To capture lazy-loaded images with PhantomJS, open the page with JavaScript and image loading enabled, scroll down in viewport-sized steps, pause to let images load, check image completion, and only then call page.render. This is a best-effort legacy workflow, not a guarantee: PhantomJS development is suspended, and modern-site compatibility is not assured.
Why lazy-loaded images are missing
Lazy loading defers image requests until an image approaches the viewport. A screenshot taken while the page remains at the top may therefore omit images farther down. Scrolling the page gives viewport- or scroll-triggered loaders a chance to request and render those images. Google Chrome Developers explains browser-level lazy loading and recommends that images likely to appear in the first viewport not be lazy-loaded: Browser-level image lazy loading.
PhantomJS workflow: scroll, wait, check, render
The script below opens a page, scrolls down in steps with overlap, waits at each step, checks image state, and renders after the checks. Save it as capture.js, then run phantomjs capture.js https://example.com output.png. Adjust the viewport, waits, and output filename for the page and capture you need.
Runnable PhantomJS script
var page = require('webpage').create();
var system = require('system');
var url = system.args[1];
var output = system.args[2] || 'screenshot.png';
if (!url) {
console.log('Usage: phantomjs capture.js <url> [output.png]');
phantom.exit(1);
}
page.viewportSize = { width: 1365, height: 768 };
// These are also the documented defaults, but set them explicitly before open.
page.settings.javascriptEnabled = true;
page.settings.loadImages = true;
page.onConsoleMessage = function (message) {
console.log('PAGE: ' + message);
};
page.onResourceError = function (resourceError) {

};
function finishAfterScroll() {
// Let requests triggered near the bottom settle before inspecting and rendering.
window.setTimeout(function () {
var result = page.evaluate(function () {
var images = Array.prototype.slice.call(document.images);

}
if (page.render(output)) {
console.log('Saved ' + output);
} else {

}
phantom.exit(incomplete.length ? 2 : 0);
}, 1500);
}
function scrollStep(y, pageHeight) {
var nextY = Math.min(y + Math.max(200, page.viewportSize.height - 100), pageHeight);
page.evaluate(function (top) {
window.scrollTo(0, top);
}, nextY);
window.setTimeout(function () {
var dimensions = page.evaluate(function () {
return {
height: document.documentElement.scrollHeight,
y: window.pageYOffset || document.documentElement.scrollTop || 0
};
});
// Re-read height because content can grow as lazy content is inserted.
if (dimensions.y >= dimensions.height - page.viewportSize.height - 2) {
finishAfterScroll();
} else {
scrollStep(dimensions.y, dimensions.height);
}
}, 500);
}
page.open(url, function (status) {
console.log('Navigation status: ' + status);
if (status !== 'success') {
phantom.exit(1);
return;
}
window.setTimeout(function () {
var dimensions = page.evaluate(function () {
return { height: document.documentElement.scrollHeight, y: 0 };
});
scrollStep(dimensions.y, dimensions.height);
}, 500);
});
The 500 ms step pauses and 1,500 ms final pause are starting values, not universal load guarantees. Increase them for a slow page, or replace fixed delays with page-specific readiness checks when you control the site. The script exits with status 2 if its final inspection finds images that are incomplete or have a zero naturalWidth; a successful check still cannot prove that every image intended by the site is present.

What the script is doing
- It sets the viewport and page settings before
page.open. PhantomJS documents JavaScript and image loading as enabled by default; page settings apply during the initial navigation, so changing them after opening is too late for that load. See PhantomJS page settings. - Each scroll advances by nearly one viewport, retaining a small overlap. That helps trigger loaders that watch the viewport or scroll position; the exact trigger behavior is site-specific.
page.evaluateruns in the page context. It cannot use PhantomJS-side variables or exchange DOM nodes with the PhantomJS script. Pass simple JSON-compatible arguments and return simple JSON-compatible values, as this script does. See the evaluate API.- The final inspection uses
completeandnaturalWidthas practical signals. A failed request, dynamically replaced source, custom lazy-loading attribute, or image requiring user interaction may need a site-specific check.
Choose the output you actually need
page.render saves a rendered page to a file. PhantomJS documents PNG, JPEG, BMP, PPM, and PDF output; GIF support depends on the Qt build. Its screen-capture guide also documents viewport sizing and clipping: render API and screen-capture guide.
- Viewport screenshot: the output represents the configured viewport. Scrolling first can trigger lazy loading, but it does not by itself make the final image a full-page capture.
- Clipped capture: set a deliberate clip region when you need a particular area. Check the resulting dimensions.
- Long-page capture: use the capture approach supported by your PhantomJS build, and verify the actual output dimensions and clipping behavior. Do not assume a very tall viewport behaves consistently across builds.
Limitations and reliability
The PhantomJS homepage states, “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” It identifies QtWebKit as the backend: PhantomJS. This makes PhantomJS a legacy choice. Compatibility with current JavaScript and browser APIs should not be assumed, and no current compatibility matrix is established here.

Scrolling and inspecting images is a best-effort method rather than a PhantomJS feature that guarantees every site will load every image. If you maintain the site, disabling lazy loading for the capture route or exposing a page-ready signal is usually more dependable than guessing a delay. On a third-party page, inspect the output and the script’s image and resource errors.
Troubleshooting missing images or failed captures
- Images below the fold are still absent: confirm the page was scrolled in steps and that the pauses are long enough for that site. Increase the per-step wait, then check whether the page uses custom attributes, interaction, or a different trigger from ordinary viewport-based loading.
- The script reports incomplete images: review the logged URLs and resource errors. A network failure, blocked request, or a source that is swapped dynamically may explain the result. Do not treat a longer delay as a fix for a failed request.
- Navigation status is not
success: the script exits without rendering. Check the URL, network access, redirects, and PhantomJS console/resource errors; try a page your PhantomJS build can load before diagnosing the scrolling logic. - Images appear in the log but not in the output: check whether the screenshot is viewport-sized or clipped, and inspect the actual image dimensions. Triggering lazy loads and capturing the entire document are separate requirements.
- A modern page fails or renders incorrectly: PhantomJS’s suspended development and QtWebKit backend can make current browser features incompatible. A different, actively maintained browser automation workflow may be needed; this source set does not establish a specific replacement.

For an API-based capture, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its full-page capture option loads lazy images. Before capture it accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
