Use Selenium’s Python WebDriver to open a page, wait for the content you need, and save the current browser view with driver.save_screenshot("page.png"). The basic capture is straightforward; the important detail is that a successful screenshot call does not guarantee a JavaScript-heavy page has finished rendering.
How do I save a screenshot with Python Selenium?
Install Selenium in your Python environment, then run this minimal script. Selenium Manager can obtain a browser driver when one is not found locally, though setup varies by platform.

driver.quit()The sequence is: start a browser session, navigate to a URL, wait if the relevant content is rendered asynchronously, save the screenshot, and close the session. save_screenshot() returns a success value and writes the image to the path you specify. The WebDriver screenshot response is image data encoded in Base64; Selenium’s Python binding handles writing it to the file. See the Selenium WebDriver screenshot documentation.

When should the script wait before capturing?
A navigation command completing is not always the same as the application finishing its work. Selenium’s default page-load strategy, normal, waits for resources and the load event. The eager strategy waits until the DOM is accessible and DOMContentLoaded fires, while other resources may still be loading. The none strategy does not block WebDriver on page readiness. Choose based on the page and add a condition for the content that actually matters.
Selenium cautions that document.readyState == "complete" does not necessarily mean a single-page application has finished fetching or rendering dynamic content. An explicit wait for a page-specific element is usually more dependable than an arbitrary fixed sleep.

What does the screenshot include?
The ordinary WebDriver screenshot captures the current browsing context. If you need a specific element or a different output, use the matching method rather than assuming the basic call changes its scope.

Full-page support is particularly version-sensitive: Selenium’s Java API marks its full-page screenshot interface beta and lists FirefoxDriver as an implementation. That does not establish identical support for Python or other browser-driver combinations. Verify the method on the versions you actually run; consult the Java WebDriver API for its stated scope.
How do I capture only an element?
Wait for and locate the target element, then save its screenshot. The element method captures that element rather than the whole browser context.

First confirm that your installed Selenium Python API exposes save_full_page_screenshot() and that the browser and driver combination supports it. The Python API index lists the method, but browser-specific behavior is not uniform enough to promise it will work everywhere.

If your target combination lacks the method, use a supported capture approach for that browser or capture the content in another form; do not treat a viewport screenshot as a full-page result.
How do I choose between a screenshot and a PDF?
Use save_screenshot() or an element screenshot when you need an image for visual inspection, documentation, or an image-based workflow. Use print_page() when you need a printable PDF representation. Selenium’s print-page feature currently requires Chromium in headless mode; it does not return a raster image. See Selenium’s print-page documentation.
What should I check for Chrome setup?
Selenium’s Chrome documentation says Selenium 4 is compatible with Chrome 75 and later by default, and that Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions must match. Selenium Manager can automatically download a browser version if one is not found locally. These are documentation statements, not a guarantee that every machine’s browser installation or enterprise setup behaves the same way. Check the current Chrome setup guidance if startup fails.
Troubleshooting Selenium screenshots
- The browser will not start: Check that Selenium is installed, the browser is available, and the browser/driver setup is compatible. For Chrome, align the Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions; review the current Chrome guidance.
- The image is blank or misses dynamic content: The page may have completed navigation before its application content was rendered. Wait for a meaningful element or state instead of relying only on navigation completion or
readyState. - The full-page method is missing or fails: Support depends on binding, browser, and driver. Confirm that the installed Python API exposes the method and check its implementation for your browser; do not infer Python support from Selenium’s Java API.
- The output is PDF when an image was needed:
print_page()creates a PDF print representation. Use a screenshot method for raster image output. - The script exits while leaving the browser running: Put
driver.quit()in afinallyblock so the session is closed even if navigation or capture raises an error.
