Can PhantomJS still take screenshots?
Yes. PhantomJS is not devoid of screenshot features: its official guide demonstrates opening a page and rendering it, setting a viewport, and clipping to a rectangle. It lists PNG, JPEG, GIF, and PDF output and describes capturing HTML/CSS, SVG, images, and Canvas through its WebKit-backed renderer. The limiting issue for a new project is not whether it can capture; it is that the project homepage says development is suspended.
That makes PhantomJS reasonable mainly where an existing legacy script still serves a purpose and changing it would add risk or cost. For a new automation pipeline, suspended development is a poor foundation when a currently documented alternative offers multiple browser engines and an integrated screenshot assertion workflow.
Why Playwright is the better fit for new automation
Capture across browser engines
Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects. It also documents installing the browser binaries used by Playwright and using branded Chrome or Edge channels. Browser versions evolve with Playwright releases, so browser installation and update steps belong in CI maintenance rather than being treated as a one-time setup.

Capture and test are connected, but distinct
A screenshot is an image output; visual regression testing adds a reference image and a comparison step. The Playwright Page API provides page.screenshot(). In Playwright Test, toHaveScreenshot() can create a reference image on an initial run and compare later runs against it. When an intentional UI change is accepted, the snapshot update option can regenerate the reference. A changed screenshot is a signal to inspect, not proof by itself that the page is broken or correct.
Expect environment-sensitive output
Playwright warns that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Its visual comparisons guidance therefore recommends using the same environment as the baseline. Keep the browser and OS stable, pin fonts and viewport where practical, and control dynamic page content. Where content changes unpredictably, the documentation describes using a custom stylesheet to filter volatile elements from visual comparisons.

How to capture and compare screenshots with Playwright
- Install Playwright and its test runner. In a Node.js project, run
npm init playwright@latestand follow the setup prompts. Install the browser binaries required by the configured projects withnpx playwright install; use the browser installation options in the browser documentation if CI or branded Chrome/Edge is part of your setup. - Capture a page directly. Create

Choosing between them for an existing project
- Starting fresh: use Playwright if current cross-browser automation or maintained screenshot comparisons matter.
- Maintaining PhantomJS: keep it only when its legacy role is understood and the cost or compatibility risk of migration justifies continued use. Its suspended status should be part of the maintenance decision.

Common problems and fixes
Playwright cannot launch a browser in CI
The browser binary may not be installed in that environment or may not match the Playwright setup. Add the documented Playwright browser installation step to CI and keep it aligned with the Playwright version and configured projects.
Visual tests fail after a machine or browser update
Rendering can change with the OS, browser version, settings, hardware, fonts, and headless mode. Re-run comparisons in the baseline environment where possible; if the change is intentional, inspect and update the reference rather than treating the diff as an automatic approval.

Repeated screenshot diffs come from changing content
Dates, rotating banners, animations, or other volatile content can make captures differ even when the layout is sound. Stabilize test data or use Playwright’s documented custom stylesheet option to filter elements that should not participate in the comparison.
A PhantomJS script captures an unexpected page area
Check its configured viewport and clipping rectangle against the intended capture bounds. Both are explicit parts of the PhantomJS screenshot guide, and an incorrect value can change the captured region.
