Use GStreamer’s textoverlay element for ticker text and either cairooverlay or GStreamer’s video overlay-composition API for a logo. For unchanging ticker wording, set textoverlay’s text property; for wording that updates, feed timestamped text buffers to its text pad. There is no universal, reliable launch command for every 24/7 setup: the right pipeline depends on your source, operating system, installed plugins, encoder, and transport.
Choose how the ticker text will work
First decide whether the ticker is actually static. A fixed label that never changes and a ticker updated on a schedule or from incoming data use different textoverlay inputs.
| Need | GStreamer path | What you must provide |
|---|---|---|
| Text stays the same | textoverlay text property |
The string and its visual settings, such as alignment and font. |
| Text changes over time | Timestamped buffers on textoverlay’s text sink pad |
A producer that generates updated wording and timestamps. |
Fixed ticker text
GStreamer documents a simple example: textoverlay text="Room A" valignment=top halignment=left font-desc="Sans, 72". This is an illustration, not a production sizing recommendation. Set alignment, font, and placement for your output dimensions and keep important content within a safe area. Text wrapping is enabled by default.
Changing ticker text
Connect a text source to the element’s text sink pad and send buffers with timestamps. textoverlay matches the text to video using those timestamps. The overlay element does not fetch a news feed, schedule updates, or generate changing messages itself; your application must do that work.

Choose a logo overlay path
There are two documented approaches. Neither is universally preferable: choose based on how your application handles logo pixels, video formats, and downstream rendering.
| Approach | How it works | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
cairooverlay |
Your application draws the logo using Cairo through the element’s draw signal. | The draw callback receives a Cairo context and the current buffer timestamp and duration. Use the caps-changed signal to learn frame dimensions, and ensure compatible raw-video formats are negotiated around the element. |
| Video overlay composition | Represent the logo as one or more overlay rectangles. They can be blended into raw video or attached as metadata for a capable sink to render. | Whether metadata is rendered depends on downstream sink support; blending into raw video is another path. |
If your application already owns image pixels and a rendering path, composition rectangles may fit naturally. If it needs to draw through application code, cairooverlay provides that callback. In either case, test the actual negotiated formats and rendered output.

Build and validate the complete pipeline
The overlay elements describe how to add graphics, but the topic alone does not identify a source, operating system, GStreamer build, available plugins, codec, encoder, muxing, or transport. Those choices determine a valid end-to-end launch line, so a single command presented as universal would be unreliable.
- Identify the source and environment. Record whether the stream begins with a file, generated video, or another source, and note the operating system, GStreamer version/build, and installed plugins.
- Select the video and audio path. Choose compatible elements and formats for the source, overlay, encoder, muxer, and transport. For a Cairo path, account for the raw-video formats accepted around
cairooverlay. - Add the text overlay. Set the fixed
textproperty, or connect your timestamped text-buffer producer if wording changes. - Add the logo path. Implement the
cairooverlaydrawing callback or prepare overlay-composition rectangles and confirm that the downstream path blends or renders them. - Configure the encoder for YouTube. Use the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate as a coordinated configuration that fits your available upload connection. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds; it recommends RTMPS for secure transport.
- Test the configured output. Check the image, ticker timing, audio, stream health, and recovery behavior in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it continuously. YouTube advises testing before a stream and monitoring stream health.
Connect GStreamer to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream.
- Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration for your GStreamer output.
- Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send content to the stream.
- Start sending content from the encoder and verify the incoming signal and stream health in Live Control Room.
YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that activation time before a planned broadcast.

Plan for continuous operation and archives
A 24/7 channel needs more than a working overlay pipeline: the source, encoder process, network connection, and monitoring must remain available. Plan process supervision, source recovery, network recovery, alerting, and any stream segmentation as separate operational work; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not promise an uninterrupted service design.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish what happens to a longer continuous event, so do not assume a single 24/7 stream will be archived in full. Check current platform behavior and plan segmentation if a complete archive matters.

Troubleshooting
- Text appears in the wrong place or is hard to read: Adjust
valignment, halignment, andfont-descfor the actual output dimensions and safe area. The documented font size is only an example. - Changing ticker text arrives at the wrong time: Check that the producer sends timestamped buffers to the text sink pad and that their timing matches the video. The element synchronizes using timestamps.
- The logo is missing or the pipeline will not negotiate formats: Check compatible raw-video formats around
cairooverlay. For composition metadata, verify that the downstream sink supports rendering it, or use a path that blends the overlay into raw video. - YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm that the encoder uses the selected YouTube server URL and stream key, that live streaming is enabled for the channel, and that the configured codec and connection are working. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Stream health is poor or unstable: Review the coordinated resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and available upload connection. Check the recommended CBR mode, 2-second keyframes (not over 4 seconds), and RTMPS transport, then test and monitor in Live Control Room.
- The stream stops during a 24/7 run: Investigate source availability, process supervision, and network recovery; the overlay elements do not provide a complete continuous-operation system.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a GStreamer computer and connection running at home, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded content from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streaming only. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
