Add visual testing by capturing named screenshots at important, reproducible points in your Selenium tests, comparing them with approved baselines, and reviewing each change before accepting it. Selenium still verifies behavior; visual checks help catch unexpected changes in layout, styling, typography, and other rendered details.
What visual testing adds to a Selenium suite
A functional assertion can confirm that a button is present or that a form submits successfully. It does not necessarily detect that the button shifted, text wrapped differently, or a page lost a visible element. A visual checkpoint records the rendered screen and compares it with a previously accepted image. As Applitools puts it, “Visual testing is a type of regression testing that ensures previously correct screens have not changed unexpectedly.”
A visual difference is a review signal, not a diagnosis: it may represent an intentional design update, a rendering difference, or a regression. Keep functional assertions for behavior and use visual comparisons for selected screens that matter to users.
Choose useful visual checkpoints
Capture a meaningful, reproducible UI state rather than taking a screenshot after every interaction. Good initial candidates include:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- A key page after its relevant content has loaded.
- An important form in its empty, validation-error, or completed state.
- A success or error message that must remain visible and correctly placed.
- A representative narrow or responsive layout.
Give each checkpoint a name that identifies the page and state, such as Checkout - validation error. Named snapshots make review easier when a test has several captures.
Stabilize the page before capturing it
Visual comparisons are useful only when the test reaches the intended state consistently. Before adding checkpoints broadly, make the page predictable:
- Wait for the specific content or state under test instead of relying only on an arbitrary pause.
- Use repeatable test data and a consistent starting state.
- Where your capture tool supports it, suppress animations or mask regions that are expected to change, such as timestamps or rotating content.
- Run the same checkpoint more than once and investigate noisy differences before expanding coverage.
These are reliability practices, not a universal Selenium or Percy API: the exact wait, animation, and masking controls depend on the application and integration you choose.

Add Percy checkpoints to Selenium
BrowserStack documents Selenium integrations for Percy. The test reaches the desired UI state, then calls the Percy snapshot function with the driver and a descriptive name. Check the current official setup guide for the language you use, including current dependencies and build commands; package versions and SDK details can change.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePython example
After configuring the Percy CLI and installing the percy-selenium integration as described in BrowserStack’s current guide, place a named snapshot after the test has reached its target state:
from percy import percy_snapshot
# browser is the Selenium WebDriver, already on the intended page/state.
percy_snapshot(browser, "Empty Todo State")
For example, put the call after navigation and after the page’s relevant content is ready—not immediately after starting the browser. Use the current guide for the supported import, installation, and Percy build invocation for your project.

Java example
Configure Percy and the project name using BrowserStack’s current Java setup instructions, then add a checkpoint at the desired state:
// driver is the Selenium WebDriver, already on the intended page/state.
PercySDK.screenshot(driver, "Checkout - validation error");
The integration guide includes a Maven dependency example; use its live version and configuration rather than copying an old dependency version into an evergreen test suite.
Establish and review baselines
- Run the initial build deliberately. The first saved snapshot becomes a candidate reference; by itself it cannot tell you whether an existing visual defect is a regression.
- Review the initial screens. Confirm that each captured state is the intended one before treating its image as approved.
- Run the test again after changes. Compare the new snapshots with the approved baselines and inspect highlighted differences.
- Choose a disposition for each meaningful change. Accept a baseline update when the UI change is intentional. If the change is unexpected, leave the old baseline in place, fix the UI, and rerun.
Percy documents a workflow for comparing new snapshots with approved baselines and reviewing changes. Avoid approving an entire build without inspecting its meaningful differences.

Expand browser and viewport coverage gradually
Start with a small set of important states in one browser. Once captures are stable, add browsers and widths that reflect your users and product. More environments can reveal browser-specific rendering, but can also produce expected differences: Percy notes that system fonts, form controls, and scrollbars may vary by operating system. Each browser snapshot also counts toward screenshot usage, so expand intentionally rather than multiplying environments without a coverage reason.
Hosted service or self-managed comparisons?
| Approach | What your Selenium test does | What your team must manage |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted service such as Percy | Calls an SDK at named checkpoints. | The service provides build comparison and review workflows; verify current SDK behavior and plan limits in its documentation. |
| Self-managed screenshot comparison | Saves screenshots at chosen checkpoints. | Your team chooses image storage, comparison and diff presentation, noise control, and a baseline approval process. The available documentation does not establish a complete self-hosted implementation recipe. |
This is a qualitative distinction, not a claim that one approach is universally better. Applitools documentation describes the checkpoint-and-baseline model, but the available setup information here does not establish a detailed current Selenium configuration for it.
Troubleshoot noisy or misleading visual changes
- The same test produces different diffs on repeat runs: check for data that changes between runs, content that has not finished loading, or animation. Wait for the relevant state and make inputs repeatable before approving images.
- A diff appears only on one operating system or browser: inspect environment-specific rendering such as fonts, native form controls, and scrollbars. Decide whether that environment is a supported target and whether its baseline should be separate.
- The screenshot shows the wrong page state: move the checkpoint after the Selenium navigation and interactions that establish the intended state, and wait for the relevant content.
- A large set of snapshots changes after a design update: review the affected states and approve only expected changes. Keep unexpected changes unapproved while correcting the UI.
- The SDK call or build command no longer works: consult the current Percy guide for your language and align the project’s dependencies and invocation with its supported setup.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-off screenshot or a capture outside your Selenium baseline workflow, ScreenshotNeo can return an image with one request. It is a screenshot API, not a visual-baseline review system, so it does not replace comparing and approving snapshots in your testing workflow. Its capture process accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a visual diff mean my Selenium test failed?
Not by itself. It means the rendered image changed; review the difference to determine whether it is intentional or a regression.
Should I capture every Selenium step?
No. Choose a small set of meaningful screen states that provide useful regression coverage and can be reproduced consistently.
Can ScreenshotNeo replace Percy baselines?
No. ScreenshotNeo returns screenshots; Percy provides the documented baseline comparison and review workflow described here.
