If Firefox’s Screenshot button is missing, open the menu and choose More Tools > Customize Toolbar. Drag Screenshot from the customization palette onto the toolbar, then click Done. If the item is missing from the palette too, try the alternate launch methods and troubleshooting checks below.
Try taking a screenshot without the toolbar button
The button may be missing while Firefox’s built-in capture tool is still available. Mozilla documents these alternatives:
- Page context menu: Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot.
- Keyboard shortcut: Press Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + S on macOS.
These are alternate ways to open the same Firefox feature; they do not restore the toolbar button. Mozilla’s Firefox Screenshots help article documents the menu, shortcut, and toolbar instructions.
Put Screenshot back on the toolbar
- Open the Firefox menu.
- Select More Tools > Customize Toolbar.
- Find Screenshot in the customization palette and drag it to the toolbar location you want.
- Click Done.
If Firefox shows different menu wording or layout, use the customization view reached through More Tools; the available interface can vary by Firefox version and operating system.

If Screenshot is missing from the customization palette
A Mozilla Support accepted answer for a Firefox 120 case dated November 24, 2023 recommends checking two advanced preferences and whether a policy disables screenshots. These are troubleshooting leads from that specific support case, not confirmation of universal defaults in every current Firefox version.
Check the preferences carefully
- Enter
about:configin the address bar and accept the warning if Firefox displays one. - Search for
extensions.screenshots.disabledandscreenshots.browser.component.enabled. - In the cited Firefox 120 case, the accepted answer says both should be
false. Verify the values rather than changing unrelated preferences.
Changing advanced preferences can affect browser behavior. If you are unsure what a setting does, or the preferences are absent or behave differently, do not guess at a replacement value; consult current Mozilla support guidance for your Firefox version.

Check whether a policy controls the feature
Open about:policies and check whether a browser policy is active. The cited support answer says a policy can disable screenshots. On a work- or school-managed device, an administrator may control that setting, so ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass it. The policy guidance comes from the Firefox 120 support case, not the current general help article. Read the accepted Mozilla Support answer.
Restore the toolbar defaults
If Screenshot is absent from both the toolbar and customization palette, the same support answer suggests choosing Restore Defaults in the Customize Toolbar view. The original poster reported that this resolved their case; it is not a guaranteed fix for every installation. Restoring defaults can undo other toolbar customizations, so consider whether you want to preserve your current layout first.

What Firefox Screenshots can capture
Mozilla says the built-in tool can capture a selected region, a page part highlighted as you move the pointer, the full page, or the currently visible portion. You can save the image to Firefox’s default download folder or copy it to the clipboard. The help article also describes keyboard operation for moving the crosshair and selecting an area; crosshair movement does not work on Wayland.
Privacy notes from Mozilla
Mozilla’s help article says Firefox Screenshots collects interaction data, such as whether you use Copy or Save full page, but does not collect the URL or details of the image captured. It says technical and interaction data collection can be disabled through Firefox’s data-collection setting, and that website data collection follows the browser’s Do Not Track setting.
