If Hindi, Tamil, or other Indian-language text is missing or malformed in a ScreenshotMachine capture, first determine where the browser is running. Installing fonts on your computer can fix a local headless browser only when that browser uses the computer’s font environment; it will not install fonts on ScreenshotMachine’s hosted renderer. The official Screenshot Machine documentation describes an HTTP screenshot API, but does not document a local CLI, the service’s renderer or installed fonts, or an API option to upload fonts. Screenshot Machine’s API documentation therefore cannot confirm that any particular host-side font fix is available.
First identify what “ScreenshotMachine CLI” is capturing with
Before changing fonts, record the exact command, package or repository name, version, and where the command runs. Check whether it sends requests to api.screenshotmachine.com or starts a browser process on your own machine, container, or CI runner. The vendor documentation reviewed here describes a hosted HTTP GET API; it does not establish how an unspecified CLI works. The distinction matters because a local browser can use fonts installed in its runtime environment, while a hosted service controls its own renderer and font inventory.
- Local renderer: A command starts or drives a browser in your machine, container, or CI image. Fonts must be available in that environment.
- Hosted capture: The command sends a URL and options to Screenshot Machine’s API. Installing a package on your laptop does not install it on the service.
If you cannot tell which case applies, inspect the command’s help output and package documentation, or ask its maintainer. Do not assume that the word “CLI” means rendering is local.
Check whether the page or the font is the problem
Confirm the source text and browser result
Open the same URL in an ordinary browser, using the same account, cookies, and relevant session state. Verify that the text is present and displays correctly. If it is absent there too, investigate the page’s content or localization rather than the screenshot font environment. If it works in the browser but not in the capture, compare the capture environment and the page’s font loading.

Inspect the web-font request
A page may depend on a web font declared in its CSS. Check the browser’s network activity for failed, blocked, or late font requests. A screenshot taken before the font finishes loading can differ from the final page. This is distinct from whether the renderer has a suitable installed fallback font. Test missing-glyph boxes separately from incorrectly joined or reordered characters: missing coverage and text shaping are related but different failure modes.
Keep language selection separate from font availability
Screenshot Machine documents an accept-language option that “Sets the Accept-Language header on request to the web page you want to capture.” That header can affect which localized content a website serves; it does not install a font or guarantee correct glyph shaping. The API documentation also lists user-agent, cookies, capture delay, dimensions, selector, and crop controls. Use those for the request or capture behavior they address, not as font-installation controls.

For local rendering, install a font in the browser’s runtime environment
Indian languages use multiple scripts, so identify the language and script that fails before choosing a font package. Install it inside the exact machine, container, or CI image that runs the browser—not just on the computer used to author the page. Package names and defaults vary by distribution and can change; check the current repository and distribution documentation before running installation commands.
Distribution-specific examples
Fedora’s Indic documentation lists script-specific package examples. These are Fedora package names, not universal instructions for Debian, Ubuntu, or other distributions. Fedora’s change record says Noto became the default for Indic scripts in Fedora Linux 39; that dated change should not be generalized to every release or distribution.

Debian documentation points to the fonts-indic package family and describes configurable fontconfig search paths. Consult the current package repository and the image’s font configuration for the actual install procedure. If the distribution’s font tooling requires refreshing its cache, do so, then restart the browser process so it can discover the new fonts.
Retest with a small sample
- Use one short line of Unicode text in the affected script.
- Capture it in the local runtime after installing the relevant font package.
- Compare it with the same page in an ordinary browser and, if relevant, a hosted capture.
- If characters appear as boxes, check font coverage and whether the intended font loaded. If characters exist but their joining or order is wrong, investigate shaping support and the page’s font/rendering path rather than treating it as a simple missing-font problem.
For hosted Screenshot Machine captures, check requests and ask about coverage
If the capture is rendered by Screenshot Machine’s hosted API, local font installation is not a fix for the remote environment. Check whether the page’s own web-font request succeeds and whether the page has the right content, cookies, and language selection. Use the documented accept-language and cookie options when they address localization or session requirements; use a documented delay when a page or font needs more time to load. None of those options adds an installed font to the remote renderer.

The official API reference does not document font selection, font upload, or a local-renderer CLI option, and it does not establish which Indic fonts the hosted service currently has. If the page renders correctly elsewhere but remains broken in the hosted capture, provide Screenshot Machine support with the exact API request, affected language/script, a short sample, and the result in a normal browser. Ask whether the current renderer supports the required font and shaping behavior rather than assuming a host-side setting exists.
