You can reuse a YouTube stream key, but the documented YouTube setup does not establish that VLC can reliably send a playlist to YouTube over RTMPS or keep the broadcast continuous between playlist items. Set up the stream and key in YouTube Studio, then test the exact VLC version and playlist before relying on it for a live event. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented; the complete VLC-to-YouTube playlist recipe is not.
What a static YouTube stream key does—and does not do
YouTube calls the stream key a password-like credential that helps YouTube accept an encoder feed. The encoder also needs the server URL shown in Live Control Room. A reusable key saves you from creating or entering a different key for each session, but it does not make a stream public, schedule a broadcast, or guarantee that VLC will connect. YouTube documents privacy and scheduling as separate stream settings. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live stream settings.
VLC’s documentation describes Stream Output, or “sout,” as a processing pipeline that can take media VLC reads, transcode it, and send it over a network. It documents components such as std for network output and transcode for re-encoding. That explains the general idea, not a verified YouTube RTMPS playlist configuration. The documentation’s HTTP example is not a YouTube recipe. See VideoLAN’s Stream Output introduction and its transcode-and-stream example.
Set up the YouTube stream and reusable key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. For a broadcast you want to start immediately, use the Stream tab. To prepare an event for later, use Manage and schedule a stream. A scheduled event can have a watch page and reminders.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Use the values displayed in Live Control Room. Do not share the real key in a public article, screenshot, shared command, or log.
- Select or create a custom stream key. In the stream-key selector, choose a key you can reuse or create a custom one. YouTube says previous stream settings, including the key, can be reused. If a key is disclosed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder; resetting requires channel-owner or manager access.
- Use the RTMPS URL when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted ingest option. The URL initially displayed may be ordinary RTMP; use the lock icon in Stream settings to reveal and copy the RTMPS URL. Do not assume that an RTMP URL and an RTMPS URL are interchangeable in VLC.
- Configure the encoder and check the preview. YouTube’s instruction is to enter the server URL and stream key into the encoder. Start the encoder; for a scheduled event, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop sending content and use End Stream as applicable to the scheduled workflow. Check that the event is no longer live.
These steps establish the YouTube side of the workflow. They do not prove that a particular VLC version, interface profile, or command line can complete the connection, use the current RTMPS endpoint, or move between playlist entries without an interruption. Test those details with the exact VLC build and files you plan to use.

Choose encoder settings for the feed
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, the table recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; the corresponding listed minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not measured performance guarantees. Check the full encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for your chosen output.
Use settings that fit the actual files and your available upload capacity. VLC may need to transcode media to produce a consistent output, but transcoding is not automatically required or established as a fix for every playlist. VLC’s documented output components are concepts, not confirmation that a given build supports YouTube’s codec, mux, and RTMPS combination. Do not copy an HTTP example and assume changing the destination makes it a working YouTube configuration.

Test the playlist before relying on it
- Test the actual playlist, not just one representative file. Check that each item has usable audio and video and that transitions behave as required.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting a scheduled broadcast. Confirm the correct stream, picture, and audio are arriving.
- Monitor stream health and quality during the test and event. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring before and during a broadcast.
- Verify that viewers can reach the event at the intended time and that its privacy and schedule settings are correct.
- Confirm whether playback between playlist items leaves a gap or interrupts the encoder feed. The reviewed VLC documentation does not establish continuous YouTube delivery across playlist transitions.
Troubleshoot connection and playback failures

| YouTube does not receive a feed | Confirm the server URL and key were copied from the intended Live Control Room stream. Check that the URL scheme and server match: use the RTMPS URL only when the VLC configuration supports it. Do not assume RTMP and RTMPS are interchangeable. |
