Replace Selenium’s deprecated Java event classes with WebDriverListener and EventFiringDecorator. Implement only the callbacks you need, decorate the original driver, and use the decorated driver wherever you want events observed. Selenium removed the deprecated classes in version 4.17.0, released January 23, 2024.
What changes in the migration?
The old API combined listener classes with an event-firing driver wrapper. The replacement separates observation from wrapping: a listener describes which events to observe, and a decorator wraps a driver so calls can trigger those events.
| Deprecated API | Replacement | What to change |
|---|---|---|
WebDriverEventListener |
WebDriverListener |
Update callback names and signatures; keep only the callbacks you use. |
AbstractEventListener |
WebDriverListener |
Remove the adapter superclass and override selected default methods. |
EventFiringWebDriver |
EventFiringDecorator |
Create the decorator, call decorate(driver), and use its returned driver. |
.register(listener1).register(listener2) |
new EventFiringDecorator(listener1, listener2) |
Pass listeners to the decorator constructor. |
Selenium documents the replacement pattern in its event-firing API documentation and migration article.
Implement a listener and decorate the driver
This minimal example observes navigation and element lookup. The listener interface has empty default implementations, so you do not need to provide every callback.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriverListener;
import org.openqa.selenium.firefox.FirefoxDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.events.EventFiringDecorator;
public class NavigationListener implements WebDriverListener {
@Override
public void beforeGet(WebDriver driver, String url) {
System.out.println("Navigating to: " + url);
}
@Override
public void afterFindElement(WebDriver driver, By locator, WebElement element) {
System.out.println("Found element using: " + locator);
}
public static void main(String[] args) {
WebDriver original = new FirefoxDriver();
WebDriverListener listener = new NavigationListener();
WebDriver decorated = new EventFiringDecorator(listener).decorate(original);
try {
decorated.get("https://example.com");
decorated.findElement(By.tagName("h1"));
} finally {
decorated.quit();
}
}
}
Add the missing WebElement import for this example:
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
The key detail is the assignment to decorated. Subsequent calls must use that returned wrapper. The decorator wraps a WebDriver, emits events for driver calls and derived objects such as WebElement and Alert, and creates a wrapper implementing the same interfaces as the original driver.

Translate callbacks by behavior, not just by name
Callback names, arguments, and return values can differ. Review every old callback you used and map its behavior to the replacement API rather than mechanically changing imports. For example, an old callback shaped like beforeAlertAccept(WebDriver) maps to beforeAccept(Alert).
Choose specific callbacks for focused instrumentation
Method-specific callbacks are suited to a known operation, such as navigation or accepting an alert. Before callbacks receive the call arguments. Successful after callbacks receive the arguments and result. Use these when the instrumentation should be limited and easy to interpret.

Use generic callbacks for broader logging
The API also provides broader callbacks such as beforeAnyCall and afterAnyCall, as well as scoped callbacks for WebDriver and WebElement calls. These can expose method, arguments, result, and thread context for wide-ranging logging. Their wider scope can produce more noise than targeted callbacks.
Handle failures separately
An after callback represents a successful call; methods that throw are covered by a separate error-callback category. If the old instrumentation recorded failures, map it to error callbacks as well as any success callbacks you need. Do not assume a successful after callback will run for exceptions.

Pass the decorated driver throughout the test framework
Events are observed only when calls pass through the decorated wrapper. After creating it, provide that instance to setup helpers, page objects, and other framework components that need event coverage. If any component retains or receives the original driver and uses it directly, its calls bypass the decorator.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.When to extend the decorator
For ordinary logging or observation, start with WebDriverListener. If the old implementation changed the underlying invocation—for example, customized findElement to attach metadata—Selenium’s migration examples show extending EventFiringDecorator and overriding its call handling. Delegate uncustomized behavior to super.call. The migration article also demonstrates customizing decorated WebElement instances. This is a separate, more advanced path; verify that custom wrappers preserve the behavior your framework depends on.

Migration checklist
- Search source code and imports for
AbstractEventListener,EventFiringWebDriver, andWebDriverEventListener. - Replace listener implementations with
WebDriverListener, retaining only the callbacks the project needs. - Translate each callback’s name, parameters, return/result handling, and success-versus-error behavior.
- Replace wrapper construction and registration with
new EventFiringDecorator(listener1, listener2)anddecorate(originalDriver). - Pass the returned decorated driver through every code path where events must be observed.
- If the old code altered invocations or returned elements, assess a decorator subclass rather than assuming a listener is equivalent.
- Compile and run the project’s own tests against its pinned Selenium version, including tests for wrappers and custom event behavior.
Check Selenium version and Java requirements
Selenium 4.17.0 removed the deprecated event-listener classes from the Java binding; the release announcement identifies WebDriverListener and EventFiringDecorator as replacements. Confirm the version pinned in your build before applying the migration. Selenium’s Java README describes the org.seleniumhq.selenium:selenium-java Maven or Gradle dependency and lists Java 11 or later as the requirement. The replacement API documentation marks both replacement types @Beta, so validate integration with your project’s own framework and pinned version.
