You can run a legacy PhantomJS screenshot script in AWS Lambda by packaging a Linux PhantomJS executable and its dependencies with the script, then invoking the executable from your Lambda handler. But PhantomJS development is suspended, and AWS does not certify any PhantomJS binary for current Lambda runtimes or architectures. Treat this as a migration or compatibility project: verify the exact binary on your chosen Lambda environment before relying on it.
What to know before deploying PhantomJS
PhantomJS is a scriptable headless browser based on QtWebKit. Its project homepage states: “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” The command-line guide documents version 2.1.1; that is the version referenced by the legacy guide, not evidence of a currently maintained release. PhantomJS project · PhantomJS command-line guide
That maintenance status matters on Lambda. A PhantomJS executable must match the function’s operating system, CPU architecture, and available shared libraries. AWS documents deployment formats and quotas, but does not promise compatibility for PhantomJS. There is no source-backed, universally supported PhantomJS-on-Lambda binary or configuration to copy into a deployment.
How the screenshot script works
PhantomJS runs as a separate executable and receives a JavaScript script file as an argument. Its documented command shape is phantomjs [options] somescript.js [args...]. In the basic capture pattern, the script creates a webpage, opens a URL, renders from the page-open callback, and exits. The API also supports setting a viewport and a clip rectangle; documented render formats include PNG, JPEG, GIF, and PDF. Command-line guide · Screen-capture guide

A Lambda handler therefore has two jobs: run the executable and make the resulting file available before the invocation ends. The following Node.js sketch shows the process-launch pattern. It assumes you have already supplied a compatible executable and that your PhantomJS script accepts the URL and output path as arguments; those argument conventions are yours to implement in the script.
const { execFile } = require('node:child_process');
const { promisify } = require('node:util');
const { readFile } = require('node:fs/promises');
const path = require('node:path');
const execFileAsync = promisify(execFile);
exports.handler = async (event) => {
const url = event.url;
if (!url) throw new Error('Provide event.url');
const output = '/tmp/capture.png';
const phantom = path.join(__dirname, 'bin', 'phantomjs');
const script = path.join(__dirname, 'capture.js');
await execFileAsync(phantom, [script, url, output], { timeout: 120000 });
const image = await readFile(output);
// Return a base64-encoded image from a synchronous invocation.
return {
statusCode: 200,
headers: { 'content-type': 'image/png' },
isBase64Encoded: true,
body: image.toString('base64')
};
};
This example illustrates invocation and response handling, not a tested PhantomJS Lambda package. Adapt the return mechanism to your caller: for larger captures or asynchronous workflows, upload the file to object storage and return a reference instead of embedding the image in the response. Use unique output filenames if a warm execution environment might process overlapping work, and avoid treating a previous invocation’s temporary file as a new capture.

