Set HTTP Basic Authentication credentials on a Playwright browser context before navigating to the protected page, wait until the content you need is ready, then save it with page.screenshot(). The example below captures the full page; remove fullPage: true to capture only the visible viewport.
Capture a protected page with Playwright
This TypeScript example reads credentials from environment variables, scopes them to the target origin, waits for a page-specific element, and writes a full-page PNG:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const username = process.env.BASIC_AUTH_USERNAME;
const password = process.env.BASIC_AUTH_PASSWORD;
if (!username || !password) {
throw new Error('Set BASIC_AUTH_USERNAME and BASIC_AUTH_PASSWORD');
}
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const context = await browser.newContext({
httpCredentials: {
username,
password,
origin: 'https://example.com',
},
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com/protected-page');
await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Replace the example origin, URL, and readiness selector with values for your site. The main selector is illustrative: wait for an element that signals the specific content you need is present. Playwright documents httpCredentials as a browser-context option and allows its origin to limit the credentials to a scheme, host, and port. See the BrowserContext API.
Configure credentials safely
Use the context before navigation
Create the context with httpCredentials before opening the protected URL. Use the username and password expected by the HTTP Basic Authentication challenge. When the browser visits the matching origin, Playwright can supply those credentials to the challenge.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Restrict the origin when practical
Set origin to the protected resource’s exact origin, including the scheme and any non-default port. This helps avoid applying credentials to unrelated origins. The API also supports an array for configuring different credentials for different origins. The BrowserType API documents browser-type-level HTTP credential configuration as well; choose the setup point appropriate to your browser configuration and consult the documentation for your installed Playwright version.
Keep secrets out of source control
Supply credentials through environment variables or a project-appropriate secret manager. Do not hard-code real credentials in source code or commit them in configuration files. Restrict access to the environment or secret store that provides them.

Choose what the screenshot includes
Viewport or full page
By default, page.screenshot() captures the visible viewport. Set fullPage: true to request the full scrollable page, which is useful for long documents but can produce a much taller image. The option and screenshot behavior are documented in the Page API.
Output format
The example’s .png path produces the documented default PNG output. Playwright also supports JPEG and, in supported configurations, other screenshot options; check the Page API for the exact options available to your installed version. Use the extension that matches the desired output format.

Wait for the content, not just navigation
A successful page.goto() does not necessarily mean that the page’s useful content has rendered. For client-rendered pages or pages with delayed content, wait for a page-specific locator, a known state change, or another reliable condition before taking the screenshot. Avoid assuming that the document title or a generic navigation event proves the target content is ready.
Reuse authenticated browser state carefully
For a one-off capture, context-level HTTP credentials are usually the direct approach. For reusable browser state in tests, Playwright’s authentication guide describes saving state under playwright/.auth, adding that path to .gitignore, and reusing the saved state. Such files can contain sensitive cookies and headers capable of impersonating a user. Read Playwright’s authentication guide.

Saved cookies or local storage and HTTP Basic Authentication are different mechanisms. If the server still challenges requests with HTTP Basic Authentication, configure httpCredentials for the protected origin; do not assume a saved storage-state file replaces that challenge. If parallel tests share one account and change server-side state, Playwright’s guide advises using separate accounts rather than sharing that account across tests.
Troubleshoot failed or misleading captures
- The page shows an authentication prompt or an error: Check the username and password, confirm the protected URL uses the origin configured in
httpCredentials, and verify the scheme, host, and port. Set the credentials before navigating. - The page loads but the screenshot is blank or incomplete: Wait for an application-specific element or state that indicates the target content has rendered. Navigation completing alone may be too early.
- The screenshot only shows part of a long page: Add
fullPage: true. Without it, the capture is limited to the viewport. - Credentials appear to be used beyond the intended site: Set the optional
originrestriction to the protected origin, or configure distinct credentials for separate origins as supported by the API. - A later run no longer authenticates: Check whether the workflow depends on HTTP Basic Authentication, browser storage state, or both. A persisted state file does not substitute for HTTP credentials when the server issues a Basic Authentication challenge.
- A capture works locally but fails in another environment: Confirm the credentials are present in that environment, the installed Playwright version supports the options used, and the protected host is reachable. Consult the current API documentation for version-specific behavior.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Wait for the narrowest reliable readiness condition that proves the required content is available; an unnecessarily broad wait can delay capture, while a premature screenshot can miss content. Full-page captures include more pixels than viewport captures and may take longer or create larger files, especially on long pages. Protect both environment secrets and any saved authentication-state files as credentials. This workflow uses Playwright and your browser environment; its execution cost depends on your own infrastructure and is not established by the API documentation cited here.
