Open FireShot’s settings or Customize screen, find Image format, and choose PNG or JPEG if that option appears in your version. Make a test capture to check the result. If there is no persistent format setting, choose the format from the editor’s Save dialog instead; hold Shift when invoking Save if the dialog has been suppressed.
Set the image format in FireShot settings
- Open the FireShot extension in your browser and go to its settings or Customize screen.
- Look for Image format and select PNG or JPEG, if your installed version offers the setting. FireShot’s current onboarding page shows these two choices: FireShot’s getting-started page.
- Capture a page, then check the saved file’s extension and open it to confirm the format and appearance.
FireShot’s interfaces differ across browsers and releases, and the available information does not establish one identical menu path or setting behavior for every version. Check the settings in your installed extension rather than assuming that instructions for another browser or release apply.
Choose a format in the Save dialog
If your version has no persistent Image format preference, open the capture in FireShot’s editor and select Save. FireShot’s Pro manual documents a save dialog with PDF, PNG, JPG, GIF, and BMP choices. Its format options can vary by browser, version, and edition; the current Chrome listing emphasizes PDF, PNG, and JPEG, while the manual describes a broader set of formats.
If the Save dialog was configured not to appear automatically, hold Shift while invoking Save or the capture command to bring it up, as described in the FireShot Pro manual and FireShot support guidance. In the dialog, select the format for that save. The manual also describes a JPEG compression-quality option for JPG.

Do not confuse disk saves with drag-and-drop format
Editor Options → Saving → Setup file format to drag & drop controls the format used when you drag a capture from the editor into another application. It does not set the format for a file saved to disk. For a disk file, use Save and choose the format in its dialog, or use the Image format preference if your version provides one. FireShot explains this distinction in its support article.
Which format should you choose?
Choose based on what you need to do with the capture, rather than assuming one format is universally best. PNG and JPEG are the image choices shown in FireShot’s current onboarding material; the Pro manual’s Save dialog also documents document and additional image formats. The available sources do not establish comparative file sizes or image-quality results for these choices.

Troubleshooting
There is no Image format setting
Your installed browser version or FireShot release may not expose the persistent PNG/JPEG preference shown in current onboarding material. Open a capture in the editor and use Save to choose from the formats offered there.
FireShot keeps saving as PNG
Check whether you changed the drag-and-drop setting rather than the disk-save behavior. For disk saves, use the editor’s Save action. If the format dialog is hidden, hold Shift while invoking Save or the capture command to reveal it.

You need PDF as the persistent default
The current onboarding material establishes PNG and JPEG choices, not a persistent PDF default. Check your installed version’s settings and Save dialog for PDF availability; older reports about particular releases do not establish that the current interface supports a persistent PDF preference.
The saved file has the wrong extension or will not open as expected
Make a fresh test capture and inspect the format selected in the Save dialog, not only the filename. If you use an Image format preference, confirm that it applies to the capture action you ran. FireShot’s current material does not establish identical behavior for every capture workflow and browser release.

If you need screenshots through an API instead of changing FireShot’s browser preference, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. Its capture process accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before taking the shot; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents.
Example cURL request (save as WebP):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
