Playwright is a sensible first tool to evaluate if you are starting a browser-automation project and want one framework for testing and scripted web tasks across Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. It combines browser support with a test runner, auto-waiting, assertions, tracing, and parallel execution. That makes it a practical default to investigate—not a proven fastest or universally best choice.

Choose based on the browsers you must cover, your team’s language and existing infrastructure, and whether you need a testing framework or flexible browser control. Selenium, Puppeteer, and Cypress each fit different requirements.

Which browser automation tool should you choose?

Start with the requirement that would be hardest to compromise on: target browser, language, test workflow, or existing infrastructure. The tools below are frameworks for controlling browsers; they are not interchangeable, and their official documentation does not establish a neutral performance ranking. The support and status notes here reflect documentation checked on October 3, 2026; browser support and experimental features can change.

Tool Best fit What to weigh
Playwright Cross-browser tests, scripts, and agent-driven workflows; TypeScript, Python, .NET, and Java bindings. Integrated test runner, auto-waiting, assertions, tracing, isolation, and parallelism. Its WebKit is not branded Safari, and behavior can vary by platform.
Selenium WebDriver-based automation where interoperability, existing expertise, or distributed execution matters. Language-specific bindings, browser implementations, Selenium Grid, and IDE record-and-playback support. It also covers web administration tasks, not only tests.
Puppeteer JavaScript browser control when Chrome or Firefox meets the target. Supports scripting and UI testing, form and keyboard interaction, screenshots, PDFs, performance traces, extension testing, and SPA prerendering. Its documented browser set does not include WebKit.
Cypress Browser testing in a test-focused workflow. Its current browser documentation describes Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and WebKit options, but WebKit is experimental, relies on Playwright WebKit, and has known limitations. Electron is deprecated as a test browser and is slated for removal in a future version.

These are choices among browser automation frameworks, not a ranking based on measured speed. Evaluate your own application, CI environment, and debugging needs before standardizing.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How do their browser and language support compare?

Browser targets

List the exact browser behavior your users depend on. Chromium coverage alone may be sufficient for some projects; others need Firefox, WebKit, or a branded browser such as Chrome, Edge, or Safari. Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit support and can run branded Chrome and Edge. Its WebKit is not branded Safari, so it should not be treated as identical to testing on Safari. Puppeteer documents Chrome and Firefox. Cypress describes WebKit as an experimental option rather than an established production Safari-coverage answer. Selenium’s WebDriver implementations target major browsers.

Languages and runtimes

Playwright documents bindings for TypeScript, Python, .NET, and Java. Puppeteer is a JavaScript library. Selenium offers language-specific bindings. For Cypress, check its current documentation against your team’s runtime and CI requirements before choosing. A framework that fits your existing test code and build pipeline can be easier to maintain than one selected solely from a feature list.

Which tool fits testing, scripting, or web administration?

For a test suite with integrated tooling

Playwright is a strong candidate when you want browser control and test-runner capabilities together. Its documented features include auto-waiting, web-first assertions, test isolation, traces, and parallelism. Cypress is another test-focused option; verify its current browser support and known limitations if WebKit coverage is important.

For browser control outside a test runner

Puppeteer provides JavaScript browser-control APIs for tasks such as form submission, keyboard input, screenshots, PDFs, traces, and SPA prerendering. Selenium also reaches beyond test suites: its project explicitly describes automating routine web administration alongside testing.

For AI-agent browser workflows

Playwright documents workflows for scripting and AI agents, in addition to its testing use cases. Decide whether the agent needs to interact with live pages or simply receive a rendered screenshot. Those are different jobs: a screenshot endpoint can return an image or PDF, but it does not replace a framework that must navigate, assert, and interact with a test application.

What matters for reliability and debugging?

Prefer behavior you can diagnose over a bare claim that a tool is reliable. Check what happens when a page is slow, an element is not ready, a test fails intermittently, or a run needs to be reproduced.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Waiting and assertions: Playwright documents auto-waiting and web-first assertions. Puppeteer locator actions automatically wait for element presence and readiness. These features can reduce timing-related errors, but they do not remove the need to model application state correctly.
  • Isolation and evidence: Playwright documents test isolation and tracing. Traces and other failure artifacts help explain what a run did; ensure your team knows how to capture and inspect them in its CI workflow.
  • Parallel work: Playwright documents parallel execution and sharding. Selenium Grid is intended to distribute runs across multiple machines. These are distinct scaling approaches; assess runner setup and maintenance alongside the feature itself.
  • Existing infrastructure: If a team already operates Selenium infrastructure or has deep WebDriver expertise, migration has a real cost. Compare the benefit of a new framework with the effort of rewriting, training, and maintaining the new runner.

A practical selection process

  1. Write down the browser matrix. Name the required engines and whether you need branded Chrome, Edge, or Safari behavior. Do not count Playwright WebKit as branded Safari coverage.
  2. Choose the team’s natural language and runtime. Confirm bindings, CI compatibility, and how the framework fits current test code.
  3. Separate interaction from testing. Decide whether you need a full test workflow with assertions and debugging artifacts, a browser-control library for standalone tasks, or WebDriver interoperability.
  4. Trial a representative workflow. Include a slow page, a stateful interaction, a meaningful assertion, and a failure that the team must diagnose. Compare maintainability and failure evidence, not just whether a simple demo runs.
  5. Validate scaling and browser limits. Check how your chosen approach handles parallel runs or distributed machines, and recheck experimental browser support before relying on it.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a browser test framework. Consider it when the task is to capture a page as an image or PDF rather than drive an end-to-end test. It can complement a browser automation stack; it is not a substitute for test assertions, application interaction, or browser-matrix validation.

A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe:

Common selection mistakes

  • Assuming WebKit means Safari: Playwright’s WebKit is not branded Safari; Cypress describes its WebKit support as experimental and documents limitations. Confirm the exact environment required by your users.
  • Choosing by an unsupported speed ranking: Comparable independent performance figures are not established here. Run a representative trial in your own environment instead.
  • Treating screenshots as browser tests: A rendered capture is useful for visual records and page inspection, but it does not by itself verify application behavior through assertions and interactions.
  • Ignoring a deprecation or experimental label: Check current browser documentation before putting Cypress WebKit or Electron into a critical test matrix.
