There is no single safe timestamp reset that fixes every GStreamer loop error. First identify which timestamp regresses and where: log PTS, DTS, duration, buffer flags, and the active segment at the end of one pass and start of the next. Then make the loop’s segment and event lifecycle coherent before changing encoder settings. YouTube’s ingest recommendations can help validate a finished stream, but they do not repair a broken local timeline.
What the timestamp warning means
PTS (presentation timestamp) tells a downstream element when media should be presented; DTS (decode timestamp) concerns when compressed data must be decoded. They are not interchangeable. GStreamer describes DTS as usually monotonic, while PTS is not necessarily monotonic in every stream. A warning about decreasing DTS therefore calls for a different investigation than a sequence of PTS values that merely reflects reordered video frames. Check the exact timestamp named in the warning rather than assuming both must rise together. GStreamer’s GstBuffer reference documents timestamps and buffer flags.
A file loop changes more than the file position. GStreamer maps buffer timestamps to running time using the active SEGMENT event. If a new pass resets media timestamps to zero but the output muxer expects a continuous timeline, the boundary may produce a regression, gap, or mismatch. Raw timestamp values alone do not establish whether audio and video remain synchronized; interpret them against the segment in force. GStreamer’s segment design documentation explains this mapping.
Collect evidence at the loop boundary
Before changing timestamps, capture the precise warning and establish where it originates. A decoder, parser, source, and final FLV/RTMP muxer can report different problems at different points in the graph.

- Record the complete warning or error, the element that prints it, the full pipeline string or graph, and the GStreamer version.
- Identify the file container and audio/video codecs, and whether the loop uses a segment seek, an EOS callback,
multifilesrc, concatenation, or a pipeline restart. - For both audio and video, record PTS, DTS, duration, flags, and active segment fields for buffers immediately before and after the boundary.
- Where possible, compare the demuxer or decoder output with the buffers entering the muxer. This shows whether the timestamp change originates upstream or is introduced later.
Look for GST_CLOCK_TIME_NONE, timestamps resetting to zero, a gap, duplicate values, or an actual DTS regression. Compare running time through the active segment rather than diagnosing from raw timestamps alone. GStreamer’s segment documentation describes the relationship between timestamps, segments, and running time.
Choose a loop strategy that fits the pipeline
| Loop approach | What happens | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Segment seek | The pipeline stays alive; a segment completes with SEGMENT_DONE, after which the application can issue another seek. |
All relevant streams participate coherently, and the demuxer, parser, decoder, and muxer handle the resulting segment and seek events. |
| Source or pipeline restart | The file source or some or all of the pipeline is restarted, potentially introducing a new stream lifecycle and media timestamps that begin again. | Inspect STREAM_START, SEGMENT, flush, and EOS behavior; establish a valid output timeline if the muxer expects continuity. |
For a continuous pipeline, try segment seeking
GStreamer provides a documented pattern for looped playback: seek with GST_SEEK_FLAG_SEGMENT, handle the resulting SEGMENT_DONE, then issue the next segment seek. This treats each pass as a segment rather than treating completion as ordinary end-of-stream. Consult the GStreamer seeking guide for seek behavior and implementation details. Seeking may require scanning when a file has no index, so the result and accuracy depend on the media and demuxer.

Confirm that audio and video take part in the loop consistently. A seek that updates one stream but leaves another on a different timeline can create drift even if one track’s timestamps look sensible. Also verify that every downstream element accepts the seek and new segment events; do not assume a loop pattern supported by one demuxer and muxer combination will work unchanged with another.
If restarting, inspect the event lifecycle
GStreamer documents a common stream order of STREAM_START, SEGMENT, buffers, and then EOS. EOS means no more data is expected for that stream. If an application sends buffers after EOS, or restarts only part of a pipeline without establishing the appropriate event state, changing timestamp numbers alone will not correct the lifecycle. Inspect which elements are torn down, flushed, or reused and what events reach the muxer. GStreamer’s event documentation describes these events.

If the restarted pass resets timestamps, the required remedy depends on which element owns the timestamps and what the muxer requires. Do not apply an arbitrary offset or force PTS to equal DTS without evidence from the observed buffers and the relevant element’s requirements.
Handle PTS and discontinuities carefully
Compressed video may reorder frames, so PTS and DTS can differ. GStreamer explicitly allows PTS not to be monotonic in every stream and describes DTS as usually monotonic. Diagnose the specific warning and timestamp involved; a non-increasing PTS sequence by itself does not prove the stream is corrupt.

GST_BUFFER_FLAG_DISCONT marks a data discontinuity, commonly after a seek or dropped buffer. It is a signal to downstream elements, not a timestamp repair: setting it alone does not make an invalid or decreasing muxer timeline valid. Use it when the stream has a real discontinuity, then check that the new segment, timestamp mapping, and downstream handling agree. See the GstBuffer reference.
Check YouTube settings after the local timeline
YouTube ingest settings are a separate validation step, not a diagnosis of a GStreamer loop boundary. Once local timestamps and synchronization are coherent, check the encoder configuration against YouTube’s current guidance and monitor the Live Control Room’s stream-health feedback.

Common symptoms and next checks
- “Non-monotonic DTS” appears at the muxer: Compare DTS at muxer input across the boundary, then trace backward to find the first element where it regresses. Check whether the new pass reset its timestamps or whether the segment/event sequence is incomplete.
- The warning names PTS, but DTS appears ordered: Inspect frame reordering and the exact element’s expectation. PTS need not be monotonic in every stream, so do not rewrite it until you know the downstream requirement.
- Audio and video drift after each loop: Compare both tracks’ running times using their active segments. Check whether both participate in the seek or restart, and whether one track has a gap or reset the other does not.
- A discontinuity flag is present, but the muxer still rejects buffers: Verify timestamp validity and the active segment. The flag communicates a discontinuity but does not replace a valid timeline.
- The first buffers after EOS are rejected: Check the event lifecycle and whether the pipeline is being reused after EOS without the appropriate restart, flush, stream-start, or segment handling.
- Seeking lands inaccurately or behaves inconsistently: Check whether the file is seekable and indexed. GStreamer notes that accurate seeking can require scanning files without indexes.
- The local pipeline is coherent but YouTube reports stream-health trouble: Review keyframe interval, supported codecs, CBR configuration, and representative test output separately from the loop diagnosis.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
