Chromium and WebKit screenshots in Playwright can differ even when the page and test are unchanged. Browser rendering, fonts, operating system, browser build, and capture settings all affect the image, so a cross-browser difference alone is not proof of a regression. Use a stable capture environment and compare each browser project with its own baseline.

What changes between Chromium and WebKit screenshots?

The image can differ because the engines and their environments do not render every page identically. Playwright says screenshot output can vary with rendering, fonts, and other factors; it does not define a universal list of elements or CSS properties that always shift in one engine. The visible difference depends on the page and capture environment. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance discusses these sources of variation.

When investigating a diff, inspect font availability and rendering, line wrapping and layout, platform-specific rendering, screenshot scale, and headless mode. These are diagnostic possibilities, not guaranteed Chromium or WebKit defects. No published typical pixel delta or average difference is established by the cited Playwright documentation.

What do Playwright’s Chromium and WebKit labels mean?

Playwright uses its own Chromium build by default. Its WebKit browser is built from WebKit main-branch sources; it is not the branded Safari browser. A WebKit screenshot is useful for engine coverage, but it should not be treated as an exact image of every Safari release or Apple device. WebKit capabilities can also vary by operating system. See Playwright’s browser documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up separate Chromium and WebKit projects

Run the same relevant test in both projects, but maintain a browser-specific visual baseline. Playwright’s snapshot paths include browser and platform names by default; in multi-project configurations, project names can be used in snapshot paths. Do not expect one reference image to match both engines. The snapshot documentation describes snapshot naming and configuration.

import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  projects: [
    {
      name: 'chromium',
      use: { ...devices['Desktop Chrome'], browserName: 'chromium' },
    },
    {
      name: 'webkit',
      use: { ...devices['Desktop Safari'], browserName: 'webkit' },
    },
  ],
});

Install Playwright and its browser binaries through your project’s normal dependency and installation process. Keep the Playwright version, browser binaries, host OS, settings, hardware, power state, and headless mode fixed when creating and checking baselines. Playwright notes that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” The official visual comparison documentation provides this qualification.

Make screenshot capture comparable

Choose the screenshot scale deliberately

Playwright page screenshots can use CSS-pixel scale or device-pixel scale. Device-pixel captures can have larger dimensions on high-DPI configurations. Use the same scale for baseline and actual images; otherwise, dimensions and pixel comparisons can mislead. Screenshot assertions default to CSS scale. See the page screenshot options and screenshot assertion options.

Wait for a stable image

toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the last capture to the reference. For genuinely variable content, its options can disable animations, mask regions, or apply a stylesheet. Use these narrowly: masking a changing region can reduce noise, but can also hide a real UI problem.

Set tolerances as review policy

Playwright supports a perceived color threshold and a maximum different-pixel count or ratio. Its documented default perceived-color threshold is 0.2 on its YIQ comparison scale; this is a tool setting, not a statistic about Chromium-versus-WebKit differences. Start with a comparison strict enough to reveal meaningful changes, inspect the diff, and adjust only when the team understands which variations are harmless. See the assertion documentation for threshold behavior and options.

Diagnose a cross-browser diff one variable at a time

First establish whether the comparison is between like-for-like captures. Keep every condition constant except the one you are investigating; then inspect the diff rather than assuming an engine-specific bug.

  • Browser project and build: confirm the image came from the intended Chromium or WebKit project and that the Playwright/browser versions match the baseline environment.
  • Operating system and fonts: verify that the host OS and installed fonts are consistent. Font availability and rendering can change glyph shapes, widths, and line wrapping.
  • Capture mode and machine: check headless mode, settings, hardware, and power state. Playwright identifies each as a possible rendering variable.
  • Scale and viewport: compare viewport, device scale factor, and screenshot scale. A difference in dimensions can make a visual comparison noisy or invalid.
  • Dynamic content: determine whether animations, timestamps, ads, or other changing areas need a stable wait, a targeted mask, or a screenshot stylesheet.
  • Actual product change: if the environment is stable and the diff remains, inspect the affected layout and behavior in both engines before deciding whether it is an application regression or an intended browser difference.

For a compatibility matrix, distinguish testing the same application across browser engines from testing the same engine across operating systems or devices. Choose projects based on the browsers and platforms your users support; multiplying every possible combination is not automatically useful. Playwright supports projects across browsers and devices, with platform capabilities varying by browser. Browser and device configuration details and project configuration explain the available approach.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-off website capture rather than a Playwright baseline assertion, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its API can capture a URL without setting up a browser project. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. Free includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. It is a capture API, not a replacement for Playwright’s browser-specific visual assertion workflow.
