A website screenshot API with webhook support lets your application submit a capture, continue working while a hosted browser renders the page, then receive an HTTP callback when processing finishes. The callback contract is provider-specific: check how to retrieve the result, verify the sender, handle retries, and recover if a notification is missed before you build around it.

How asynchronous screenshot callbacks work

A screenshot API renders a URL—and, with some services, supplied HTML—in a hosted browser, then returns an image or another supported output. With an asynchronous request, the initial response acknowledges the work, often with a job or render ID; it does not mean the screenshot is ready. After rendering, the provider sends an HTTP POST to the callback URL or makes the result available through a retrieval endpoint. The exact acknowledgement, event payload, and result storage depend on the service. Website Screenshot API documentation describes its API, while ScreenshotOne’s async and webhook documentation describes its own contract.

  1. Submit: Send the capture request with the provider’s asynchronous option and callback URL, if required.
  2. Acknowledge: Record the returned job ID and status. Treat this as acceptance, not completion.
  3. Render: The service loads and captures the page, then stores or otherwise exposes the result.
  4. Notify: The service POSTs a completion event to your application, or you poll using the job ID if the provider supports it.
  5. Process: Validate the notification, record it idempotently, and retrieve or process the screenshot according to the documented result format.

Confirm whether callbacks report failures as well as successes, whether a result is embedded or linked, and how long a linked file remains available. These are provider-specific details, not a common webhook standard.

What to check before choosing an API

A “webhook supported” label is not enough to design a dependable integration. Compare the contract and operational behavior for the exact account, plan, and deployment you will use.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Decision area Questions to verify
Availability Are async jobs and callback delivery enabled for your deployment and plan? If callbacks are unavailable, does the request fail before acceptance or return an error after the job is accepted?
Immediate response What status and job identifier does the request return? Which statuses mean queued, running, complete, or failed?
Completion payload What event fields identify the job and outcome? Is the image inline, at a storage URL, or retrieved through another API call?
Delivery behavior What are the callback timeout and retry schedule? Is there a stable delivery or event ID? Are events ordered? Do failures also trigger callbacks?
Authentication What exact request bytes or fields are signed, what secret is used, and does the signature include a timestamp? Follow that provider’s scheme rather than borrowing another API’s verification code.
Recovery Can you poll for job status or retrieve a result after a missed callback? What are result retention, rate limits, concurrency limits, quotas, and error codes?
Cost Compare successful capture allowances, formats, storage or egress charges, and any separate costs for PDFs, retries, or other outputs. Recheck current plan terms before committing.

For example, the Screenshot API guide currently says async callbacks return 503 without charging a credit on that deployment. That is a deployment-specific notice, not evidence that callbacks are unavailable across screenshot APIs.

Webhook security and reliable processing

Verify the provider’s signature

Do not trust a callback merely because it reached a secret-looking URL or came from an expected network address. Verify the signature using the exact signed input, secret, and algorithm specified by the selected provider. If the scheme includes a timestamp, validate its freshness as documented to reduce replay risk. For example, ScreenshotOne documents an HMAC-SHA256 digest of the JSON body signed with the API key, while ScreenshotNeo documents a timestamped HMAC over timestamp + "." + body using a signing secret. Those formats are different; neither should be assumed for another provider. See ScreenshotOne’s documentation and ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation.

Make the handler idempotent

Callbacks may be retried, so design your receiver to safely process a repeated event. Where the provider supplies a stable delivery or event ID, store it with the processing result and use it to detect duplicates. If no such ID is documented, choose a deduplication key from documented job and event fields, and make the downstream operation safe to repeat. Return the provider’s expected success response only after you have durably recorded enough information to resume processing.

Keep callback handling short

Validate the request, persist the event, and acknowledge it promptly. If image retrieval or other work takes longer, put that work on your own queue. This avoids tying the provider’s delivery attempt to a slow downstream operation. Confirm the provider’s timeout and retry behavior rather than assuming a common value.

Plan for missed notifications

Use polling or a status/retrieval endpoint as a recovery path when the provider offers one. Persist the job ID from the initial response so a scheduled reconciliation task can find work that has not reached a terminal state. Also decide how your application handles a callback that arrives before local job state is committed, or a result URL that expires before retrieval.

DIY integration checklist

  1. Choose a provider and confirm async callbacks are available for your deployment and account.
  2. Implement the asynchronous capture request and persist its job ID before returning from your own user-facing request.
  3. Expose an HTTPS callback endpoint that can receive the provider’s POST request.
  4. Validate the signature against the provider’s specified input; enforce timestamp freshness when its scheme uses timestamps.
  5. Persist events and deduplicate retries before acknowledging successful delivery.
  6. Retrieve the screenshot using the documented inline payload, storage URL, or result endpoint.
  7. Monitor pending jobs and callback errors; reconcile unresolved jobs through polling when supported.

Troubleshooting common integration failures

  • The request returns 503 for async callbacks: The deployment may not support callbacks. Check its current documentation and account availability; the screenshotapis.org guide, for example, reports this status for its deployment and says it does not charge a credit.
  • The callback is rejected as unauthenticated: Confirm you are using the correct secret and exactly the signed bytes or fields. Avoid parsing and re-serializing JSON before verifying a signature that covers the raw body.
  • The same completion is processed more than once: Treat delivery as potentially repeated. Deduplicate using the documented delivery ID or a safe job/event key and make work idempotent.
  • The callback arrives but the image is missing: Check whether the payload contains the image or only a job/result reference, whether another retrieval call is required, and whether the result link has expired.
  • A job stays pending after no callback arrives: Check callback endpoint reachability and logs, then poll the job if the API provides that option. Reconcile persisted job IDs rather than submitting duplicate captures blindly.
  • The provider keeps retrying: Ensure the endpoint responds within the documented timeout and returns the expected success status only after durably recording the event. Check signature and payload errors in server logs.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

Async capture is useful when page rendering may outlast a synchronous request or when your application needs to process many jobs without holding a client connection open. It does not by itself establish a faster render, guaranteed delivery, or exactly-once processing. The reviewed provider documentation does not establish a cross-vendor standard for callback order, retry guarantees, retention, or concurrency. Size your own queue and reconciliation process around the chosen provider’s published limits, and measure your workload rather than assuming a latency or throughput figure.

For cost comparisons, use the current plan page and include the outputs and infrastructure around the API: successful captures, PDF or other format pricing, result storage duration, data transfer, retries, and any work your own callback service performs. Avoid comparing headline quotas alone when one plan or deployment treats failed, cached, or unsuccessful captures differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all website screenshot APIs support completion webhooks?

No. Callback support depends on the specific provider, deployment, and account configuration; verify the current contract before implementation.

Can I use the same webhook signature code for different screenshot APIs?

No. Signing inputs, secrets, timestamp handling, and algorithms vary by provider. Implement the selected provider’s documented scheme.
