There is no single cheapest cloud server for every podcast archive: the right choice depends on stream hours, bitrate, archive size, storage retention and whether you need transcoding. For a technically comfortable creator running one modest prerecorded feed, start by pricing a small Linux VPS in an Indian region and checking its outbound-transfer allowance against the stream’s actual bitrate. Amazon Lightsail is a straightforward fixed-bundle reference, but its Mumbai transfer allowance is half the displayed baseline. If you prefer not to manage a server, StreamNeo is a different, managed option: it keeps uploaded videos live on YouTube from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
What “low-cost” means for a continuous podcast stream
Compare the total cost of keeping the feed running, not just the monthly compute price. A server that looks inexpensive can cost more once storage, outbound traffic, taxes, and administration are included. A managed live-encoding service is a different service model from renting a virtual private server (VPS), so its bill should not be compared with a VPS compute price alone.
- Runtime: Estimate the hours you will stream each month. Continuous operation means roughly 24 hours a day, every day, while a scheduled feed may run much less.
- Outgoing bitrate: YouTube receives a continuing stream; the podcast files’ size does not determine the outgoing traffic by itself. Estimate egress from the selected stream bitrate and hours.
- Storage: Add up the video files you want available locally or on the server, plus any backup and retention copies.
- Compute: If the server only replays or relays a pre-encoded video, its compute needs differ from a server that must transcode. Transcoding increases the importance of CPU capacity.
- Operations: Include setup, monitoring, reconnect handling, security updates, and recovery from a process or network failure.
YouTube’s current H.264 encoder guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that any particular VM will sustain the stream.

Cloud options available to consider in India
| Option | What the cited offer establishes | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo — managed YouTube streaming | Uploaded videos can run as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud, with looping and playlists. Each slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps without re-encoding, includes 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free without a card. | It is not a VPS: you do not manage a server or stream from a camera. Confirm that its uploaded-video workflow fits your archive and channel needs. |
| Amazon Lightsail — self-managed VPS | AWS lists a lowest public-IPv4 Linux/Unix bundle at $5 USD/month with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and a displayed 1 TB transfer allowance. AWS says Mumbai-region plans include half the displayed transfer allowance. AWS counts both incoming and outgoing transfer against the allowance; outbound excess can incur charges. See AWS Lightsail pricing. | Confirm current Mumbai plan pricing, the region-specific transfer allowance, expected egress and any overage. The smallest bundle’s resources may not suit a workload that transcodes. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API — managed encoding | This is a managed encoding and streaming service, not a like-for-like VPS. Google says billing depends on active channel time and input/output resolution; there is a 10-minute minimum, then active duration is rounded up to the nearest minute. Mumbai appears in the pricing table. See Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing. | Estimate billable runtime and output resolutions using the current pricing page. It may suit managed transcoding, but may cost more than a low-end VPS depending on runtime and outputs. |
| Oracle Cloud — India-region compute candidate | Oracle’s India price list separates compute and storage pricing and explains OCPU/vCPU equivalence. The available price-list information does not establish a directly comparable cost for the smallest relevant VM. See Oracle Cloud India price list. | Use Oracle’s official price calculator for the actual VM shape, boot or block volume, outbound traffic, and taxes before ranking it against alternatives. |
Which option should you start with?
For a hands-on creator seeking a low VPS bill
Model a small Linux VPS in an Indian region, then test whether its network can sustain the chosen outgoing bitrate and whether its CPU can handle any required encoding. Lightsail is a simple reference point for a fixed bundle, but its listed transfer allowance is not the Mumbai allowance: AWS states Mumbai plans include half of the displayed amount. Do not treat the $5 bundle as a complete cost estimate or as proof that it is the cheapest option for your workload.

Estimate outbound traffic before renting a server
Use the outgoing bitrate as the starting point. At a constant bitrate, each 1 Mbps of video is about 0.45 GB per hour in decimal units, before protocol overhead. Multiply by the expected streaming hours to estimate the stream’s monthly egress; then check whether the provider counts any other traffic against the same allowance. For example, a 5 Mbps stream running around the clock for a 30-day month is roughly 3,240 GB of video egress before overhead. This is an estimate derived from bitrate and time, not a provider quote.

