Urlbox is the clearer choice if you want an official command-line client or a documented no-code recurring workflow. Its CLI sends render requests through Urlbox’s API, while its scheduling guide shows a separate Zapier workflow. Screenshot Machine documents an HTTP screenshot API, but the documentation reviewed does not establish a vendor-provided CLI or built-in scheduler; you can schedule its API calls with cron or another automation tool you operate.
Neither option is proven more reliable or produces better screenshots in a head-to-head test. Your choice depends on who owns the schedule, how you handle fresh versus cached captures, where you retain files, and what your actual workload costs.
How the two scheduled-screenshot workflows differ
| Need | Better-supported path | What you own |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor-provided terminal client | Urlbox | Invoke the CLI from your own scheduler or CI system; the CLI itself is not the recurring schedule. |
| Documented no-code recurring schedule | Urlbox with Zapier | Configure Zapier’s schedule trigger and any storage action. The documented schedule is an external integration. |
| Schedule an HTTP endpoint from code | Screenshot Machine is a plausible fit | Write and operate the cron job, CI workflow, or automation that calls its API. |
| Keep an ongoing visual archive | Either, with an explicit storage step | Download or store each capture durably; do not assume a cached response or temporary render link is a permanent archive. |
This is a documentation-based comparison, not a hands-on test. The available sources do not establish equivalent rendering quality, success rates, uptime under the same workload, or total cost for a particular schedule.
Does Screenshot Machine have a CLI or scheduler?
Screenshot Machine’s official documentation describes an HTTP GET screenshot API, parameters, and code examples. It does not establish a named vendor CLI or built-in scheduling function. To run captures on a schedule, you would arrange for your own cron job, CI workflow, or automation platform to make the API request.

The API exposes options including the target URL, dimensions, device, image format, cache age, delay, zoom, and interactions with page elements. Its documentation cautions that longer pages with late-loading images or animations may need a longer capture delay. Its cache setting can accept a cached result or request a fresh capture; for a recurring record of page changes, choose this behavior deliberately. A scheduled API call that accepts a still-valid cached result may not show the page as it looked at that run.
See the Screenshot Machine API documentation for the current request syntax and parameter details.
What Urlbox provides for CLI and scheduled captures
CLI: terminal access, not a scheduler
Urlbox’s official CLI makes render requests through its API. Its CLI guide documents headless and CI authentication using URLBOX_API_SECRET, output files, and asynchronous renders. The September 16, 2026 announcement describes terminal capture, PDF and video commands, and npm installation. These establish a vendor-provided command-line route, but do not mean that a recurring schedule is built into the CLI.

Recurring schedule: Zapier trigger plus Urlbox action
Urlbox’s scheduling guide, updated March 21, 2025, describes a Zapier Schedule trigger connected to a Urlbox screenshot action. It lists hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and specific-time/date schedules, with Google Drive as an example destination. The guide also describes connected storage options including Dropbox and Amazon S3.
This route relies on Urlbox plus an external scheduler/automation account. If you need a durable history, include a storage action rather than treating a temporary render URL as an archive. Urlbox’s scheduled screenshot guide gives the integration steps. Its API quickstart says a returned render URL expires after 30 days unless downloaded or saved to cloud storage.

How to schedule Screenshot Machine captures with cron
Because Screenshot Machine documents an HTTP API rather than a vendor scheduler, the scheduler and retention logic are yours to implement. The following is a minimal pattern: have cron invoke a script that calls the API, then save the returned image to a dated path. The exact API parameters and authentication format must follow the current Screenshot Machine API documentation; do not copy a guessed endpoint or credential scheme into production.
- Choose a cadence and output path. Decide whether each run must be fresh, select an image format and viewport, and make a dated filename or object key so later captures do not overwrite earlier ones.
- Write a request script. Use the documented endpoint and required credentials. Check the HTTP status and response content before treating a response as an image; save successful output to your archive.
- Schedule the script. Add it to cron, CI, or another scheduler. For cron, use the host’s local timezone rules intentionally; daylight-saving changes can alter local-time execution.
- Handle failures and retention. Log status, retry transient failures with limits, alert on repeated failures, and store images somewhere with the retention period you require.
- Verify the actual capture. Inspect representative pages, especially those with delayed images, animation, authentication, or consent banners. Tune delay and cache behavior against the intended use.
A schedule is not a guarantee that every page will load successfully at the scheduled time. Your integration needs to distinguish a transport/API error from a valid screenshot and decide whether to retry, alert, or keep the last known-good file.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose based on who should own the workflow
- Choose Urlbox when a vendor CLI or a documented no-code scheduled integration matters. The CLI handles terminal render requests; the described recurring workflow uses Zapier.
- Consider Screenshot Machine when you are comfortable owning the scheduler. Its documented API gives you a way to make scheduled requests, but the reviewed documentation does not establish a native CLI or scheduler.
- For either service, design the archive separately. A response cache or expiring render URL is not the same as a durable series of dated image files.
- Trial representative pages before committing. Compare actual output and usage for your pages, cadence, cache policy, and capture options. The available documentation does not support a general ranking of output quality or reliability.

ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first if you want a screenshot API with clean captures and billing that distinguishes clean shots from failed or unusable results. One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is available on every plan.
