If a web clipper’s PDF export cuts off Indian-language text, first compare the affected passage on the original webpage with the same passage in the PDF. That separates a page-rendering problem from an export or PDF-viewer problem, although it does not by itself prove the cause. Then identify whether the text is missing, shown as boxes, malformed, clipped at an edge, or merely hard to select. The exact clipper and symptom determine which fix to try.
Identify what “cut off” means
Before changing settings, note a short passage where the problem is easy to see. “Cut off” can describe several different failures, and they point to different parts of the process:
- Text is absent: the page parser may have omitted content, or the export may have failed to include it.
- Characters appear as boxes: missing or unavailable font information is one possibility. A font check can help, but boxes do not establish the cause of every export problem.
- Glyphs look incomplete or incorrectly shaped: investigate the script’s rendering and font path as well as the export.
- Text is cut at a page or column edge: inspect clipping, page layout, scaling, and the capture mode.
- Line wrapping is broken, or text is difficult to select or search: compare the PDF’s appearance with its text-selection behavior. A screenshot-based capture can look correct while not preserving selectable text.
Record the language and script, webpage, browser and version, operating system, clipper and version, capture mode, PDF viewer, and whether the same issue happens on another page. This gives you a reproducible starting point rather than a guess about the cause.
Compare the webpage with the PDF
- Open the original page in the browser used for clipping and locate the exact passage.
- Compare its appearance with the exported PDF in the same viewer, then, if possible, open that PDF in another viewer.
- If the page is already wrong, start with the page content and the fonts available to the browser. If the page looks right but the PDF does not, focus on the capture path, conversion, layout, and PDF rendering.
- Retry the export once and keep both files so you can compare the result.
This comparison is a useful diagnostic inference, not a guaranteed root-cause test. Page capture and PDF conversion have separate controls, and a failure can still depend on the particular page, browser, clipper, or viewer.

Change one capture variable at a time
If your clipper offers alternatives, test a different capture mode or select the affected passage manually. Evernote’s guidance for pages that clip incorrectly suggests trying another clip type, selecting content manually, or using screenshot capture (Evernote clipping guidance). Those are Evernote-specific examples; use equivalent controls only if your clipper provides them.
- Manual selection: useful for checking whether the page parser is omitting the passage outside the selected region.
- Another clip type: useful for checking whether one capture path is responsible.
- Screenshot capture: may preserve the visible appearance, but can make text unsearchable or unselectable. It is a trade-off, not a universal fix for text-based PDF export.
Change only one setting or mode per attempt and compare the resulting passage. If several options change at once, it is harder to tell which affected the output.

Check script shaping and fonts
For Devanagari, the issue may involve how a sequence of characters is shaped, not just whether a font contains each character individually. W3C describes virama-linked consonant clusters and the conjunct forms they can produce. Its Devanagari Layout Requirements draft focuses on Hindi and Marathi; it should not be treated as a technical description of every Indian script or every PDF engine. The document is a W3C Group Draft Note published on 2024-07-09, and W3C says Group Draft Notes are works in progress that are not endorsed by W3C or its Members.
If the PDF shows boxes, inspect its font properties in your PDF viewer, if available. Printster’s Hindi PDF display and printing guide identifies missing embedded Indic fonts as one possible cause of boxes and discusses embedding fonts in authoring or export workflows. That is vendor guidance for Hindi PDF display and printing, not proof that font embedding explains text cut off by every web clipper.

Review conversion settings if you use Adobe Acrobat
Adobe Acrobat’s web-page-to-PDF conversion flow documents controls for input encoding, language-specific font settings, expanding scrollable blocks, and page layout. If you are using that flow, test only the setting relevant to your symptom, export again, and keep the original for comparison. Settings and controls depend on the conversion path: do not assume that browser-native printing or an unnamed clipper has the same options.
- Input encoding: check whether the conversion is interpreting the page’s text correctly.
- Language-specific fonts: inspect the script/font settings when characters are absent or malformed.
- Scrollable blocks: test expanding them if content inside a scrollable region is missing.
- Page size, orientation, and scaling: review these when content is clipped at an edge or wide content does not fit.

Escalate with a reproducible sample
If the problem persists, send the clipper vendor the shortest sample that demonstrates it. Include the page URL if you can share it, the exact passage and script, the exported PDF, your browser and operating system, clipper name and version, PDF viewer, capture mode, and the steps that reproduce the failure.
If you use Joplin, its Web Clipper documentation describes a specific extension-to-desktop-service setup and browser-console debugging steps for Chrome and Firefox. For Joplin, check that the service started by the desktop app is running, and whether firewall or proxy rules interfere with communication. These checks apply to Joplin’s service and extension; they are not a general explanation for malformed PDF glyphs.
