First, remove public access. Restrict the Grid’s entry point to trusted test clients and allow only the internal traffic its components need. Then enable the authentication, HTTPS, and registration controls supported by your deployed Selenium version, and verify the boundary from both trusted and untrusted networks. A password is not a substitute for network isolation.

Why an exposed Grid needs immediate attention

Selenium warns that “Selenium Grid must be protected from external access using appropriate firewall permissions.” An exposed Grid can give outsiders access to its infrastructure, internal web applications and files, or the ability to run custom binaries. The risk is not limited to someone viewing the Grid UI: an unauthorized party may be able to create browser sessions and use the machines behind the Grid.

Grid routes WebDriver commands to remote browser instances, often across multiple machines and browser versions. In Grid 4, the Router is the entry point for requests and forwards them to the relevant component; requests for an existing session go to the Node running that session. Treat the user-facing Router and the internal component network as distinct security boundaries.

Selenium’s July 31, 2024 post about SeleniumGreed described crypto miners being started through session creation. It said Grid has no authentication by default, that the abuse could affect most Selenium versions, and that attackers showed particular interest in Grid 3.14. The post advised upgrading because some security items had been added since that version. This is dated threat context—not evidence that an upgrade alone makes an exposed Grid safe. 1. Find and close every public route to the Grid

Inventory the whole path from the Internet or other untrusted networks to the Grid, rather than checking only the Selenium process. Review the host’s bind address, container port publishing, Kubernetes Services and Ingress, cloud firewall or security-group rules, and any load balancer or reverse proxy. Deny unsolicited external traffic. Allow only identified test clients to reach the user-facing endpoint, and allow only the necessary flows between Grid components.

Selenium documents Standalone’s default RemoteWebDriver address as http://localhost:4444. That default does not prove a deployed instance is private: a process may bind differently, and a container or proxy may publish the port. Check the actual listener and every network layer in front of it.

Keep component ports internal unless your topology requires otherwise

Selenium’s Grid 4 getting-started documentation identifies Event Bus ports 4442, 4443, and 5557, and Session Queue port 5559; the Router’s user-facing address is normally 4444. The documentation’s example requires components to communicate over the relevant ports. That is an internal connectivity requirement, not a reason to expose all of those ports to the public Internet. Confirm the flags and topology of your deployment before writing allow rules. Selenium Grid getting-started documentation

There is no universal firewall rule set for every Grid. A Standalone process, Hub/Node setup, and fully distributed Grid have different communication needs. Record the exact components, addresses, ports, and authorized clients before changing policy; do not assume the port list above is complete for your deployment.

2. Enable authentication and protect registration

Configure Basic authentication

Selenium’s TOML configuration supports a username and password for the Router. Its documentation says the credential pair is needed to load the Grid UI or start a new session. Configure credentials using the syntax for your installed Selenium version, keep them in your deployment’s secret store, and avoid exposing them in command histories, logs, or public documentation. Basic authentication does not replace restricting network reachability.

See Selenium’s TOML configuration options for the documented configuration. Confirm the exact section and syntax against the version you run rather than copying configuration blindly from a different release.

Use the registration secret in applicable distributed setups

The Selenium CLI reference describes --registration-secret as a shared secret for authenticating Node registration requests; its value must match on the Hub/Distributor and the registering Node. Use it when your topology supports and requires it, store it as a secret, and restrict the registration and control paths to trusted components. A secret does not make an otherwise public component network safe.

3. Protect traffic with HTTPS

Selenium’s CLI reference lists --https-certificate and --https-private-key for HTTPS configuration. Configure TLS at the Selenium entry point or at a trusted proxy according to your architecture, and ensure the client-to-entry-point connection is encrypted. Assess the proxy-to-Grid leg separately: it should also be protected in line with the threat model and network boundaries. Selenium documents the server options but does not prescribe a universal reverse-proxy design.

4. Check the deployed version’s security guidance

Run the security help command using the Selenium Server JAR actually deployed:

java -jar selenium-server-<version>.jar info security

Selenium says this output covers secure communication and Node registration. Its configuration-help documentation also explains that help reflects the current code implementation and is the easiest way to confirm options when documentation may not reflect a changed or newly added setting. Use this output to validate flag names and requirements before rollout. Selenium configuration help

5. Verify the boundary after the change

  1. From an untrusted network: attempt to reach the user-facing endpoint and relevant management or component ports. Confirm they are not reachable from networks that should not have access.
  2. From an authorized test client: confirm the expected authentication and TLS behavior, then create a session using the intended client path.
  3. In a distributed deployment: confirm required component-to-component flows still work and Node registration uses the configured secret.
  4. Review the full ingress path: check network policy, cloud rules, load balancers, proxies, container publishing, and Kubernetes resources for routes that could re-expose the Grid.
  5. Check logs and secret handling: ensure credentials and registration secrets are not being written to logs or exposed in deployment output.

These are verification steps derived from Selenium’s documented risks and settings; results depend on your actual network and configuration.

Deployment checklist

  • Grid mode: Standalone, Hub/Node, or fully distributed.
  • Every externally reachable hostname, port, bind address, container mapping, ingress, load balancer, and proxy.
  • Which clients may create sessions, and whether users need Grid UI access.
  • Required component communication ports for the actual topology.
  • Where TLS terminates and how each network leg is protected.
  • How Basic-auth credentials and registration secrets are stored, rotated, and excluded from logs.
  • Installed Selenium version and the output of that artifact’s info security command.

Troubleshooting common hardening problems

The Grid is still reachable from outside

Look beyond the Selenium listener. A localhost default does not prevent a container port, cloud rule, Kubernetes ingress, or proxy from publishing the service. Trace the route from the external network to the process and remove or restrict the publishing rule at the layer that creates exposure.

Nodes cannot register or components cannot communicate

A firewall change may have blocked a required internal flow. Compare the allowed paths with the deployed Grid mode and actual component configuration; permit only the needed internal traffic. In setups using a registration secret, confirm the Node and Hub/Distributor values match and that the relevant option is supported by the installed version.

Authentication or TLS options do not work as expected

Check the TOML and CLI option names against the installed artifact’s info security output and configuration help. Confirm the client is reaching the intended TLS endpoint and that any proxy’s TLS termination and upstream connection match your design. Selenium’s documentation does not establish one proxy recipe that fits every deployment.
