ScreenshotMachine’s documented screenshot API takes a web-page URL, not a local HTML file path. Its documentation does not establish that a file:// URL or a path on your computer is supported. Also, the sources available do not identify an official ScreenshotMachine CLI, so the exact behavior depends on which command-line client or wrapper you are using.
Why a local HTML path may fail
ScreenshotMachine describes its url parameter as “The web page URL you want to capture.” The documented API workflow sends a URL to ScreenshotMachine’s hosted service; it does not describe a local filesystem path as the page to render. See the ScreenshotMachine API documentation.
This distinction matters because the page to capture and the file that receives the screenshot are separate things. The official Bash example sends a page URL and saves the returned image locally as output.png. Its PHP example likewise supplies a page URL and writes the resulting image to a local file. A local output filename does not mean the service can read a local HTML input file.
Check the command before changing it
- Identify the CLI. Check the executable or package name, its installed version, and its help output. The cited material documents ScreenshotMachine’s API and example clients, but does not identify a canonical CLI or establish the flags of a particular third-party wrapper.
- Inspect the value passed as
url. The API documentation calls for a web-page URL and recommends percent-encoding. Its parameter description says anhttp(s)://prefix is optional; it does not say a filesystem path is accepted. - Keep input and output separate. Pass the page address as the capture target, then specify the local image path only as the destination for the returned screenshot.
- Capture the exact failure details. For a CLI-specific diagnosis, record the command with secrets removed, package name and version, operating system, complete error output, and whether the HTML relies on relative assets.
Choose a workflow that matches where the HTML lives

If the page must remain local, choose a renderer whose documentation explicitly supports a local path. If you serve it instead, check that the capture service can reach the resulting address and that relative images, stylesheets, and scripts resolve correctly.

Common troubleshooting cases
- The command passes a path such as
./page.html. That is a filesystem path, not the URL-based API input shown in ScreenshotMachine’s documentation. Use a documented local-file renderer or serve the page at a reachable URL. - The command passes
file:///.... The cited ScreenshotMachine API material does not documentfile://support. Do not assume that a hosted capture service can access files on your computer. - The command saves an image but cannot find the HTML. Confirm which argument is the page URL and which is the output filename. ScreenshotMachine’s examples save the API response locally after supplying a page URL.
- A served page loads without its images or styles. Check whether the assets use relative paths and whether the server and capture service can retrieve them. The available sources do not establish the behavior of your server or CLI.
- You need an exact fix for a CLI error. The CLI’s identity is not established by the cited documentation. The package name, version, command, and full error are necessary before attributing flags or error handling to it.
