If you click Download in Firefox Screenshots, Firefox saves a PNG to its configured download folder. Find it in the browser’s Downloads panel, or check Settings > General > Files and Applications > Downloads to see which folder Firefox uses. If you clicked Copy instead, the image is on your clipboard and no file was saved.
Find a screenshot you downloaded
- Open Firefox’s Downloads panel and look for the most recent screenshot.
- Look for a PNG with a name similar to
Screenshot year-month-day at hour-minute-second Page title.png. - If you need the folder on your computer, open Settings > General > Files and Applications > Downloads. The selected folder is Firefox’s default download location.
Mozilla’s help article describes downloaded Firefox Screenshots as going to the browser’s default download location. Starting with Firefox 141, moderator Nathan Giovannini wrote in a July 24, 2025, Mozilla Support reply that screenshots are saved to the folder set as the default download location. Check your own Downloads panel and setting, especially if your browser is customized or managed; one user in the same discussion reported a different destination than expected. Download
Download saves a PNG file. Look in Firefox’s Downloads panel first, then use the Downloads setting to identify the folder.
Copy
Copy puts the screenshot on your clipboard; it does not save a file in the downloads folder. Paste it into an image editor, document, or other application that accepts images. If you never downloaded it, there may be no screenshot file to locate.

Choose where Firefox saves the next screenshot
To select a destination for each download, open Settings > General > Files and Applications > Downloads and enable Always ask you where to save files. Mozilla Support moderator guidance says this applies to screenshots from Firefox 141 onward. As behavior can differ with customized or managed setups, verify where a test screenshot is saved.

Advanced: set a separate screenshot folder
A Mozilla Support forum solution describes using the about:config preferences browser.screenshots.folderList and browser.screenshots.dir to configure a separate folder. This is an advanced route described by a support volunteer, not the standard Downloads setting. The forum cautions that such back-door preferences are not fully supported and may not persist, so use the normal download setting when it meets your needs. Mozilla Support discussion.
Troubleshoot a missing Firefox screenshot
- Nothing appears in Downloads: Check whether you clicked Copy rather than Download. Try pasting into an application.
- You downloaded it but cannot find it: Look for the recent PNG in Firefox’s Downloads panel, then check the folder shown under Settings > General > Files and Applications > Downloads.
- You expected Firefox to ask for a folder: Turn on Always ask you where to save files in the Downloads settings, then check the result of the next save.
- The file is in an unexpected folder: Confirm the selected download folder and check Firefox’s Downloads panel rather than relying on an assumed location. Customized or managed setups may not behave as expected.
