Use Playwright or Puppeteer to launch Chromium with a proxy, navigate to the page, wait for the content you need, and call the screenshot API. With Playwright, you can set the proxy for the whole browser or an isolated browser context; Chromium also accepts proxy command-line flags. The examples below show the setup and explain how to choose a readiness condition, capture full pages or elements, and diagnose common failures.
Choose how to configure Chromium’s proxy
For automated screenshots, a browser automation framework is usually the most direct option. Playwright exposes proxy settings when launching a browser or creating a context. Puppeteer offers screenshot methods, while direct Chromium launch lets you set a proxy with command-line flags. Choose based on whether you need isolated proxy settings per session and which screenshot API you want to use.
| Approach | Proxy configuration | Screenshot capture | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Browser launch or browser context; documented options include HTTP(S) and SOCKSv5 proxies, optional username/password, and bypass hosts. Playwright proxy documentation | Page screenshot APIs | You want to scope proxy settings to an isolated context or use Playwright’s browser automation APIs. |
| Puppeteer | Chromium launch configuration; consult the documentation for the version and proxy setup you use. | Page.screenshot() and ElementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer screenshot guide |
You use Puppeteer and need a full-page or element screenshot. |
| Direct Chromium | --proxy-server or --no-proxy-server. |
Chromium itself does not provide the framework screenshot API shown here; pair it with an automation method if you need programmatic capture. | You need to set proxy routing through Chromium’s command line. Chromium network settings |
Playwright’s proxy configuration accepts a server address, optional credentials, and bypass hosts. A browser-level proxy applies broadly; a context-level proxy is useful when separate isolated sessions need different settings. Proxy authentication behavior can vary by provider and deployment, so follow your proxy service’s current instructions rather than assuming every scheme handles credentials identically.
Capture a page with Playwright and Chromium
Install Playwright and its Chromium build using the official installation instructions. Then save this as screenshot.mjs and run it with Node.js. Replace the example URL, proxy server, and output path with your values.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({
headless: true,
proxy: {
server: 'http://proxy.example:8080',
// Include these only if your proxy requires them:
username: 'YOUR_PROXY_USERNAME',
password: 'YOUR_PROXY_PASSWORD',
// Optional: hosts that should bypass the proxy.
// bypass: 'localhost,127.0.0.1'
}
});
try {
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 1365, height: 900 }
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle',
timeout: 60000
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await context.close();
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The example uses a browser-level proxy. To configure the proxy for an isolated Playwright context instead, omit proxy from chromium.launch() and pass it to browser.newContext({ proxy: { server: 'http://proxy.example:8080' } }). Keep each context’s pages within the intended proxy scope. See the Playwright proxy options for supported configuration and current details.
Set a deliberate page-ready condition
The example waits for networkidle, but that is not right for every site. Pages with long-running requests, analytics, or live updates may never become idle, while an idle network does not prove that the particular content you want has rendered. Choose the condition that matches the screenshot:
- Use a navigation milestone such as
domcontentloadedwhen the initial document is enough. - Wait for a specific selector when the screenshot depends on a particular component:
await page.locator('#report').waitFor({ state: 'visible' }); - For a dynamic application, wait for its known ready signal or an application-specific selector instead of relying only on network activity.
- If images or fonts matter, verify those resources are ready before capture; navigation completion alone may not ensure that every visual asset has finished rendering.
Give navigation and selector waits explicit timeouts in automated jobs. A timeout should produce a recorded failure that you can diagnose, not an apparently successful screenshot of a partial page.

Capture one element instead of the whole page
For a focused capture, locate the element and take its screenshot:
const report = page.locator('#report');
await report.waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 15000 });
await report.screenshot({ path: 'report.png' });
Use fullPage: true when you need the page beyond the current viewport; omit it for a viewport capture. Playwright’s screenshot options are documented in its screenshot guide.