Package and configure the Lambda function
- Choose the runtime and architecture first. Obtain or build a Linux PhantomJS executable for that exact environment. Check its architecture, executable permissions, shared-library dependencies, and any runtime-specific requirements. Do not assume an old binary or Lambda layer works on a current runtime.
- Choose ZIP or container packaging. A ZIP can contain the function code and dependencies, including layers, subject to the combined unzipped quota. A container image provides more control over the build and runtime environment. Neither method by itself makes an incompatible executable work.
- Include the script and executable. Put the script and PhantomJS binary at paths your handler can resolve. Ensure the binary is executable in the deployed artifact. If it depends on additional libraries, include them in a compatible way and verify that the executable can locate them at runtime.
- Write output under
/tmp. Lambda provides configurable temporary storage. Read the screenshot, return it, or persist it (for example, by uploading it to object storage) during the invocation; do not rely on temporary storage as durable output. - Set memory and timeout by measurement. Begin with conservative limits appropriate to the workload, then measure actual captures in the deployed function. Page complexity, image size, and loading behavior vary, so the AWS maximums are limits—not PhantomJS recommendations.
- Test the deployed artifact. Invoke the packaged function on the selected runtime and architecture. Confirm that the process starts, dependencies load, the target page renders, and the image can be read or stored. Local success alone does not establish Lambda compatibility.
AWS currently lists these relevant Lambda limits; check the Lambda quotas page for updates:
| Setting or package | Published limit | What it means here |
|---|---|---|
| ZIP deployment package contents, including layers | 250 MB unzipped | The combined unzipped contents must fit. |
| Container image | 10 GB uncompressed | Allows a larger packaged environment, but does not certify PhantomJS compatibility. |
| Function memory | 128 MB to 10,240 MB | Choose based on measurements in the deployed function. |
| Ordinary function timeout | Up to 900 seconds | Set a timeout appropriate to your capture and invocation path. |
/tmp storage |
512 MB to 10,240 MB | Temporary storage is configurable; screenshot output is not durable storage. |
Make the capture wait for the page you need
The simple PhantomJS example renders after the page-open callback, but that callback does not guarantee that a modern web app has finished fetching data, animating, or loading lazy content. A fixed delay can be too short on a slow page and waste time on a fast one. Prefer a page-specific readiness condition—such as checking for a known element or application state—before calling page.render(). The exact condition depends on the site being captured.

Also decide deliberately whether the screenshot should include the full document or only the visible viewport. PhantomJS supports viewport sizing and a clip rectangle; verify the dimensions and output format with the actual script rather than assuming a full-page capture happens automatically.
Keep PhantomJS or migrate to Chromium?
For an existing script, retaining PhantomJS may avoid the work of porting its page logic, but it leaves you responsible for an unmaintained browser and for proving the binary works in your Lambda environment. For a new implementation, evaluate a maintained Chromium automation option and verify its package maintenance, Lambda OS and architecture compatibility, deployment size, memory use, cold-start behavior, and screenshot fidelity. A serverless-chrome repository illustrates the general Lambda browser pattern, including scaffolding and screenshot examples; it is not a certification that a particular current package or browser build is maintained or compatible.

The available evidence establishes PhantomJS’s suspended development and AWS’s packaging limits, not a performance winner. Compare the two approaches using a representative page and the target runtime, and include the cost of porting legacy PhantomJS APIs in the decision.

- “Exec format error” or the process will not start: the executable may target a different CPU architecture or operating system. Rebuild or obtain a binary for the selected Lambda environment and test the packaged artifact there.
- “No such file or directory” despite the binary being present: a required shared library or runtime loader may be missing. Inspect the binary’s dependencies in a compatible build environment and package compatible libraries.
- Permission denied: verify that the deployed executable has execute permission and that the handler points to its actual path.
- Capture is blank or incomplete: the page may not have reached the content state your capture needs. Add a page-specific readiness check and log whether the page opened successfully before rendering.
- Invocation times out: investigate slow page loads, blocked requests, and the script’s waiting behavior. Measure under Lambda, then tune timeout and memory; AWS’s maximum timeout is not a guarantee that a page will finish.
- Output file is missing or stale: check the script’s output path and error handling, write to
/tmp, and use a unique filename per capture. Confirm that the handler reads the file only after the PhantomJS process exits successfully. - ZIP deployment exceeds its limit: reduce unnecessary dependencies or use a container image if the needed environment does not fit the ZIP quota. A container changes packaging control, not browser compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does PhantomJS still work on AWS Lambda?
There is no general compatibility guarantee. It may run only if the specific executable and its dependencies match the selected Lambda runtime and architecture; test the deployed artifact.
Can I use an old PhantomJS Lambda layer?
An old layer is not evidence of support for a current Lambda runtime. Verify its binary architecture, libraries, permissions, and behavior in your target environment.
Should I use a ZIP or a container image?
Use a ZIP when the function and dependencies fit the combined unzipped package quota. Choose a container when you need more control of the build environment or the package is too large for ZIP; neither format guarantees PhantomJS compatibility.
