Inspect test automation changes as carefully as production code: check their design and behavior, then ask whether the tests would actually reveal the defects they are meant to catch. Pair that human review with relevant test runs and presubmit checks; a green run alone does not prove the tests are effective.
What a code inspection should cover
A code inspection is a peer examination of a proposed change by someone other than its author. For test automation, the work product can include test cases, frameworks, fixtures, helpers, configuration, scripts, and changes to CI integration. The goal is to assess both the quality of that code and whether it provides meaningful verification.
“Inspection” need not mean a heavyweight meeting for every change. ISTQB distinguishes informal reviews, walkthroughs, technical reviews, and inspections; the appropriate form depends on the objective, work product, risk, resources, and context. See the ISTQB review-process overview.
Choose a review approach that fits the change
Use the expected consequence of a defect and the scope of the change to decide how much review it needs. A small, low-risk test edit may need a focused peer review. A change to a shared framework, deployment strategy, or critical verification path may call for additional reviewers or a more structured technical review.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Consideration | How it affects the approach |
|---|---|
| Risk and impact | Higher consequences justify broader scrutiny and more relevant expertise. |
| Complexity and scope | Changes spanning frameworks, fixtures, CI, or reporting may need reviewers who understand each affected part. |
| Domain knowledge | Involve someone familiar with the application behavior, test architecture, or automation platform the change touches. |
| Time and reviewer availability | Keep the review focused on the change while ensuring reviewers have enough context to judge interactions. |
| Review objective | Choose a format suited to the goal: rapid feedback, defect detection, or shared understanding. |
ISTQB’s review guidance identifies objectives, project needs, resources, work product, risks, business domain, and culture as factors in selecting a review type. A process outline is available from ASTQB.
A practical inspection procedure
-
Clarify intent and scope
Ask the author to explain the intended behavior, why the change is needed, and which tests, framework pieces, or scripts have changed. Review the relevant diff, then inspect enough surrounding code to understand dependencies and existing conventions. Google’s code review guidance includes design, functionality, complexity, tests, naming, comments, style, and documentation among the areas to consider.
-
Check readiness and context
Confirm that the proposed change is understandable and that relevant test or presubmit results are available. Ask for missing context when the intent, expected behavior, or verification results are unclear. Google Cloud describes reviewing proposed changes for correctness and clarity with tests and presubmit results as context: Google Cloud’s approach to change.

-
Trace design and behavior
Determine whether the change belongs in the existing test architecture and whether it implements the stated intent. Follow relevant paths through setup, action, assertion, cleanup, and integration. Consider what happens when data, dependencies, timing, or the execution environment differ from the happy path; review guidance specifically calls out intended behavior and edge cases (Google: What to look for in a code review).

Review tests as maintained software
Check that names describe behavior, fixtures and setup are understandable, teardown leaves state isolated, and helpers are not harder to understand than the code they simplify. Ask whether the added complexity is justified. Google’s reviewer guidance says tests must be maintained and should not be allowed unnecessary complexity merely because they are not part of the main binary (Google: What to look for in a code review).
-
Challenge whether the tests can catch the defect
For each important assertion, ask what would happen if the behavior under test broke. Would the test fail? Could a later code change make it pass for the wrong reason? Is the assertion simple and tied to the intended behavior? A successful run demonstrates that the tests executed under those conditions; it does not by itself establish that they would detect the target defect.

Check automation integration where relevant
If the change touches broader automation, inspect its fit with the architecture, deployment strategy, CI/CD pipeline, reporting, and verification of the automation solution or infrastructure. These topics are within the scope of the ISTQB CTAL-TAE v2.0 test automation engineering syllabus.
-
Give actionable findings and close the review
Describe the issue, its likely consequence, and what change would address it. Distinguish required corrections from suggestions, resolve discussion, and verify that agreed fixes are made. The review-process activities described by ASTQB include planning, initiation, individual review, communication and analysis, fixing, and reporting.

Reviewer checklist
- Is the purpose clear, and does the design fit the existing test system?
- Does the change behave as intended, including relevant edge cases?
- Are test names, fixtures, setup, cleanup, helpers, and assertions understandable and maintainable?
- Would the tests fail if the behavior broke, and could they pass falsely after later changes?
- Is the added complexity necessary?
- Are naming, comments, style, and documentation consistent with project guidance?
- Where applicable, does the change fit the automation architecture, CI/CD integration, reporting, and verification needs?
- Are findings tracked through fixes and completion?
What code inspection can—and cannot—establish
Review can surface visible logic, design, and maintainability problems. It complements execution and automated checks; it does not replace them. Google’s reviewer guidance and Google Cloud’s change guidance discuss review alongside testing or presubmit results (Google; Google Cloud).

Frequently Asked Questions
Should every test automation change get a formal inspection meeting?
No. Choose the review format according to the change’s objective, risk, scope, and available expertise; a focused peer review is appropriate for many changes.
Does a passing automation run prove the tests are effective?
No. Review whether the tests would fail when the intended behavior breaks and whether changes could cause false positives.
