There is no verified universal CPU, RAM, disk, or instance-size minimum for one 1080p YouTube loop relayed through NGINX RTMP. The main sizing question is whether your server only relays an already encoded stream or also transcodes it with FFmpeg. For YouTube, plan the outgoing stream around its encoder recommendations—5 Mbps H.264 at 1080p30 or 12 Mbps H.264 at 1080p60—and validate the whole route with a real end-to-end test.
Start with the workload, not a server-size guess
“1080p” describes the video resolution, not the amount of work the host must do. A server relaying an encoded feed has a different job from one converting resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, or keyframe timing. Recording the stream or packaging it for HLS/DASH adds further work.
The NGINX RTMP module project documentation describes relay, push/pull, FFmpeg transcoding, and HLS/DASH functions. It does not publish a minimum hardware specification for a single 1080p YouTube loop. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies the stream sent to YouTube, not the CPU or memory needed by the relay host.
Relay an already compatible stream
With relay-only, NGINX forwards the encoded feed rather than encoding each frame. That avoids video-encoding work on the relay host, but does not make host selection irrelevant: sustained network capacity, a stable route to YouTube, module and protocol compatibility, and reliable process supervision still matter.

Transcode with FFmpeg
If the source does not meet the desired YouTube output settings, FFmpeg can transform and republish it. Encoding capacity depends on the target codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder (software or hardware), preset or quality target, source complexity, and number of simultaneous outputs. There is no source-backed CPU figure that applies to all of those combinations; benchmark the exact command and settings you intend to run.
Add recording or viewer delivery separately
Local recording requires storage sized for your retention needs. HLS/DASH packaging and serving viewers introduce output and audience-delivery demands in addition to pushing a feed to YouTube. Do not treat the requirements for those roles as part of a relay-only estimate.

Set the YouTube output for the target frame rate
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives the following H.264 recommendations. The bitrate is for video; account separately for audio, protocol overhead, variation, and other network traffic.
| YouTube output | H.264 video bitrate | Other relevant guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum | CBR; keyframe interval recommended at 2 seconds and no more than 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum | CBR; keyframe interval recommended at 2 seconds and no more than 4 seconds |
Do not use those H.264 numbers as universal bitrate settings for another codec. YouTube lists separate AV1/H.265 recommendations: 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. The guidance also lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1, and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.

For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its guidance specifies 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio, with 44.1 kHz stereo and 48 kHz 5.1 sample rates. Include audio when estimating the stream’s total upload demand.
These are ingest recommendations, not a complete bandwidth specification for your server. Allow headroom above the encoded video-plus-audio rate for overhead, bitrate variation, other traffic, and reconnect behavior. Test sustained upload on the actual route; YouTube recommends running a speed test and testing before a stream, then monitoring stream health.

Choose a compatible NGINX RTMP installation
Do not assume a stock NGINX installation includes RTMP support. The arut nginx-rtmp-module project documents building its module with NGINX. Separately, NGINX’s official RTMP documentation describes a dynamic RTMP media-streaming module and package installation for NGINX Plus; its technical specifications identify RTMP/DASH streaming as provided by a third-party RTMP module.
Those are different installation paths. Before provisioning a host, confirm the exact NGINX distribution and version, operating-system support, module build or package availability, and whether that build supports the RTMPS connection you plan to use. NGINX Plus package instructions should not be assumed to apply to every open-source NGINX distribution. The RTMP module’s worker-pushing behavior can support multi-worker live streaming, but adding workers does not remove an encoder bottleneck or fix inadequate upstream capacity.

Size and validate the host in five steps
- Inspect the loop source. Establish its codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval. Compare those properties with the YouTube output you need. Decide whether the source can be relayed as-is or must be transcoded.
- For relay-only, test the real feed. Configure the relay path and measure host CPU, memory, and network throughput while the actual source is running. Watch for dropped frames and disconnect/reconnect behavior. Do not infer a minimum vCPU or RAM count from resolution alone.
- For transcoding, benchmark the exact encode. Use the intended FFmpeg command, encoder, preset, output settings, and source. Include every concurrent stream in the test; one stream’s result is not a capacity guarantee for several.
- Account for extra roles. If you enable recording, decide how much footage to retain and size storage accordingly. If you package or serve HLS/DASH, assess its segment handling, output bandwidth, and audience load separately from the YouTube push.
- Run an end-to-end test and monitor both ends. Check the host and YouTube stream health under the real output settings and route. YouTube advises pre-stream testing and health monitoring. No fixed 24/7 soak-test duration is specified in the cited platform guidance, so choose a test duration appropriate to your operational risk rather than presenting one as a YouTube requirement.
Troubleshoot common 1080p loop problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the picture breaks up | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or the output settings do not match the intended stream. | Check the actual outgoing bitrate, frame rate, and codec; test sustained upload on the production route; allow headroom for audio, overhead, and competing traffic. |
| Relay works, but the host becomes heavily loaded after conversion is enabled | FFmpeg is encoding, and the chosen codec, preset, frame rate, resolution, or concurrent output count exceeds the tested capacity. | Benchmark the exact encode workload. If the source already matches the needed output, consider relaying it rather than transcoding it. |
| NGINX starts, but the RTMP application or directives are unavailable | The installed NGINX build may not include the RTMP module, or the module may not match the distribution/build. | Verify which module installation path you used, its compatibility with the NGINX build and operating system, and that the module is loaded as required by that path. |
| The relay cannot establish or maintain the YouTube connection | The ingest address, stream setup, network path, or RTMPS support may be wrong or incompatible. | Use the ingest address and stream name/key shown in YouTube’s stream setup, confirm the selected module build supports the intended RTMPS path, and check network reachability. Never publish or share the private stream key. |
| A multi-worker setup still cannot sustain the output | Worker coordination does not solve an encoding bottleneck or inadequate upstream bandwidth. | Measure CPU during any FFmpeg work and measure sustained network throughput separately; address the limiting resource rather than only increasing worker count. |