- Calculate hours: Multiply daily streaming hours by the number of days in your billing period.
- Estimate egress: Convert bitrate to data per hour, multiply by total hours, and allow for protocol overhead.
- Check regional billing: Confirm the India-region transfer allowance, whether ingress is counted, and the charge for outbound excess.
- Add other costs: Include disk or object storage, snapshots or backups, any transcoding, and applicable taxes or currency effects for your account.

Set up a self-managed VPS stream
The exact commands depend on your operating system, player or encoder, and whether the source needs transcoding. The essential workflow is to prepare an authorized, pre-encoded archive; create a YouTube live event; run a persistent player/encoder on the server; and monitor it. Do not assume a VPS plan includes a ready-made YouTube streaming setup.
- Confirm channel eligibility: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. Check current eligibility and setup guidance at YouTube’s live streaming setup page.
- Check rights before uploading or looping: YouTube’s live-stream terms require the necessary worldwide rights for content, explicitly including music rights. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and YouTube’s copyright help. A third-party match can replace the stream with a placeholder and interrupt or terminate it.
- Prepare the archive: Keep source files and a backup. Verify that each file plays correctly and that the playlist order and transitions work. If you need a new output resolution or codec, determine whether to pre-encode files before upload or transcode on the VPS.
- Create the YouTube stream: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and retrieve its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public scripts, repositories, logs, or shared screenshots. Configure the software to publish to YouTube using RTMPS where supported.
- Configure encoding: Use CBR, the bitrate appropriate to your resolution and frame rate, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). The cited YouTube recommendations include 5 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for H.264 480p30; check the current guidance for other formats and settings.
- Run the player or encoder persistently: Start the process in a service manager or other restart-capable setup rather than relying on an interactive shell. Configure restart behavior and logs, and make sure the server can maintain sustained network throughput at the outgoing bitrate.
- Verify the live output: Confirm that YouTube Studio reports a healthy incoming stream, check playback and audio, then monitor logs and reconnect behavior. A successful initial connection does not establish continuous reliability.
- Plan recovery and maintenance: Alert on a stopped process or missing input, rotate the stream key if it is exposed, install security updates, and test recovery after a restart before relying on unattended operation.
Protect long broadcasts and the archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. See YouTube’s live archive guidance. Break a continuous schedule into sessions shorter than 12 hours where practical, and retain a separate local copy rather than treating YouTube’s archive as your only copy.

For local retention, size an external SSD for livestream backups from the bitrate and hours you want to keep. At 5 Mbps, one hour of video is approximately 2.25 GB in decimal units, before overhead; your actual files may differ. Keep the backup separate from the server so that a server or account problem does not remove both working and backup copies.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The stream disconnects or stalls | Insufficient sustained network capacity, process failure, or a server restart. | Check server and encoder logs, sustained throughput, and restart alerts. Confirm the outgoing bitrate is within the instance’s actual network capability. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect or exposed stream key, endpoint configuration, or unsupported protocol settings. | Recheck the stream key and RTMPS configuration in YouTube Studio and the encoder. If the key was exposed, replace it. |
| Video buffers despite a healthy process | Network throughput is variable or the selected bitrate is too high for the instance or route. | Check sustained outbound capacity and adjust resolution or bitrate based on YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| CPU stays high or output quality is unstable | The server may be transcoding, or its CPU capacity may be insufficient for the encoding workload. | Use pre-encoded files if suitable, or choose compute sized for the required transcoding. Replay/relay and transcoding have different compute profiles. |
| Unexpected cloud bill | Outbound transfer exceeded the allowance, Mumbai allowance was assumed to equal the headline amount, or storage/runtime was underestimated. | Recalculate egress from bitrate and hours, verify the regional allowance and overage rate, and review storage and managed-service runtime charges. |
| Live video is interrupted or replaced | A third-party copyright match or a rights issue. | Confirm worldwide rights, including music rights, and review YouTube’s copyright notices and live-stream status. |
| No YouTube replay is available | The session ran longer than 12 hours, or archive capture otherwise did not complete. | Keep a separate local archive and split long programming into sessions shorter than 12 hours where practical. |
