Does ScreenshotMachine have a command-line interface?
The official documentation describes an HTTP GET screenshot API and provides a Bash-and-curl example. ScreenshotMachine’s maintained Bash repository is likewise presented as an example for calling the API, rather than as a separately installed CLI application. In practice, the terminal workflow is to provide an account’s customer key, a target URL, and any capture settings, then write the response to a local file. You need Bash and curl; the service itself is hosted.
How to take and save a ScreenshotMachine screenshot
- Create or access a ScreenshotMachine account and retrieve the customer key described in the API documentation.
- Use the official Bash example as a starting point. Set the customer key and target URL, then choose the capture options you need. Keep the key and any secret phrase private; do not put real credentials in public code.
- Run the script in a Bash-compatible terminal. Its
curlrequest submits the API parameters and redirects the response tooutput.png. - For a request that should not use a cached capture, set
cacheLimit=0. This is the documented setting; it does not establish a guarantee about service-side behavior beyond the API’s stated cache option.
ScreenshotMachine’s example uses URL-encoded form data. URL-encode parameter values, especially CSS selectors containing reserved characters such as #; otherwise the request may not be interpreted as intended. The documented endpoint requires a customer key.

What output and capture options are documented?
The API documentation lists controls for image format, page coverage, viewport, device mode, timing, zoom, cache age, and selected page interactions. These settings let you request a particular capture; their availability does not by itself demonstrate that every site will render faithfully.

Why can a full-page screenshot need a longer delay?
A full-length capture may include images that load as the page scrolls, as well as animations. ScreenshotMachine advises allowing more time for such pages; its documentation gives delay=2000 or more as an example, not as a universal requirement. Increase the delay when the target page needs additional time to load, then adjust based on the page and your use case.
For ordinary captures, a shorter delay may be sufficient, but the documentation does not specify a single value that works for every site. Longer waits can make each request take longer, so avoid adding delay without a reason.

What are the practical limits and caveats?
- Dimensions: The documented width range is 100–1920 pixels and height range is 100–9999 pixels, with
fullavailable for page length. - Zoom: Although the documented range is 10–400%, zoom may be ignored when the screenshot is smaller than typical device dimensions.
- Delay: The documented range is 0–10,000 milliseconds in listed increments. A longer delay can help with image-heavy or animated full pages, but it also extends the wait.
- Cache: Cache age is specified from 0 to 14 days; use zero when you want to request a capture without using the documented cache option.
- Authentication: A customer key is required. For requests made from publicly available HTML pages, ScreenshotMachine recommends a secret phrase and corresponding hash. Its documentation says requests with a configured phrase but a missing or incorrect hash are ignored.
- Encoding: Encode request values, particularly selectors with reserved characters, so parameters reach the endpoint intact.
