If Make cannot parse a screenshot API response, first check the HTTP status, Content-Type, and raw response body in the module’s run output. A successful capture may be raw image or PDF bytes—not JSON—while an error may be JSON. Set up the next module to handle the response the API actually returns, rather than assuming every screenshot endpoint has the same format.

Inspect the response before changing the parser

Run the scenario once, open the HTTP module’s output bundle or run log, and note these three things:

  • HTTP status: Did the request succeed, redirect, or return an error?
  • Content-Type: Does the header identify JSON, an image, a PDF, or something else?
  • Raw body: Is it readable JSON, a URL, or binary data?

Compare those details with the response contract for the exact screenshot provider, endpoint, and options you requested. Screenshot APIs do not share one standard response format: the same service may return different formats depending on its settings, and error responses may differ from successful captures.

Choose the Make step that matches the response

If the body is JSON

In Make’s HTTP app, turn on Parse response to structure supported response data for mapping. Make describes this setting as structuring output “so that it’s easy to map.” Run the module once before configuring downstream mappings; Make needs an execution to expose the returned fields. If the output is valid JSON but fields still do not appear, inspect the raw body and its content type before trying a JSON parser on the raw data.

Make’s custom-app documentation says automatic response parsing uses Content-Type and recognizes text/plain, application/json, application/x-www-form-urlencoded, application/xml, and text/xml. That reference concerns custom-app development; its response-type setting is not a control available in every standard HTTP module. If your provider can return JSON with an appropriate content type, use the provider’s documented option. Otherwise, explicitly parse the raw body if it is valid JSON.

If the body is an image or PDF

Raw media bytes are a file response, not a JSON object. A JSON parser cannot turn them into fields. Configure the next step to accept or store a file, or use a provider response mode that returns JSON metadata, base64 data, or a hosted URL if your workflow needs those forms. Check the provider’s instructions for passing the returned data into the specific downstream module you use.

If the response is a redirect or contains a hosted URL

Follow the provider’s documented redirect behavior or map the URL into a later download step. Do not assume a URL is the screenshot bytes themselves, or that every provider follows redirects in the same way.

Check errors before treating a response as a screenshot

A failed request can return a JSON error even when a successful capture returns binary bytes. Check the status first, then diagnose the error using the provider’s documentation. Common categories include a wrong endpoint, authentication failure, or invalid request parameters; the applicable error codes and authentication method vary by service.

Make’s HTTP app includes an option to return an error for 4xx or 5xx responses. If you enable it, design the scenario to handle that error path deliberately rather than expecting it to have the same output fields as a successful capture. A screenshot provider’s quickstart may also give specific handling advice: for example, ScreenshotEngine says to check HTTP status before using a response as an image. That is provider-specific guidance, not a universal response contract.

Use the provider’s response mode that suits your workflow

When an API offers several modes, choose based on what the next Make module needs: structured fields, a file, or a downloadable URL. These documented examples illustrate why the provider’s own API reference matters:

Provider and option Documented response What to map or pass on
ScreenshotEngine Successful captures return raw file bytes; errors return JSON. Successful content types can identify image, PDF, or video output. Handle a successful capture as a file and check the status before using it as an image.
Allscreenshots, default Binary output. Handle the response as a file.
Allscreenshots, responseType=base64 JSON containing base64 data. Parse the JSON, then use the base64 value as required by the next step.
Allscreenshots, URL mode JSON containing a download URL. Parse and pass the URL to the next step.
Screenshot API, default JSON. Parse the documented JSON fields.
Screenshot API, redirect option A redirect to the image or PDF. Handle the redirect according to the provider’s documentation.

Those formats describe the named providers’ documented behavior, not what all screenshot APIs return.

Refresh mappings and test both outcomes

  1. After correcting the response handling, run the HTTP module again.
  2. Inspect the new output and confirm the fields or file data are present.
  3. Refresh or reselect downstream mappings if the output structure changed.
  4. Test a successful capture and, where possible, an unsuccessful request so the scenario handles both paths intentionally.

Make’s current HTTP documentation covers HTTP Version 4. If your scenario uses the legacy HTTP app, Make says to select Version 3; its interface and settings may differ.

Troubleshooting by symptom

What you see Likely explanation What to do
No mappable fields after adding the HTTP module The module has not run yet, or the response is not structured JSON. Run it once, inspect the output, then enable Parse response if the body is JSON.
The body looks like unreadable characters The endpoint may have returned binary image or PDF data. Handle it as a file or select a documented JSON/base64/URL response mode.
The body contains JSON but Make exposes no fields The response may have an unexpected or unsupported content type, or parsing may not be enabled. Compare the header with the body, check Parse response, and try parsing the raw body explicitly if it is valid JSON.
The parser reports an error and the status is unsuccessful You may be trying to process an error response as if it were a successful capture. Fix the request or authentication issue and branch on the status or error path.
A URL appears instead of an image in the output The provider may return a hosted URL or use a redirect mode. Follow the provider’s documented behavior and pass the URL or fetched file downstream as appropriate.
Downstream fields are missing after a change Make may still be using an older output shape. Run the updated module and refresh the mappings.

Or skip the browser setup

If you would rather use a screenshot API with a documented one-request response, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Use this cURL example, replacing the target URL with the page you need to capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request and response details. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; these cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Make’s Parse response option make every screenshot response into JSON?

No. It structures supported response data for mapping, but raw image or PDF bytes are not JSON.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the same screenshot API return JSON sometimes and an image other times?

Some providers use different formats for successful captures and errors, or offer response modes such as binary, base64 JSON, or a URL. Check the documentation for your endpoint and options.