Use Chromium’s command-line proxy setting
When launching Chromium directly, its documented --proxy-server flag accepts a proxy URI or per-scheme mappings. A single URI applies one proxy to all URLs; per-scheme mappings can select different proxies. --no-proxy-server disables proxy use.

chromium --proxy-server="http://proxy.example:8080" https://example.com
For example, a scheme-specific mapping follows the documented form --proxy-server="http=http://proxy.example:8080;https=http://proxy.example:8080". Check the Chromium network settings documentation for accepted syntax and platform-specific launch details. The command configures Chromium’s network routing; it is not, by itself, a programmatic screenshot workflow. Use an automation framework when you need repeatable navigation, readiness waits, and saved screenshot files.
Keep browser-download proxying separate from page traffic
A proxy used to download the browser or automation package is a different concern from the proxy that routes pages opened by Chromium.
- Playwright documents using
HTTPS_PROXYwhen installing browsers behind a firewall. If a proxy intercepts requests using a custom certificate authority, Playwright documents settingNODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTSbefore installation. See Playwright’s proxy and firewall installation guidance. - Puppeteer documents
HTTP_PROXY,HTTPS_PROXY, andNO_PROXYfor proxy-related download/run configuration, and notes that these settings are ignored bypuppeteer-core. They should not be treated as a substitute for configuring page traffic in Chromium. See Puppeteer configuration.
Make screenshots repeatable
A screenshot is a rendering result, not just a record of page HTML. Playwright notes that output can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For visual comparisons or baselines, keep those variables consistent and record them with the capture.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Pin or record the automation framework and Chromium versions.
- Keep viewport dimensions, device scale, locale, timezone, and other rendering settings consistent where relevant.
- Record whether you used headless mode and which Chromium build was selected.
- Use the same proxy configuration and target-page readiness condition when comparing captures.
Puppeteer documents headless: true for its new headless mode and headless: 'shell' for the old headless shell. Playwright documents a separate headless-shell build and an opt-in to newer headless mode using the chromium channel. These choices can affect rendering; consult the relevant framework documentation for the version you run. See Puppeteer headless modes and Playwright Chromium browser options.
Troubleshoot proxy screenshot failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Navigation times out or the page is blank | Proxy reachability, target-site access policy, or page-specific loading behavior. | Confirm the proxy server and port are reachable, verify the target is permitted by the proxy and site, and test a more appropriate readiness condition. Do not treat a timeout as a valid capture. |
| Proxy authentication fails | Credential format or provider-specific authentication behavior. | Check the provider’s current documentation and confirm that the credentials are being passed in the proxy configuration for the intended browser or context. |
| TLS or certificate errors appear | A proxy may intercept TLS using a custom CA that Chromium does not trust. | Check the proxy provider’s certificate instructions and configure trust appropriately for the environment. For Playwright browser installation behind an intercepting proxy, see its custom CA guidance. |
| Some pages bypass the proxy unexpectedly | Proxy scope or bypass-host configuration. | Check whether the setting is on the browser or context, and review any bypass list. Confirm which context owns the page. |
| The screenshot is incomplete although navigation succeeded | The chosen wait condition may not match the page’s rendering behavior. | Wait for the relevant selector or application-ready condition; if visual assets matter, verify they are loaded before capture. |
| Visual output differs between runs | Browser version, headless mode, operating system, viewport, or other environment differences. | Stabilize and record the rendering environment before comparing screenshots. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting HTTPS_PROXY route Chromium page traffic through a proxy?
Not necessarily. Browser-download proxy variables and Chromium’s page-traffic proxy configuration are separate; configure the browser or context proxy, or use Chromium’s proxy command-line option.
Can I use a different proxy for each Playwright session?
Yes. Playwright documents proxy configuration at browser-context scope, which is useful for isolated sessions that need different settings.
Does a proxy guarantee that a website will load?
No. Site access rules, proxy reachability, TLS trust, browser compatibility, and page-specific loading behavior can still prevent a successful capture.
