdown or structured JSON output in its Web Crawling API documentation.
These jobs can be combined, but they are not interchangeable. Search results are not a substitute for fetching and checking the underlying page, and crawling a whole site is unnecessary when a handful of known URLs will answer the question.
1. Define the data before collecting pages
Write down the question the extracted dataset must answer, then specify the fields and their expected types. Decide which fields are required, which are optional, and how missing or unsupported values should be represented. For example, use null for a missing price rather than asking the model to infer one.

| Field | Type | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| product_name | string | Required; copy the name stated on the page. |
| price | number or null | Use null if the page provides no current price. |
| currency | string or null | Use the currency shown alongside the price; do not guess. |
| source_url | string | Keep the URL associated with the retrieved page. |
| evidence | string | Include a short supporting passage where feasible. |
A schema makes the desired shape explicit, but it does not establish that extracted values are correct. Keep a traceable link from every record to its source page and, when practical, to the passage that supports each value.
2. Choose retrieval to match the scope
Known, mostly static pages
For a small set of known URLs, a basic HTTP fetch may be enough if the useful text is present in the returned HTML. Convert the result to readable text and retain the canonical URL, fetch time, and page title.
Pages that depend on JavaScript
If the relevant content appears only after scripts run or interaction occurs, use a rendering-capable browser or service. Confirm the rendered page actually contains the target content before sending it to the model; a successful network response alone does not prove that the data was present.
Many pages or unknown page locations
Use search to discover candidate pages, then fetch and evaluate the pages you intend to use. Use a crawler when the task requires discovery and processing across a site section or larger corpus. Firecrawl describes site crawling, rendering, and Markdown or structured JSON outputs at its product page. Compare the approach against your scope, output needs, and current service limits.

Respect access controls
Review the site’s terms and crawler rules, use conservative request rates, and do not bypass authentication, CAPTCHA, or other access barriers. Google says its standard crawlers respect site choices about access and use in Things to Know about Google’s Web Crawling. Anthropic says its bots respect robots.txt and anti-circumvention technology, including not attempting to bypass CAPTCHAs, in its crawler FAQ. Those statements describe the named operators, not every crawler.
3. Prepare content for the model
Convert the fetched page to readable text or Markdown, remove navigation and repeated boilerplate where possible, and split long pages into meaningful sections. Send the model only the section that can answer the question rather than a whole-site dump. Preserve page title and URL as metadata so the output remains attributable to its source.
For each chunk, identify the URL and relevant passage in the prompt or input object. If content is too long, split at meaningful boundaries such as headings or product records rather than cutting arbitrary fragments that could separate a value from its context.
4. Ask for bounded, schema-shaped extraction
State the task narrowly, define the output schema, and tell the model what to do when evidence is absent. For example:

Extract the product name, current listed price, and currency from the supplied page text. Return one JSON object matching the specified schema. Use null for a field not explicitly supported by the text. Do not infer missing values. Include the source URL and a short exact supporting passage for each non-null value.
Use a structured-output or JSON-schema feature when available in your model or extraction service. Firecrawl documents Markdown and structured JSON output options in its Web Crawling API materials. Structured output constrains the response format; it does not independently verify the truth of a value.
5. Validate every result against its source
Run mechanical checks before using or storing the output. Reject malformed JSON, missing required fields, wrong types, duplicate records, and values that violate your rules. Keep unknown values explicit instead of silently filling gaps.
- Check that each record has a source URL and that it matches the page actually fetched.
- Verify important extracted values against the cited passage or page.
- Flag unsupported claims, ambiguous values, and conflicting page content for review.
- Record failures and retry only when there is a clear cause, such as a transient fetch error or a correctable format issue.
For research answers, cite the underlying pages and distinguish direct extracted facts from model-written summaries. OpenAI describes its web-search tool as returning sourced citations in its web-search documentation. A citation helps a reviewer trace a claim; it is not a substitute for checking whether the cited source supports it.

6. Choose an implementation by its trade-offs
Before selecting a tool or building the pipeline, compare the parts that affect the job:
- Scope: number of URLs and whether discovery is needed.
- Page behavior: static HTML versus JavaScript-rendered content.
- Output: raw HTML, Markdown, or schema-shaped JSON.
- Provenance: whether source URLs, passages, and citations must accompany results.
- Operations: throughput, rate limits, retries, and how much control you need over fetching.
- Cost: current model and service pricing for your expected usage.
OpenAI notes that web-search usage follows the underlying model’s tiered rate limits in its documentation. Verify current limits and pricing with each provider; they can change. No extraction accuracy or cost-saving guarantee follows merely from using an LLM.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.robots.txt, privacy, and search visibility
A robots.txt file is a crawler-access protocol, not a privacy mechanism or a guarantee that a URL will stay out of search results. Google explains that blocked URLs can still be indexed in some cases and recommends authentication for access restriction or noindex for search exclusion in its Robots.txt Introduction and Guide.
Google also documents that robots.txt rules apply to the host, protocol, and port where the file is served; a file on one subdomain does not automatically set rules for another. See How Google Interprets the robots.txt Specification. Implementations differ, so do not assume every crawler supports every extension or interprets rules identically.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an LLM scrape a website without a separate retrieval step?
Not as a dependable general workflow: the page content still has to be available to the model, whether fetched by your code, a crawler, or a web-search tool.
Does robots.txt make a page private?
No. It gives crawler instructions; use authentication to restrict access.
Does JSON-schema output prove extracted values are correct?
No. It constrains format, so values still need validation against their source pages.
